This work requires from the pianist delicacy, poetry and precision. Modesty too, because the piano is not often in the foreground as it can be in the great romantic concertos. Few pianists possess all these qualities to the same degree as Yuja!

Fantastic composition. A bit of Debussy, a bit of Ravel and lots of spanish flair. Yuja seems to have a spanish soul!

I have always been blown away by her vast repertoire. This has nothing to do with the fact that every performance is world class. That she can play from memory such a vast amount of the literature is phenomenal. (I also think most of her performances are "best of class"). I have had the fortune of seeing her in live performances on several occasions and can attest she is the real deal. An unbelievable artist. In spite of our being blessed by many great young pianists, I think she is in a class be herself. (BTW, I am a musician but not a pianist, so take my evaluation with a "small" grain of salt).

I played this piece a week ago, and was shocked that she is playing on a piano with an action so light that she can do the glissandos with the back of the hand! Any piano I’ve played on would leave me bloody if I tried that. They’re also written to be FFF, so why would you brush your hands over the keys if you’re expecting a huge sound? Sorry to talk shop.. She’s spoiled with such an instrument! Wow! I have played many pianos in my life, but never one that light. Alicia de Larrocha played them with her fingers to get a bigger sound, rather than as glissandos. That’s what experience does for you. She had probably played it on every conceivable piano out there, and decided it was the safest. 😊

You are probably thinking of the glissandi that occur at 8'56'' and following... I don't have your experience as a professional pianist, but I don't think the piano Yuja plays here is special. In a completely different piece, and on a completely different piano, she does the same glissando with the back of her hand: in Stravinsky's "Petrouchka" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3WnaGp-r82FeJY) (00' 12'' in the first piece, and 9'34'' in the third). However, having shaken her hand, I know that she does not have a rhinoceros skin! I don't know the explanation of the mystery! With kind regards.

@@eusebiusetflorestan2532 that’s funny! Thanks for explaining it. I just couldn’t do it with my skin. I was always taught to play glissandos with your nails, to avoid skin contact. I once broke the skin playing the octave glissandos in Brahms Paganini Variations and there was blood on the keys. It was in a concert, too! I wasn’t being critical of her, it was more of a mystery to me. As I said, Alicia played them with her fingers rather than as glissandos. That’s the smart thing to do because they’re all black keys. Yuja fingered this piece for Henle editions and it’s the one I use. I use most of her fingerings; but she makes no mention of the glissandos.

As an educator, I am very observant and have nothing against the way of dressing for concert pianists. Just noticed that Yuja's gowns are always backless but then again, who's complaining? Her performance is outstanding and by the time she's 40 she would be playing more remarkable pieces. If she gets married too, that would be the best highlight of her life ( if it makes her happy too )

She has already played MANY more remarkable pieces. Look her up (as an educator, you should already know)! And Listen, don't just look!

Let's just be happy some of these great works are done suberbly still in live performance, and we are not just left to listen to them by the great dead...
