I don't mean to be a douchebag but it's not irony. It's coincidence. Irony would be if he was meant to be a force to stop assassination and then got assassinated because of that trait. And don't blame me for pointing this out blame George Carlin's stand up routine that clarified the meaning of irony and that people seem to name something as ironic when it is coincidence. Anyway, I'm off to fuck my hand and smoke some crack... I love the internet... and crack

Think you mean it adds to the population. Culture doesn't change. In fact it helps assimilate cities, since you can build palace upgrades sooner (palace culture has a HUGE impact on Culture Penalty...) Awesome way to build up your core cities early on, though, to get some decent units early. Or frontier towns later in the game, to get highways built ASAP...

It's really cool how stories emerge with the characters in Rome Total War. I recognized Captain Useless immediately, because in my most memorable game he was a faction leader who presided over a massive expansion of my Empire, conquering Greece and Macedonia and moving into Asia Minor. He wasn't a great general, but he was a fantastic administrator and lived into his mid 80s, so he must have ruled the faction for at least half a century. He never really did anything special, but I'll always remember him as the guy who took me from rags to riches, and when he died it really felt like the end of an era; this was all years ago and he's the only one I really remember. Put him in a city with a library, he might just surprise you!

27:00 about the temples. I've started a Scipii game myself! Medium/medium because I'm a softy like that. I quickly took over syracuse, made it my capitol, and started grooming Messana to be my Super Unit production city. Sent over "settler" peasants, put my best educated generals there, built up the infrastructure etc. As of 147 turns into the game, that city is pumping out standard legionary cohorts every turn for my war in Egypt. They all come standard with 13 attack 21 defense (gold/gold, 2 chevrons). I love the scipii!
@ManyATrueNerd
@ManyATrueNerd 7 жыл бұрын
Oh, Scipii are fine, but I hold the Brutii are objectively better - because Pantheon of Mars + Foundry would be pushing out those legions just as fast, but they'd be 15 attack 23 defence with silver/silver on the upgrades, but 3 XP which more than compensates...
@Olmelliah
@Olmelliah 7 жыл бұрын
Oh dear! Um, so I sort of got my statistics wrong. I was going off of a website's statics for the roman armies rather than actually checking in game. I made a terrible mistake. Okay, so between the foundry and the Pantheon of Vulcan, the standard legionary cohort actually comes up to 14 attack, 27 defense (chevrons and upgrades included). Also, I've been meaning to ask, if you know the answer: do you know what hit points do? All units have 1 hit point, except for general's bodyguards, which come with 2. If you answered it in the video, I apologize. >.>
@weerribben47

26:00 no, actually there are HUGE differences between Law and Happiness. Law reduces Corruption: directly increasing your tax income by a percentage in a settlement (or rather, not losing a % you normally would). This becomes massively powerful in very large/rich cities. Happiness just reduces garrison requirements (which Law does as well)

Bacchus (being the god of wine and parties) also seems to increase the chances of governors in that city getting drinking traits, which are usually bad. So in other words, Jupiter is just way better than Bacchus.

Did you know that the romans can "take over" certain gods from other nations? i distinctly remember that in my julii campaign, i conquered a gaul city, and they had a shrine which gave experience to cavalry. And i could actually turn that god "roman" and upgrade it to level 5. PS: always build siege equipment, even if you dont need it. youmight get a useful trait that way. also, hilariously, if you skip a generals speeches all the time, he might get the "boring speaker" negative trait

@Supadubya
@Supadubya 4 жыл бұрын
None of that is true. Boring Speaker isn't affected by skipping speeches. Its main triggers include rioting in a city you control (can also lead to "Rabble Rouser" or "Inspiring Speaker": basically riots force your governor to give speeches to try and calm the riots down...) And, you can't assimilate temples. You CAN *upgrade* temples of another nation ONLY if their God is of the same "type" as yours. For instance Saturn is a "God of Law" in the code, whereas Jupiter is a "God of Justice". If you take over a temple of justice as the Julii or a temple of law as the Scipii, you can upgrade it into a Temple of Jupiter (as the Julii) or Saturn (as the Scipii) of higher tier. However it's hard to know what temples you can do this with without looking at the code... FWIW, temples of the same type give identical benefits. This is a clue as to which gods are identical. For instance, Nike and Mars aren't the same: gods of Victory and War, respectively. But there is an Egyptian god of Law, if I remember correctly (forget which one it is...) and I think Isis (the Egyptian goddess) was the equivalent of Juno...

Sooooooooo you convinced me to get this game, i started up a major battle (the one with Sparta) and put it on easy (because I'm a noob at these strategy take-over-the-world games) and as you can probably guess... That ended terribly. I got chewed up into pieces. So at this point i realise i should probably do the tutorial. I do this and i learnt the game decently well but as i'm fighting a war on two fronts against not only Greece but the Gauls too (as the Julii), i get my second best family member- after Gaius (the faction and family leader), Secundus Julius murdered by a crappy Gaul rush in their weakest town. This game is stress :D So from there i panic, sent Gaius from the new city i just sacked from the Greeks with approx. 500 men- 100 of which are heavy cavalry, and destroyed the ever living crap out of every single Gaul family member i could find, revenge is sweet.

For what Micheal Pulka said, most historical battles you're playing as the losing side and are basically told to win a battle that was historically lost. Best example is the historical battle where you're Brutii vs Parthia, which is basically an excercise in masochism last time i checked. The other really hard battle is Teutoborg forest, which is the battle that curbed all of rome's ambitions of expanding into Germania and is by far one of the biggest losses in rome's history. The easiest historical battle is probably river trebia. There you're playing as the victor of the battle, one of the greatest generals in history, Hannibal Barca, and while the romans have a larger army, you have the strategic advantage. Just use your cavalry/ elephants wisely and you got this =P Just remember- in rome total war flanking is key, surround and rout units using infantry as the anvil and cavalry as the hammer, that's your bread and butter maneuver in the game, Other thing to remember is that phalanx, especially high tier phalanx like spartans slaughter anything in front of htem, but their flanks are really weak, isolate units and encircle/pelt with missiles.

Correction on the temples for anyone curious: The Brutii DO get a temple with 10% bonus to happiness each level, it's just disguised as the temple of health (Juno). Basically it's 5% from the temple itself, and another 5% from the health bonus. BUT! When you have a settlement with a growth rate that's over 5% per turn, then any added growth (in increments of .5%) adds another 5% to your happiness. So if I have a settlement with a growth rate of 5% and i build a temple to Juno, thus pushing the growth rate to 5.5%, then I effectively have a temple that can provide a 15%!!! happiness boost per level of temple, which is insane. Also of note, the Scipii with the temple of Vulcan can actually train the best troops. Having better weapons and armor is far superior to having more experience. A one level increase to both weapons and armor is about the same as 3 levels of experience (despite what the stat card says), as I've found in custom battles.

Also Jupiter is way better than Bacchus for the Julii. Law improves public order and reduces garrison requirements but also reduces the money siphoned off by the corruption effect, making it a great choice for large cities. General happiness only improves public order and reduce garrison requirements, so it's weaker.

The Brutii temple of Mars can cause generals to get some bad traits as can the drinking one for the Julii also the Scipii temples don't and the pantheon level forging one gives +2 exp rank for troops better equipment which you can't earn in battle like exp and 10% law which reduces your income loss from corruption and its so easy to just go east and take what the Brutii should and cripple them for the entire game and its not to hard to do it to the Julii as well. It's worth noting that there is a difference between Bacchus and Jupiter. The bonus to law that Jupiter yields also reduces corruption which can increase your settlement's profitability later down the line. I've also heard, though haven't confirmed, that Bacchus can make it more likely for any family members in that settlement to pick up drinking related traits.

Classics Jon may be best Jon yet. EDIT: Keep never stopping. The best gameplay is from a commentator who is so good at the game, replays are required to understand what's going on. I'm starting to fall in love with this series.

I couldn't tell if you were being cheeky or not, but your quote is spectacularly appropriate in this context, since it comes from Pyrrhus of Epirus, after winning a battle against Rome, as quoted by Plutarch: "If we are victorious in one more battle with the Romans, we shall be utterly ruined" ... the origin of our expression of Pyrrhic victory.

Brilliant videos. This is one of my favourite childhood games. One feature from medieval total war that didn't make it into Rome that i really miss is the ability to turn on your ally at any point in the battle. I loved it.

33:04 I always moved "useless" young generals like that into an army that is currently on campaign so the "good" general there can tutor him. He'll also gain the XP and other bonuses for being in fights. After a few upgrades while at war, I'll then move him to a medium wealth city with a good administrator to learn from him. Characters can gain good traits by being with other characters. Just don't put him into an impoverished backwater where he'll just stagnate and don't put him into a rich city where he'll spoil, and he can make up for those early negatives quite quickly.

If I'm not mistaken, law also has the additional effect of countering corruption, which makes law temples very good in far-flung provinces, possibly even better than trade temples. That's why the "harsh ruler" series of traits that increase unrest but also increase law are still net positive traits.

Just realized after all these years. Jon was saying that the Julia temples don't make a difference in game. But the temple of Bacchus, I believe, since that was dedicated to like the God of wine, generals stationed there actually could go down the acoholic personality trait chain. Where at first I believe your general gives morale boost but then he can turn into a drunk and give negative effects lol. At least I believe thats why I thought a lot of my generals would develop that lol

Wow! I've played this game for about 10yrs now off and on and have figured out a few of its nuances especially with negotiating extras when being asked to trade with a nation and getting rome to pay me money for a few turns if i promise to attack rebels or getting the higher up factions like greek and macedonians to pay 10k if i stop the war with them, but i've never realized or even known that certain settlements were more favourable to roman rule than others based on their cultures. There's certainly a lot more going on in this game than I gave it credit for. Now I'm going to have to google on its nuances and such. It certainly gives the game a differen't dimension for me to explore

Doing a playthrough of the Brutii atm. I got to Segestica only to find the Gauls sieging it. Then the senate wanted me to take Patavium so I defeated the Gauls and pursued them to Patavium and brought up a smaller army to take segestica. Only for the Macedonians to show up and take it. People really want that wine.

About the War with the Greeks: I played as the Julii, and I actually had to send a force there, since the Brutii couldn't handle it with the AI. Wound up conquering Greece myself. Actually, I ended up doing the work for both the Scipii and Brutii in Greece, Egypt, Thrace, and the Levant--to say nothing of my warring against the Gauls, Germans, Spaniards, and worst of all, the Britons.

Wrong. Law-based happiness decreases the effects of public disorder, and also decreases the effects of corruption losses. Happiness-based happiness is just a flat value that deals with nothing else.Law shrines are best if you just want an empire to run more smoothly and make more money in distant cities from the capital.

there IS a MASSIVE difference to law bonuses compared to happiness bonuses. law bonus not only increases public order...it also REDUCES CORRUPTION! which is awesome for improving income especially at later stages when corruption is draining your income extremely quickly. temple of ceres does NOT increase farm output...but simply increases population growth

So during the battle of Salona, I actually found that more often than not the Cilician Pirates will draw up near the equites (if you have them of course). So what I have done ever since I've discovered that, I would find a patch of tall grass and group my equites next to a unit of hidden velites. When the Cilician pirates would (supposedly) charge my equites, they would not only be pelted with a surprise rain of javelins, the javelins would be followed up with a charge of equites. I found this to be much more effective to rid the town of one of the (arguably) stronger units. Just thought I'd share (two years later, that is)

"Another victory like that and we are done for." - Pyyrhus of Epirus. Also in Total War Warhammer any unit can technically run up to a gate and whittle it down, but you can't initiate a siege without either siege equipment or a unit with the 'living siege engine' trait, like giants. Also most basic infantry will take ages to knock down a gate.
