For sure, at low personality greasing the palms of people and giving them 'gifts' is a lot easier to achieve a boost than your not-so-silver tongue (and still cheaper than training).

A good way to improve speech without alienating the entire population of Morrowind might be something like a +20-60 personality spell lasting a couple seconds. Since the game pauses during conversations, the buff would last the whole conversation. Plus you're a wizard! Who needs to *actually* be beautiful when you can use magic to just trick everybody into thinking you are?

+60 to personality for 10 seconds is actually hilariously easy to cast if your even a halfway decent mage. I tend to make that spell very often at the start of the game (10 seconds because its my own personal rule that menu spells need to last at least 10 seconds)

Jon, something to consider is that this game originally shipped with a large printed map of the game area. Many of us played with this map spread out in front of us or hung on the wall, and it’s an immense help when planning your quest journeys. If anything, the in-game map is a supplement to the large printed map, not the other way round. I would really recommend finding a high-res image of the original game map and using it for orienteering, navigation and discovery. It’s absolutely an integral part of the original game experience!

Yes, the paper (or cloth if you were particularly fancy) map only had the downside that new places didn't light up when you were first told about them. In every other way it was more useful and relevant to travel than the in-game map could ever be. In-game was good for local discovery though, especially trying to remember who lived in which house :D
@foremastjohn
@foremastjohn 3 сағат бұрын
@@SuperRedNovaDragonyeah lots of used copies didn’t have the map anymore which was a real shame. Glad you could enjoy the game all the same though! The real benefit of the paper map was showing you the overall layout so you could track the directions you were getting, and the icons on the paper map showed you all sorts of interesting things that made you want to go there and discover what they were all about. But if you played with that sense of discovery even without the paper map cheers and more power to you!

Definitely. The paper map, with all its detail and half-annotated (in three different languages) points of interest, might feel like a bit of a cheat compared to how little information the game itself gives you, but it's truly the intended way to play. It's a bit like the paragraph books in the even older age, when the game couldn't provide all text itself and instead had to reference a separate book in the box that told the actual story of your encounters.

resting does more besides level you up, it's also free magicka restoration (and a source of certain items that you can sell). For completions sake, it has to be clarified if one delays level up so much so non-misc skill levels for more than required 10, next level will be penalized by empty skill ups. Meaning, if one levels to 15/10 before resting, next level will be already at 5/10 but with no attribute multipliers

pro-tip jon, you are on the right track by boosting luck or intelligence for potion making but a 60 second long spell is overkill because time stops while you're in the menu. so you can make a spell that lasts 1 second, and you can make the range 1-100 to make it easier to cast at your low skill and magicka and just recast if the number you get is low.
@EvelynNdenial

also the mentors ring reminds me about something important. there are some quests that have you fetching powerful artifacts, some are required to continue their quest line some are not and it may be better to just hold on to that magic item for yourself. if you're avoiding spoilers you'll just have to feel things out for yourself which ones are which.

I often create a spell that casts Sound or Chameleon 1pt on self for 1 sec duration and then repeatedly cast it to level up Illusion/Personality. Low magicka cost (often 1pt) and fairly high success chance. Similar spells for the other schools of magic as well. Telekinesis is good for mysticism training, and it lets you activate traps from a distance and not take damage.

My favorite thing about the ceramic bowl quest is that there's one sitting literally right next to Ranis that Ajira could have gotten for free if she just walked upstairs. Ranis likes to be in control. You'll discover that more and more through her quests. If she thinks someone is trying to sidestep her control or authority, she'll have you deal with them harshly. There are a couple of chests in the bunkroom of the fighter's guild that I normally use for early game storage. Might consider stashing some of your goodies to free up the carry weight

Oh dear, right out of the gate… Yes, welcome to Morrowind, which happily lets you sabotage yourself if you just keep doing bad things rather than be careful. Good news: 1000-gold bribes usually work, even with horrible skills. Time to hunt for that cash 🤣 And yes, Galbedir is probably one of the most useful people you'll come across in the entire game. At some point, you'll be swimming in cash and/or random enchanted items. What she lets you do (with a bit of juggling and preparation) is turn that into much better enchantments - most likely far better than you'll be able to make yourself without cheesing it a bit. Any cash you give her for training and enchantment services will then be available to her to buy the items you want to get rid of, so unlike most merchants, this is one of the few places where you can actually get the full value out of really expensive loot items. On a related note of usefulness, I saw it mentioned in a comment on the last episode: get the paper map that came with the game (you can find it as a high-res jpeg with very little searching around, or maybe it's even included in the download package depending on where you got your copy). It is far more useful for finding things than the in-game map, because many spots that won't show up in the in-game (world) map will be marked there with fair clear routes to get there. The in-game map is more useulf if you switch it to “Local” mode, to show you… well… the local area. For instance, the two locations the mages' guild quest sent you on are very obvious if you look at that map as you read along with their directions they give you. 35:40 No, that's per second. Yes, damage over time can get ridiculous. You'll note what a number it did on *your* health with what was probably a pretty mediocre roll. By the end of the game, with sufficient skill and attribute boosting, you'll be able to sling spells that do thousands (plural) points of damage over time even if the max damage of any spell is “only” 100. 42:20 Yes, you still have the problem that you carry around a bunch of junk. It's far better to think of it as Fo4 survival mode: you do outings to collect materials and bring that back to base, with a focus on bringing as much *back* as possible, not carrying it away. Back at base, you can do all that alchemy and whatnot with all the stuff you've collected. Carrying it (and the alchemy equipment) around just drains your fatigue faster.

Morrowind isn't nearly as punishing as Oblivion in terms of suboptimal levelling. Enemies don't scale with your level, you don't need to worry about levelling too fast! The only thing that really matters is that endurance early on is important for later on, but I think that's also the case in Oblivion (bonus HP from endurance applies at level up, it's not retroactive so 5 endurance at level 1 is worth loads more than 5 endurance at level 20)

A couple things to keep in mind: 1. Magic skills increase equally with each cast no matter the spells power 2. When you steal something from someone they will know and you will get arrested if you ever try to sell the same item type back 3. If you are playing around with alteration, the jump spell is a really fun way to travel 4. Usually the dialogue boxes are movable and you can stack admire or bribe right over persuasion so you can spam it for a bit to speed things up. 5. Sanctuary on low duration seems like a cowards spell that lets you wiggle more when running away from something

Yup selling in bulk the merchant will shaft you on the price.
@Jkend199
@Jkend199 2 сағат бұрын
So about mercantile: The value of the transaction (the difference between the asking price and the price you pay) determines how quickly mercantile goes up. One of the best ways to get mercantile up is to buy repair hammers, the hammers get automatically replaced when purchased, you can then sell them back to the guy. He has 10, you buy 10, he will still have 10 cuz they get automatically replaced, you then sell him back the 10 you bought and he will have 20. you can do it infinitely. The growth of mercantile depends on the transaction value, or rather the change in transaction value. That is to say, if you buy 100 hammers for a total of 1000 gold when he was asking for 1100 gold the transaction cost difference is 100, that gets you more mercantile than 10 hammer for 100, where the overall transaction value change was 10 gold. To grow mercantile you start out losing money on every transaction, but as long as you can lower the price even a little you get some mercantile. Do it for a while and you get to the break point where you can lower the price you buy it for by an amount equal to the price he will buy it back for. Example: He wants 1100 gold for 100 hammers, you offer 1000 and he accepts. He will then offer you 1000 to buy them back, and you can get him up to 1100. Do you see. you get mercantile on both sides of the transaction, talking his selling price down and then his buying price up. You can get to the point where you break the game. You can talk his selling price down below his buying price. You can literally buy something and talk his price down to 1000, then sell it right back to him and talk his buying price up to 1100. You can buy things out of a guys inventory and then sell those things back to him for more than you bought them for. Even if you don't want to use this skill to break the game you can definitely use mercantile to get personality up. If you are going to do it, bribe the guy until he has 100 disposition before you even start.

Jon, about your carrying capacity woes. You know Bound Spear as a backup, you could use that instead of carrying a heavy halberd. Same thing with the heavy mace you are carrying and the Bound Mace spell which you could learn at the guild. Minor Gameplay Spoiler Bound weapons are super meta. They are weightless, have infinite durability, and are better than unenchanted Daedric. By far the best thing you can use until you start messing with enchanting or get a powerful artifact. They are good enough to use for the whole game honestly and you may even want too use them beyond finding a powerful artifact due to the weightlessness and infinite durability. Becuse they are weightless they use much less fatigue when attacking than other weapons. Eventually, when you get deep into enchanting you can even make permeant bound items if you desire. Bound Armor is pretty busted too btw.

Some things that aren't necessarily obvious: 1. You CAN swing your weapon underwater. Unlike later TES and Fallout games, you don't have to be on shore to fight slaughter fish. 2. Ajirah will buy moon sugar! If you can repair your relationship with her, worth selling it to her, good money. 3. Intelligence DOES improve sandwich making. The sandwich making/ enchanting loop in this game mostly involves increasing your Intelligence more and more until you become a brain-god that can break reality with ridiculous super-potions and Green Lantern rings.

Intelligence is the foundational stat for sandwich making, so the Mentor's Ring is actually giving you a small boost. In fact, it is rumored that you can make a sandwich that will fortify your intelligence. Which you can drink to make a second, more powerful, fortify intelligence sandwich. I think my personal limit before I got bored was making super boosted potions that would fortify your intelligence by several million points, last for months of in-game time, and sold for tens of thousands of gold each.

Jon in Morrowind you're attribute modifiers are determined when you rest to level up. If you get 10 major/minor skills you can still raise other skills before you rest to get higher modifiers.

To get magic skills up, cast weak spells over and over again. you don't have to hit anything, you just need to succeed at casting. Inteligence and luck both affect potion strength! also there's three more pieces to the alchemy kit. the alembic, calculator, and retort.

If you want to raise mercantile faster, sell groups of things, like potions or arrows, individually, and always raise the price a little for each sale. Also if you steal stuff, like books from a bookstore, you can sell them to a different merchant, raise the price again, and make money as well as raise mercantile.

I've found, in a lot of ways, Morrowind (at least over the past year), feels more like BG3 than it does an Elderscrolls game; aside from the (hidden) dice rolls, it has an astounding level of player freedom, and it gives you enough rope to potentially hang yourself. :D I'd also argue that it focuses more on narrative elements than do the subsequent Elderscrolls games. Don't get me wrong.. I do genuinely enjoy Oblivion and Skyrim, but my first love is story-driven games, so Morrowind will always be my favourite. Also, very enjoyable episode, thank you! :)

Few tips: Mysticism is fast travel via teleportation, disarming traps via telekinesis, detecting keys, creatures and magic, soultrap and absorbing health. Easily the best school. Speech craft and illusion do similar things, illusion has more uses but is temporary and uses magicka, speech craft is more limited but permanent. Alteration has open, waterwalking, water breathing, and levitate, it's great for exploration. Alchemy lets you print money, even at low levels if you have good equipment. Dungeon diving caves in the bitter coast is generally safer than in other regions, and smugglers often have valuable loot. There are also a few good pieces of guaranteed loot around in the area. Skooma and moon sugar can be sold to khajiit merchants, and are extremely good weight to value. Ajira in particular has a decentish amount of money, and likes you because you did her missions.

There's a proffesion that even someone as green as Aria can do, and it pays better than making sammitches - Soultrapper. Just go dumpster diving into those ownerless crates strewn across town, some will have petty soulgems. Go into Tombs and stuff skeletons into those gems, and you can make decent money. If you can buy common gems, you can stuff ghosts into them, and one ghost gem is like half of Mentor's Ring.

You should check out the shops more closely. Especially enchanters and general stores, they can have really useful items like the amulet of stamina in the mages guild. It's rather weak but also dirt cheap and recharges in about a minute. Also, just like in oblivion, taverns sell lots of food for alchemy. 10 points of intelligence or luck are equal to one extra point of alchemy. A better mortar and pestle also wouldn't hurt.
