I got into Joy Division like a lot of kids in the 80s, by going backwards in New Order's discography and learning about Ian and his suicide years after the fact. Both bands have made a massive impact on my life- their respective catalogs fill my music shelves and provided the soundtrack of my adolescence. Thanks for covering this iconic track and the JD's short frenetic history.

This older guy I was seeing at the time had bought tickets to see Joy Division at a club (The Edge) here in Toronto. The tickets were his birthday present to me that year (I was turning 20) and he wanted to make it a memorable one. We were really looking forward to it because his cousin in the UK had told him that JD was the next big group on the horizon. Sooo, then we got the news about Ian Curtis and obviously there was a change in plans. There were a few people outside the club that night making noise about the situation - some angry, some sad. Obviously, I was sad about it, so we went somewhere else that night. He kept the tickets because I was never the most organised at that time and could've misplaced/lost them. Anyway, that's my Joy Division story.

To me the perfect example of the R&R hof being screwed up is… the BeeGees were inducted ahead of Lynyrd Skynyrd. How do you induct a band whose influence was for disco, a short-lived and IMO sacrilege to compare to rock ahead of the leading force and much copied greatest southern rock band of all time? @@bpabustan I’m sorry what exactly do you mean by got himself together?? as a person who suffers from chronic physical illness having epilepsy had to have been devastating for him…to know that performing not only moving his body in the manners that he did, but also bright lights would more than likely increase his frequency of seizures… Setting aside his bizarre love triangle… yes I did it… for him to have made that decision on the night before leaving for America, where they would’ve broken through ultimately, he must’ve felt like such a burden… Shame embarrassment all of it… He legitimately felt that the band, as well as his child would be better off without him… And the pain… physically emotionally psychologically…was too much… I share those sentiments a lot of the time however, I’m spiteful as hell… And that allows me to continue on… And I cackle as a blaze of fire is behind me because I continue moving forward…So I’m not sure what you meant… please elaborate

One of the things that brought my husband & I together was 80's alternative music. Both born in 1970, it was a pretty major influence on our self identity. He was a big fan of both Joy Division & New Order. I never paid attention enough to know the tragic story, but somehow, I'm not surprised to learn it. My husband's suicide in 2009 probably was inevitable - the 1st attempt I learned of not long after we met was at the tender age of 12. I'm grateful for the nearly 2 decades we shared, as challenging as they sometimes were, & the 4 beautiful humans that came from our union. He very much had a public face he wore to hide his constant inner turmoil & struggle. Thank you for the insight. I always think of him when I hear those bands, but now the connection will be even deeper. 💜

Ian Curtis’s day job was working at an office for people with disabilities. He met a young lady who was desperate to find work, but she’d have major seizures every time she was in the office. Ian already knowing about his own epilepsy was horrified to see her like that. One day she didn’t show up, and he hoped she’d found work… only to later learn she had died during a seizure and no medical help could save her. Again, Ian was horrified by this, because now it’s all too real that it could happen to HIM. This became the inspiration for the song “She’s Lost Control”. I was at a festival years ago (before everyone had smart phones) when this girl next to me just dropped to the ground and started seizing. Her friend thankfully knew what to do and apparently someone working security from the stage saw her drop and radioed for help, but by the time a team of paramedics showed up, the girl and her friend were already gone. I hope they went off to find the medical tent.

As big a music lover as I am, I definitely have some holes in my experience and this was one of them! Im sure I heard this song, but I don't think it ever broke into my consciousness. I have absolutely heard of Joy Division, but I never knew which song was theirs. It's so very heartbreaking to me that he felt the need to end his life just as it was opening up for him😢. Ive lost people to death and even my own son, but watching my sister and brother in law deal with the death of their oldest son to suicide reminds me that it's extra senseless to those who get left behind. Even though the person believes what their doing is a gift to their loved ones, its an even bigger heartbreak then an accidental or natural loss because it could have been prevented. My heart goes out to his band mates and loved ones❤

These lyrics are tearing me apart... again. Wow, what power in these words! When routine bites hard and ambitions are low And resentment rides high but emotions won't grow And we're changing our ways, taking different roads Then love, love will tear us apart again Love, love will tear us apart again Why is the bedroom so cold? You've turned away on your side Is my timing that flawed? Our respect runs so dry Yet there's still this appeal that we've kept through our lives But love, love will tear us apart again Love, love will tear us apart again Do you cry out in your sleep, all my failings exposed? There's a taste in my mouth as desperation takes hold Just that something so good, just can't function no more But love, love will tear us apart again Love, love will tear us apart again Then love, love will tear us apart again Love, love will tear us apart again

This is crazy! As I was listening to your intro, I was thinking that as much as I love your stories behind all these wonderful songs, I wish you would cover something like Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” or the Smiths’ “There is a Light That Never Goes Out.” Two amazing songs that I figured you’d pass over cause they’d be too obscure for much of your American audience. Thank you so much for acknowledging Joy Division’s masterpiece! You have made my day, sir. Perhaps a song by the Smiths will be considered as well at some point.

The thing you dont really go into and needed too was Epilepsy. The condition was getting worse and worse for him and it informed so much of his writing and his personal struggles. He wasn't just depressed he was very ill. He was deathly afraid of having another Grand Mal seizure and never truly recovering and just being left disabled so you throw a man already prone to depression and melancholy and add in a debilitating illness and you get those Joy Division lyrics.

Thank you so much for covering Joy Division and "Love Will Tear Us Apart." While I was alive and very into music (even somewhat obscure Brit bands) in 1980, I did not even hear the song until many years later. Ian's voice, the pounding beat, and the dark lyrics haunt me each and every time I hear it. It may be one of the most haunting songs of all time and, of course, knowing that Ian killed himself not long after recording it, adds another layer of poignancy. So grateful the remaining members were able to regroup as New Order after Ian's anguishing loss.

I heard you say, “naked emotion,” and it’s so interesting that the emotion comes only from the words themselves; but by his tone, he seems to be experiencing nothing, he is dead inside, numb, a void where emotion can no longer exist-almost a herald of the spirit he became. It’s so tragic when you know the story that this is probably exactly where he was in his life.
