I like leather notebooks, I’m with you on long wrap-arounds and “leather lint”. The Manufactus doesn’t do it for me. I enjoyed your review of the Pineider notebook (I watched it right after watching this review) and was strongly tempted to get one (you praised almost everything about it), but your comments about the “plasticky” feel of it leave me ambivalent. It certainly seems a lot cleaner than this, more elegant. And the paper sounds nicer. I had the misfortune recently of buying a lovely leather notebook for about $150 in Colorado Springs, then discovering that, while the leather portion is A5 sized, the notebook inserts are a trimmed version of an A5 Moleskine. I’m afraid I was too taken by the cover to ask for a ruler so I could verify the clerk’s claim that the notebook inside was in fact A5. I’d intended to stick a Mitsubishi Bank Paper notebook in it, and when I came home, I sat down at my desk to do just that. I realized to my horror that the MBP notebook was too wide to let me close the leather cover. The leather is lovely, I love the design on it, and I have to get these merely adequate custom-sized Moleskine notebooks to put in it. That was the first week of June. I have to return to Colorado Springs next week. I don’t think I can return the cover, but I certainly intend to return to the shop and share my feelings about being unable to use a standard A5 notebook in it. Hmm. I don’t suppose your supplier could chop a centimeter or so off the edge of a MBP notebook, could they? I’d happily pay the price for a few notebooks like that!

Hi James, thanks for the comment! The Pineider is a better notebooks. There are "A5 slim" notebooks out there. Dressco makes some but they might be too narrow. Unfortunately, making a Bank Paper notebook in low volume is very expensive as it requires a lot of machine setup as well as new plates and packaging modifications. You might find a local binder or printer with the capability to chop Bank Paper notebook down to the right size.

@@BlakesBroadcast Weird coincidence; I went to my office for my first work day in weeks, saw that leather notebook cover on my desk, and immediately wrote an email to The Paper Mind. Then came home and saw your message here. Well, it was worth an ask. I just sort of envisioned a giant paper cutter and slamming down the blade on a notebook, though deep down I figured it would be more difficult than that. I’ll check out Dressco. I’ll be back in Colorado Springs for Thanksgiving. I’ll go back to that shop and tell them how I feel about putting Moleskine notebooks in their leather covers. They sell some expensive fountain pens in the same shop, so I didn’t think they’d be putting such fountain-pen unfriendly paper in their notebook covers.

Leather certainly adds to the aesthetic but in the this case it hampers the comfort a bit.

@@BlakesBroadcast That's what I love about minimal notebooks like those from Midori and Muji. They easily lay flat because their spines offer no real resistance.
