People don't want to use 75w-90 GL-5 GEAR oil like Mobil 1, it's too slick for the synchros to grab. You want a GL-4 MTF manual trans fluid, like Redline's MTL line, or imo Synchromesh....which is thinner too, and ideal for winter.

@jcreeker55812 жыл бұрын
Thx for the video. Your thoughts on manual transmission oil rated for GL-4, GL4/5, and GL5? From what info is out there, gear oil rated GL4/5 and GL5 has more sulfur in that can damage the syncros of a manual transmission. That is what what GL-3 or GL-4 oil is recommended.

See my previous comment. Local Toyota dealer-provided schematics pictured a different MT and online sources said transmission was an RA61F but its online schematic was not mine. So this is the only vid or source I found for locating drain and fill on 6-speed MT for an 08 FJ Cruiser with full-time 4 wheel drive. Thanks.

We own an 07 Tacoma 4Cylinder Manual Transmission with over 250K miles on her, and we have owned since about 30K miles and we have never drained the transmission fluid, nor rear differential fluid, nor engine coolant either. Would you suggest doing these services at this point or just leaving it be, since such high miles and replacing these fluids especially on manual tranny might do more harm than good?…

Secondly; do xfer case and transmission fluid need to happen at the same time? I'm probably due for both but trying to troubleshoot a transmission sound and can't get redline products locally very easily, might be stuck w/ 2qts for a while and don't want to mix/match fluids too much. Absolutely "Do not" put in any that is GL-5 rated or rated for both 5 and 4....Use GL-4 ONLY!!! You will eventually ruin your transmission with GL-5.... 5 has a lot more additives that eat up the soft metal synchros in the manual transmission and eventually ruin it.
