I used to own a Bear stock for my biathlon rifle, exactly as pictured in this video. Beautiful, perfect shape and light weight. I did not know these were entirely built by hand, I'm happy to learn that they are.

@bobgarr62464 жыл бұрын
@@jeannankeefe845 as a gunsmith, I understand the need for PPE to be worn when working day in and day out with the various hazardous materials and substances that we encounter. And stockmaking is no exception. Some woods, not to mention glues stains, oils, and other finishes can cause serious and sometimes fatal respiratory illnesses among other unpleasant conditions. Ebony, ivory and many types of horn, when being ground to shape produce a dust that contains spores that if inhaled can be deadly. So this is not about any sort of political correctness, an implication that does not describe me and which I resent. Doing this type of work I know first hand the toll it can take on the body from not useing protection. Lung/respiratory, liver and kidney damage are the biggest threats. And physically, eye and hand injury are very common. He may live to 104, but you have no idea the injuries he has sustained or the effects on his body. You, should come down off " your " high horse and listen to those that do for a living and have decades of experience to back it. It is a good thing that we have gone from the days when I first started decades ago, when carbon tetrachloride, mercury and asbestos were commonly used, to the realization that safety and PPE are nessecerry in a working shop environment. And if you are employing others to work with you it is not only incumbent upon you to have in place safety and protection for them, but mandated by OSHA to do so. And in stockmaking, as in any environment that produces dust, air filtration of some type is imperative. Airborne dust particulate matter is highly explosive, and once a certain level is reached all it takes is a light being turned on, or a drill started, any spark or ignition source will ignite it and cause a violent explosion. This guy is an amazing stockmaker. But it's best to point out dangerous practices that will be copied by a percentage of fools that will attempt to copy what they see on a KZbin video.

It doesn't matter, it's not the tools that define the craftsman, but rather his diligence, attention to detail, patience, skill, knowledge and thought process and most of all..... experience. A fantastic and exceptionally accurate rifle will not make you a good shot, but knowing and understanding the fundamentals of propper shooting technique, breathing, trigger control, ranging targets and sight alignment will make even a mediocre rifle shoot well. In other words..... it's not the equipment that makes you good at what you do, it's your level of skill that makes the best use of what equipment you have.

@@Brian420687 I've seen then have problems related to not being laminated, and in 50 years of woodwork, I have never seen a laminated structure, that was properly made come apart as though there was a magic delamination fairy. In the 60s when I was a kid, laminated wood was a very popular material for architectural projects, and a lot of that stuff is still just as it was first installed. Or take a '59 laminated wood Bear Kodiak, a high demand recurve bow. As good as the day it was made.
@ldwithrow086 жыл бұрын
Biathlon is shot in very damp and miserable weather. I've seen solid stocks go really screwy with warping and swelling. No matter how well the finish is applied, moisture WILL get into the wood. Sometimes old school doesn't work as well. And the .22 rimfire ammo doesn't put a lot of impact on a stock. In most cases either laminate or composite will perform better. I hunt rather than shoot biathlon and most of my field rifles have two stocks. One out of the box engineered material for out in the weather and a custom wood stock for the range and display.
