I don''t have the 845, but I have many other Pilot pens, including VPs, a KOP, and E95s examples. I've never had a problem with any of their nibs, whether 14K, 18K, or 21k. Namiki pens are Pilot-related, and I have some of those, too. I recommend all the brand names above.

Pretty pen. I have a faceted StIpula Etruria in amber celluloid. Stipula's aesthetic is unique, and I do like it.

You’d expect a Stipula-crazy fan like me to definitely comment on this, right? 😋 Excellent review, as usual, Blake, of a drop-dead gorgeous pen. I think I told you before that I think the faceted Etruria is essential to any Stipula fan’s collection. I own three of the faceted Etrurias, one in the Amber celluloid and the other in the lovely Tortoise resin model (F). And yet another in a red/orange ebonite. Alas, all bought at premium prices. I absolutely love everything about the faceted Etruria. Some of the most beautiful, desirable pens ever made anywhere. Except the prices. Very over-the-top MSRP, and even the retailer’s discounts don’t help much when it’s still around $700+…Even for a very beautiful resin like this, the price really is unfair and makes you seriously pause before buying. The faceted celluloids are typically $1k plus MSRP. How do you always manage to snap these resin Stipulas at such incredibly unbeatable prices? For that price, it’s crazy not to buy this pen. Glad that you did. The in-house nibs are genuinely fantastic. A very distinct feel to the way they write. Both the standard 14k and 18k. The 14k/18k Stiflex nibs are even better. The faceted body, the tapered section, the piston system, the very attractive sterling silver trims and especially the silver rings around the cap really appeal to me a lot. I really like the 0.9 stub. Though Stipula’s stub/italic don’t offer the sort of line variation you’d expect. Lovely writers, still. You’re right about the less than ideal capping /thread issue. It’s actually something that seems to be common on other Stipulas, too. Aurora has it perfect, on this count. Stipula remains rather overlooked and under-rated. Some of the past reported QC issues and negative comments by users online - and the prices probably deter many potential buyers. Your honest and positive reviews should help change that and encourage more people to seriously consider buying Stipulas they like. I have a dozen Stipulas - and intend to probably buy one or two more that I still need to have in my collection. Use your Red Currant pen as often as possible. Stipulas are best savored when used. 🙂

I love my Monoc nib.. I have the first iteration which is a M nib which reverse writes as a F.. I love Ian’s work. I keep mine on a Ranga Abhimanyu clear acrylic pen, which allows me to see the nib through the cap. Very fetching. I really like the feedback, almost pencil-like feel. The reverse writing is super smooth too. This purple nib is stunning. I eye droppered mine but it gushed too much so I went back to a converter for this nib. I think the Monoc nib is innovative, unique and sturdy, hard to do in the fountain pen world. Glad to find your channel.

I have the Champagne (gold and blue) version of this pen and I like it quite a bit. I got it at a trunk show, so it ran me about $450 I believe. The one thing that frustrated me was that the nib was very out of alignment when I bought it. Luckily, I was going to have it ground to a Cursive Smooth Italic at the show, and bless Matthew Chen for now charging me to adjust it before he could grind it. I am a sucker for a faceted pen.

It's my favorite Stipula so far. The prices can fluctuate a lot of Amazon. I use the wish list feature on Amazon as well as camelcamelcamel.com for price alerts and price history.

Interesting video, especially since Stipula is rarely, if ever, reviewed by other reviewers. Such a big discount in price does make us poor viewers a bit envious.

I didn't buy them all in one go. I setup price alerts with camelcamelcamel.com and once they went low enough I bought. I am not saying this will happen again with this model but I frequently find good pen deals on Amazon.

That is a beautiful pen Blake, but considering the size and price, it should have came with a #8 nib. Congrats anyway on scoring it for the price you paid 🎉.

Thanks Gino! I don't think Stipula does a #8 size nib but I agree that it would make this pen even better.

I’m told that Schon Design pens are extremely well made. I think the nib is a fascinating design. Is the pen worth over $600? One could ask that of a Montblanc 149. The thing is injection molded plastic, after all, and the gold in the nib is worth less than $100. So why does the thing sell for over $1,000? A gold nib isn’t worth hundreds of dollars for its metal content, nor is a titanium nib worth hundreds of dollars for the metal content. What gives it its value, then? Perhaps the work that goes into making it? Scarcity? The fact that it’s unusual? What people are willing to pay? All of that, I think, but if a nib costs less than I’m willing to pay for it, it’s automatically worth it to me. People are prejudiced toward gold They think the value is intrinsic. They think incorrectly, but that doesn’t matter; value is created in our heads. Perhaps I’d want a monoc nib for the bragging rights, or the novelty, or the fact that it’s U.S. made. I’d rather have it in a copper or bronze pen than an ultem pen, but I don’t work in a lab and I don’t want to eyedropper it, or the ultem might be more attractive to me. I think if Schon sold that nib in a silver pen for $600 (maybe up to $800), I’d be all over it. In Bronze or copper, I can talk myself into it at under $500. Probably at $600, but I’d have to do a lot of talking. I don’t like the looks of ultem, though, so $600 for that one is too high for me. I do want that monoc nib, though. I imagine the high price represents the cost of machining the titanium with the precision required for a fountain pen nib, but also the cost of all the nibs that failed, all the time Schon didn’t get to earn income while he was working on the design - the costs of R&D. And I think the price of the nib more closely represents Schon’s costs than the cost of a MB nib represents MB’s costs. MB’s nib comes with a far larger markup than I think Schon’s does. So from that perspective, I’d say his pen is a lot more worth it than a MB. But I’m guessing here. And I’m guessing that if he were able to go into larger scale production, the price of that nib would come down. The price of that nib isn’t some sort of subsidy for Mr. Schon; it’s probably more representative of the true economic cost of making the nib than MB’s prices are. The only issue is whether people are willing to pay it. If they aren’t, then the monoc nib will disappear, strangled by the invisible hand of the market

Excellent review. Thank you. There seems to be a lot of hype around these Leonardo pens - I am yet to try one. I was happy to see your Montegrappa Extra, I brought mine out the other day - it’s a beautiful pen.
@BlakesBroadcast9 күн бұрын
In terms of build quality and technical knowhow I think Montegrappa surpasses most brands and in terms of artistic techniques they go toe to toe with Montblanc. With Leonardo, they make a good quality pen but they release pens so fast with so many different materials that none of their pens feel special. More restraint would elevate this brand. I don't want to drink from a firehose.

I bought this pen with an EF nib 6 months ago, I use it for writing summaries and notes for my study. It performs well, even better than pens that are far more expensive and have a gold nib. As a leftie, I decided to try an EF as I want to write small texts in schemes and mindmaps I like to draw. I conclude the TWSBI Vac Mini is a very good buy, it offers much value for the money! Carry on Blake, I like your very informative videos and you show a good taste, the gold-green ink is marvellous!

Blake, I have a question about the black version of the Metis. Is it also made from a solid rod, or is it injection moulded? Is the weight factor similar to the models made from colored acrylic rods? For this pen design, the black GT and the amaranto GT are my favorites. Thanks for any information.
@BlakesBroadcast18 күн бұрын
It is made from a solid rod. I am not aware of any injection molded Gioia. The weight is the same as the colored acrylic Metis pens. I love the black with rose gold trim. I think it is the most elegant but I have so many black pens I went for the Amaranto which is also great.

The screw cap & body seem to be all plastic. At that price point point, it should have brass fittings to reinforce it.
@BlakesBroadcast19 күн бұрын
Bass fittings are not particularly expensive and in general I do not think they make a pen better. Aurora for instance prides itself on not adding a metal liner to its caps. It is harder to make a strong thin plastic but it makes for a more comfortable pen. Look at Pelikan and Montblanc as well. They do not line their caps with metal.
