I LOVE taking time to practice!!! I can feel my riding change when it has been too long since my last dedicated practice time. 15-30 minutes per week or two is a minimum! Some "slow race", slow "cone" weave, offset "cone" weave, figure-8's, and u-turns--all using standard parking space lines--is easy enough to incorporate into a mini-practice session after work to stay sharp enough to keep the jitters away.

I’ve learned so much in the past year and a half just practising your videos. I am by no means of professional yet but I’m way more confident than I’ve ever been.

I would like to see someone do a slow maneuvers on a chopper. I think it's difficult for them that's why no one has done it.
@@haroldyazzie3538 Nope, it's not difficult the bike can be made to do slow speed maneuvers within its limitations. The reason nobody does it is because of two reasons mainly. The wheelbase of a chopper is always much longer than the wheelbase of the average stock bike. That fact gives them a terrible turn radius so that a chopper cannot do the exercises as measured in Robert's or Jerry Palladino's, or any other trainer's course. Also, choppers usually don't have much of a lean angle because they sit low usually, which also hinders their ability to make really tight turns. But, the same concepts for manipulating the friction zone on a chopper apply. Throttle (preloaded) light brake application and clutch. In short, you can't run a chopper in the courses Robert runs,, they just are incapable of making the turns.

When I was out in the Black Hills this past summer, I never saw one other rider than myself who could do a uturn let alone an 18 foot uturn. I had other riders compliment me on my riding skills. One guy was blown away when I pulled a uturn between gas pumps. I told him that was just part of my every day riding. Ever day on my way to work I stp at a gas station and get a breakfast sandwich and where I park the bike I have to do a full lock uturn from a stop to leave the gas station. I can say with complete confidence that I am an above average rider. Growing up I learned to ride on a dirt bike and we would ride through the trees on forestry land and ride on the ice and snow during the winter. I encourage everyone looking to get a bike for the first time to get a dirt bike and learn in the dirt. It is the best way to learn how to respond when the bike moves in a way you are not expecting or how to stay in it when you do something intentionally that changes your natural reaction.

Good video Rob, It covered a multitude of stuff. I hope it motivates riders to get out of the "average" rider or "below average" rider way of thinking. Getting these skills and practicing them to further hone and stay sharp, makes riding much more of a great experience. But folks, if you don't acquire them and practice them, you'll never know and you'll miss out on the opportunity to enhance your riding experience.

When he said you won’t fall because of the friction zone I can attest to that. The bottom of my boot caught pavement and got pulled off the floor board when riding a heritage. He also said speed is not the answer. My body pulled the throttle because my leg jerked back. Because I’ve watched and practiced what he teaches I instinctively roles back up the throttle feathered the clutch straightened out the bike and put my foot back. I had control of it. So thank you for these videos and thank you for your teachings
Not going to lie, thrilled to see your little mishap, but it also confirmed to me that even experienced riders can have mishaps. It’s comforting in one way, and alarming in another way. I dropped my bike once (very few hours on it) but the engine guards and floor boards kept it from hitting the street. It wasn’t a hard drop but I was pretty surprised to see no damage at all. I have hard saddlebags, didn’t know they sell guards for them so I am going to pick some up. By the grace of God I passed the MSF course, but it humbled me. I need a ton of practice and I watch a ton of videos. This is one of my go to channels. Preload!

It might not be the longest video, or the shortest that you’ve ever made, but if there was such a thing as a “Meat and Potatoes” motorcycle video, this would the thumbnail for it! Before The Mrs and I took our private lesson with you, I used to think I “practiced” and that I was “above average”. Man was I wrong…. It wasn’t that I couldn’t ride…. I had just picked up bad habits, over the 4 decades of “knowing how to ride” a motorcycle. And actually riding, PROPERLY. But I’ll keep working on it. Without a doubt…. I “know how” to ride a motorcycle, but I consider myself an Upper “Average” rider…. Knocking on the door of the 2%’er group. Thanks Again Robert, for all that you do.

Late to the party, but here's my two cents. Robert Simmons has mastered the art of riding because he has dedicated his life to learning, practicing, and teaching how to ride as well as anyone possibly can. But there are people out there who are as good and better for one reason. They do what he's been telling us to do for several years now, practice. So as much as I admire and having met him, like him, the fact is anyone can be this good if they put the time and effort into being the boss of their motorcycle. And once you obtain a level of proficiency approaching his, the satisfaction is indescribable. Jerry Palladino, another master uses the quote, "if you think riding a motorcycle is fun, imagine how much more fun it is when you know what you're doing." I owe all my enjoyment when riding to these guys and a few more because I apply what they've taught me. If they did it and I could do it, then you know the rest.

A thought for your community regarding the bike being too precious. Because of the road laws in australia (LAMS/learner motorcycle scheme is a list of most bikes up to 660cc under a certain power) I learned to ride on a tiny cruiser (xv250) for just over a year, I spent the next 10 years riding a yammy cruiser (xv950), no bags so if it falls she goes all the way over (3 times, but one was in a garden 🤭). She was my baby and I'm going to miss it despite upgrading. I for one totally understand wanting to protect the bike, I didn't practice 'extreme' things but definitely things I might encounter 'in the wild' - u-turns on a single lane road, small roundabouts, very small roundabouts, 'traffic calming devices' like chicanes and other slow points in residential areas, emergency braking, stops, etc. If you like your beautiful, precious motorcycle why would you not want to learn to ride it properly to keep it safe, and to really enjoy it? One thing you can do is some kind of course that provide bikes, another is hire a small bike like a crappy little 250 and go practice on that. The skills are the same, the muscle memory is the same, the fear of dropping it is not the same because it's someone elses crappy little bike that can be dropped. The better you are, and the more you practice (because you will work out how far you're willing to push a big beautiful bike and practice some things), the better your bike is protected. Do you want to be the cool rider who pulls up to a stop sign, stops for a whole second without putting feet down, and then goes (assuming it's clear to go...)? Or do you want to duckwalk to stop signs and red lights like a rookie forever? Would you rather a couple of tiny scratches on the bike from when you were practicing, or writing it off on a public road? And honestly, testing your skills and practicing and improving anything is such a good feeling, but it's that with motorbikes so it's better! AND when you practice the hard thing and it becomes easy for you, you can show off a little bit and tell people how easy and fun it actually is, and teach them. And you'll be a safer, more competent, more confident rider (which is good for everyone, but especially you). Bikes are replaceable. People are not. Much love to y'all from australia 👋 (I 'upgraded' to a used 850cc adventure bike, with crash bars and handguards already, to lose that gear fear and learn some new skills to be a better rider. Because being a skilled rider is loads of fun. And that's why we ride, because it's fucking good fun.)
....... "If U have tyme to ride it ..... U have tyme to PRACTICE." ......... good moto. It helps all levels, including average riders that you're fully capable of communicating with us, with no ego, encouraging, no put-downs, but at the same tyme helping riders face the need to improve their skills. ..... Extemporanius speak builds interest & anticipation of what's coming next. Keep up the good work. Thanx. From an 'average, aging, 70plus y.o. re-entry rider, enjoying the wind in my face, but wearing my helmet in the Baystate. (( It's your guess as to where that is. Clue- approx 1350 miles & 21 hours away)) ...😮...

So practice that (without the bike). Watch some vids of picking up big bikes, saw a good one from an older south african guy the other day. He had an adventure bike but the technique is the same whatever bike. Practice some good lifting techniques (lifting with legs not back, etc. good manual handling stuff) with some weights, 10-15kg/20-30lb would do the job, stand from a crouch and lift the weight at the same time to get everything (grip, legs, arms, breathing). Then if/when next time happens you're mentally and physically prepared, or at least more so than if you did nothing but worry. You got this.

Any chance they’re black chrome? Also, do you know if the head pipes are out yet? I did not see them on the website . Thanks for the great content!

" god won't stop any crash or cause one. your blowing opportunity if on your ride your not practicing. you don't even have to go into a parking lot. when you leave your driveway do a figure 8 on your way out, when you come up to a four-way intersection stop your bike without putting your foot down and turn. ect.. high speed maneuvers are important to so on a road that has little or no trafic practice you 60mph to 0mph. maintain the outside lane in a heavey curve. if a cure says 35mph i figure on a bike i should have no trouble hitting it at 50mph or more.

I have no problem believing only 2% knows how,and I would say it’s probably the same for driving a car

smooth clutch, little movements. ride that friction zone and keep the throttle preloaded and steady.

That’s excellent! 18’ isn’t really going to happen on a Challenger or Pursuit. Thank you for watching and hopefully you’re subscribed to my KZbin channel!👍🏾😊 kzbin.info
