I went down the same path (trying to find drawings) in the end I watched a bunch of KZbin vids and looked at pictures of Don Allen duplicators before I built mine, similar to what is pictured here. The machine is a lot more capable than I am however on the bright side for every mistake I make on it I also learn how to avoid it for the next stock.

big respect for the work , nice that the old way is kept alive Onley thing is why that much effort in a 22LR like id understand it for a 1903 or a Hunting 98 Mauser / Remington 700 - big firms nowadays use a 5 axis CNC and are inclusive milled checker done with it within 40 minutes its basically done except oiling or laquer coating the wood - you dont even need to sand it anymore other than the sanding they do when massaging in the oil - if they dont just dip them a few times and polish them afterwards

Stephen, you have done a wonderful job making that four-axis profile copying router. I am impressed by the quality of the work you produce. But (there's always a "but", isn't there?) are you considering the next step, and driving that excellent machine with four CNC stepper motors? The software to control them is readily available, the parts are quite inexpensive (see Banggood in China for one source), and for a few dollars/pounds you can have your existing templates scanned and digitised, which means that if you need to make an (a) or a (b) or a (z), all you need do is call up the appropriate file from a computer, press "Enter", and stand back while the machine does all the work, extremely accurately, as many times as you want, and doesn't miss any bits.. If you invest a few quid now you can greatly improve your productivity, and hence profitability. Imagine putting a blank in the machine and walking away to finish sand a stock or two while the machine cuts new, finely-finished stocks all by itself. You would have to invest a very little bit of time in changing cutters, because having tool-changing machinery costs a lot more, and so you would need to run a number of separate programs to run (say) three separate passes. This might be roughing with a two-flute, square-ended cutter, followed by one pass with perhaps a quarter-inch ball-ended cutter, followed by another pass with an eighth-inch ball mill, which would would give you highly dimensionally accurate products that need minimal sanding. The software sorts out the tool paths for each pass. You would need four very low power spindle motors, a controller, four ball screw drive rails to make the motion happen, and the software. Given your obvious fabrication skills, making those modifications would be no challenge for you, and the conversion would not disable your machine during its construction; it would be business as usual combined with a *huge* leap in output. The amateur (and professional) CNC society will give you all the help you need. Or have you been told all this already, and have decided it's not for you? Either way, I wish you good fortune; may you live long and prosper.AA

hi i looked at all the cnc options to me . i have even looked at bringing on in from china this year with the atc on it +the rotary table & the big 9 hp spindle motor . having the stocks scand is an expensive job in the uk with all the different inlets that i have . + i do a lot of bespoke stocks whear i use different parts of old stocks to make new patterns up. besides that too long to carve a stock on a cnc machine . it would be ok if they were multi spindle ones , the ones i have looked at are not good enough for the money
