It was brought to our attention that one (and possibly other growling sounds) of these voices are incorrect. Jimmy MacDonald (Disney Legend) created the bear growls for Fox and the Hound. Our online resources were incorrect ...cough... IMDB & Disney Wiki... cough...

Candy had a very beautiful and powerful grave voice. I envy him... he was basically the predecessor of Frank Welker in being the go-to-guy for animal roars in cartoons. Also fun fact: the way Big Chief dances his feets like crazy in the song What made the red man red was inspired by Candy's habits of moving his feets while recording.

A character that I remember Candy voicing was unseen outside Baltimore, MD and environs. On screen, Candy was a Chesapeake Bay pelican in a National Beer Commercial that he voiced with Mel Blanc. Candy used his famous basso profundo voice for that one, about "Clammapolis, the Underwater Naval Academy", where his pelican told a bunch of cartoon clams, "OK, you guys, fall in!" When I met Candy at the Great Allentown Fair in Allentown, PA, where he served as the Fair's "Ambassador", he was delighted that I recognized him in the ad; but, he told me that he had never actually seen it.

I also found it strange that Candido was the one singing the "Popeye The Sailor Man" song on that old children's record (45 RPM). He didn't sound anything like Popeye's cartoon voice! Favorite - toss-up between the Awful Din from Phantom Tollbooth and the Captain of the Guard from Robin Hood. Before I learned of his involvement with voice acting, the only tidbit I knew about Candy Candido was after Lou Costello died, Bud Abbott was in such dire financial straits (tax troubles mainly) that he had to go back to acting in burlesque shows, and took Candy under his wing. Whereas Lou had "I'm a baaaaaad boy", Candy had "I'm feelin' mighty low".

@@comet1970 I heard that line ("I'm feeling mighty low") in a Bugs Bunny cartoon (I don't remember the title). It was about B.B.'s fight with a mean construction worker who dug up the rabbit's hole while clearing the way for a new building. Bugs uses all sorts of tricks to get even with the guy, the last one being the dropping of a huge pipe of some kind on the man's head. It's at this point where the groggy worker speaks the "mighty low" line (when I used to watch this cartoon on TV as a child, I never quite understood the meaning of those words; now I know it was meant to be a parody of Candy Candido's routine from Jimmy Durante's radio show; such spoofs were a common practice in these old animated shorts). The construction worker finally gives in, and arranges to have the skyscraper built in such a way, that it doesn't cover Bugsy's rabbit hole. The final shot shows him looking out of the hole while munching on his favorite food, a carrot (of course), and saying to the audience, "After all, a man's home IS his castle."

Also re-used in the Monster Squad for the wolfman & the Legend of Tarzan for Tublat the gorilla (but sound artist Jimmy MacDonald was in fact behind the growls)

Ya know them growl noises sound the same. There is a fine line of pitch between bear, alligator, wolf and lions.

How the actual hell did Candy pull off that deep voice? It sounds like it came right from his gut. At the very least, that voice definitely doesn't sound like it would come out of a white guy.
