Its tidal so as soon as it opens the flow keeps growing minute by minute the the level is dropping downstream of the gate. Less powerful boats want to get in early but bigger boats cost more to keep waiting so its a scrabble. Some of them are returning nutrient rich soil from the delta upstream for rice paddies and some of them are empty having delivered goods to the ports downstream. There is a second gate which can be seen in parts of this video one the right of screen. This is the downstream traffic but there are times when there is no traffic so the upstream traffic can temporarily use it. Big gamble to leave the queue because you might get stopped by the gate authority at any moment. You can see the added confusion going on over there. Its all fascinating. I would love to have a high torque asyimuth drive push boat there to give them all a shove. the hardest part for them is just as their prop gets to the midpoint where the flow underneath is fastest.
