Over 30 years, a retired postal worker and his wife, a retired librarian, have amassed one of the world's great collections of avant-garde art. But rather than cash in, Herb and Dorothy Vogel are donating all 2,000 pieces to the National Gallery of Art. Mike Wallace reports.

This is what integrity and passion look like!! In a world obsessed with money and greed, these stories should be shown to all high school and college students, they may just end up doing what they love instead of chasing the mighty dollar.

The advantage is that they can stroll down the street whenever they want, pop into the museum and see all the art that they were keeping in boxes. Not to ignore the fact that they are two tremendously generous persons that were drawn to that particular museum because admission was free...and everybody could enjoy their art...they are an example to all the world 👏👏👏

Some art is a fraud. Just because someone with a formal qualification or experience with arts says it's grand doesn't make it so. However, that said the Vogel collection is wonderful. Does art make collectors or do collects make something art? As an artist this puzzles me.
@paolobramucci3609
@paolobramucci3609 3 жыл бұрын
We collect out of interest, curiosity and appreciation for whatever it is that we are collecting, be it baseball cards or art. We will think nothing of going without, if it will help us to get a piece to add to our collection, so that we can continue the narrative that we are engaged creating and telling through our collecting and our collection. (Note: I am being specific and limiting, as I am writing about collectors that are similar to the Vogels, people whose collections our personal statements and those of wealthy individuals who see art as a commodity that is to be bought and sold, is for decoration and are buying, because that is what their “art advisor” or interior designer has recommended them to buy. These people seldom, if ever “discover” a new artist or trend. They tend be more concerned with not clashing with the rug, or, bagging a trophy piece to hold bragging rights.) I would say that art does not make a collector, because collecting is something of a character trait and a need that must be fulfilled and art is just on of many things that someone may choose to collect. Though, in our collecting of art, we are elevating it and validating to being a work of, for we are the audience of it and for the artist. I would go even further and say that art collectors, make artists, artists. Without collectors, a person creating works, is a technician, a crafts person, a fabricator and a hobbyist. Not that anything be wrong with being so. With collectors, they move on to being a professional and artist, as they now have someone that is interested in listening to and engaging with their narrative as it is transmitted through and by their work. With the collector, they now have someone with whom to have dialogue with and our now creating works that are an expression of culture of people and of their society.
