As an animator in the Japanese animation industry, there’s usually no time to learn to draw characters, so we just learn as we draw. So what I did (can’t really speak for others) is picked up observational drawing and learnt anatomy such from bridgeman books. Once you have anatomy down and your hands and eyes are coordinated, you’ll be able to tell why certain details are designed as they are in comparison to the human body in terms of style and proportions. Eventually, you’ll find it easy to combine all the references you have to create heads that aren’t even on the reference sheets. This apples to everything from animals to humans to clothes. Also a little note, shift and trace is still largely used in the Japanese industry. I’ve received corrections from sou sakkan artists with shifted head corrections, it makes subtle character acting a thousand times easier, especially with detailed drawings

I’ve noticed this during my watch through of Dragon Ball and now I feel extra bad for the animators that had to constantly change the way they draw the series once the manga’s artstyle started shifting. Plus there was a longtime One Piece animator who came back for Super that took quite an amount of episodes to learn how to draw Dragon Ball again. I love the animation coming out of Japan but damn being part of the industry must be super hard.

At this point, I can say that being praised for good cuts from directors and studios is one of the biggest adrenaline boosts and is most likely what's keeping me around. No…. This is wrong. Hi, I’m a foundations drawing teacher. All you need to do is understand the foundations, then practice the lessons within those disciplines. It’s like a musician practicing their scales….. once you can learn them and understand how they are applied, you will be drawing and animating pretty quickly.

Also, I'd like to add that not every production has a lot of production materials, and good indications on their character models.... I mostly work on japanese anime and there's usually not that much infos on the sheets :') The less infos you have, the harder it is to make something cool, so it's ok if your drawings are not perfect !! 5:05 I cannot agree more with this ;_; Often when I try to be super on model, I end up having stiff drawings... But at the same time, I can't just have rough drawings, or else it'll take too much time to clean !!! Because the japanise animation style allows it, I draw my key frames very roughly, then I'll clean those (like for a head turn 2 or 3 drawings are enough) and when I'm satisfied, I'll do my breakdowns more roughly, but since my key frames are superclean, I can be more efficient. It takes time, but eventually you'll be able to draw any characters from any model sheet, without practicing it first ! It's possible throught hard work !! Good luck everyone 😎💪

I've noticed this! Settei is very succint in their poses and expressions. You kinda need to be able to draw on the production's style very accurately to be a Sakkan. I mostly get my layouts corrected to hell to fix the likeness haha, but I understand its part of the process! Hope to keep learning so I can be more accurate as well! Also Nigen is really fun to me!

I was not expecting that Powerpuff Girls Z mention at the beginning of the video! I'm a massive PPGZ fan, so I was happy you mentioned it! As a small correction, Powerpuff Girls Z aired in *2006*, NOT *2008*. Only the English dub aired in 2008. I don't mean to be THAT guy, but I tend to get very annoyed when people get PPGZ's air date wrong (especially with Saberspark's review of the anime).

A job well done. Starting rough, not focusing on details and using different tricks to maintain the consistency and proportion are simple concepts that beginners struggle to understand. I myself still struggle and avoide transfer techniques, thinking of them as bad habits, but this video is a good reminder to not be too harsh on myself.

You can copy a style, but the result is not the same for different artists. ordinary people often don’t notice this, but if the series was drawn by different artists, this is always noticeable. I also try to draw in different styles, but my style is still visible whether I want it or not🤗

I am a guy who adores drawing and animating and I've been looking to draw in another person's art style for the sake of learning. I tell you, the place and trace thing is genius. I never thought of that before and I am studying like crazy to get better. While I do have my own art style. I constantly want to learn and I always wondered how people mimic another person's art style. Well now I know. :) Anyway. Maan it's great to see this type of behind the scenes explanation about the animation industry, topics like this are rarely made and it's really daunting for beginners who want to enter the animation industry. Story time: I remember years ago, I used to be a animation intern at a animation studio near our alumni university. A lot of us interns had to "wing" it, basically just do what we think was a 'okay' method or learn it on the fly cause we didn't know how to exactly adapt to the art style that is in done in production. And mind you we got paired with employees who doesn't like being pestered with questions so they will answer with "just draw" etc. or something along those lines, understandable cause everyone's in a lot of stress cause of the deadlines. Out of the 30 students that got in, only 3 to 5 students were able to get to be in the animation department, most of us were transfered to the CU (Clean Up), DIP (Digital Ink & Paint), Layout, and lastly BG (Background) department including me. I went thru all departments before finally settling in the BG dept. This was like back in 2013 or 2014 so there isn't much tutorials like this, thank you for providing insight and full information about the animation industry, we appreciate the time and effort you made to upload this.

About having the individual animators becoming invisible, and making the studio appear as a single artist, Yoh Yoshinari's fellow director at Trigger, Hiroyuki Imaishi has on multiple occations stated that he encourages each animator to express things in their own style, and to really show off what each of them can do, and there certainly isn't a shortage of examples of unique looks and movements in the shows and episodes Imaishi directs. If you look closely at Little Witch Accademia, and Brand New Animal, (which Yoshinari is credited with direction for) then you can see hints of the same thing going on, although not quite as much as under Imaishi.

Absolutely amazing video. I remember my dad uses to dislike seeing me watching shows on CN like Coward the Cowardly Dog because he believes the drawings are hideous. But I know it was way better than what they put out on Disney Channel at the time, not with just the story, but also the animation. It was way more expressive and fun to watch

So i have been a art student for more than 10 years i can literally teach art in school to students till high school if i want but since i did engineering further in my studies i had to leave art all together now after making my name in the engineering field i came back to art although it took me some time it was like a muscle memory to me...then i wanted to try animation..its all on your art feel...if u can make a art pop out of paper sure u can pop a animation out a screen..it depends how much perspective u cam draw n how fast u can draw...learning animation has given me life back...after doing everything what society want me to do i was lost..now i have new things to learn everyday..

My teacher said that everything is made up of shapes. So that's another way of helping one draw. You gotta simplify the shapes. However i LOVE the thing you talked about on expression and then go on model. Perfect visuals to get the point across! I'm subscribing immediatly!
