I had the opportunity to see her at 2016 worlds, she was called at the gala the "LEGENDARY" Mao Asada, and seeing this clips with all of her performances sums it all, she really is a legend, and a little wake up to the judges, they tended to scrutinize with the closest zoom all her mistakes, and now they look away the same mistakes of many ladies today and reward them with so high scores. Mao should have been able to brake the 140 points barrier looking ago, but the judges have a hard time on counting all the "wrongs" they saw and deducted as much as they could. But seeing this makes remember of how the performance breaks the judging, and becomes timeless and cries out for fairness in this sport.

What makes Mao amazing is that she continued to work on EVERY aspect of her skating throughout her career and it really shows in this video. Instead of just leaving out weaker jumps or elements like her contemporaries, she was willing to completely strip down & retool her jump technique, add the salchow back in, work on the lutz edge, while also making progress in choreography, footwork, and spins. Probably one of the best skaters in history in terms of all-around skill development. She never took the easy road - and lost some competitions because of it - but I respect her so much for it.

To watch her Free Skate in Sochi, I left my first-year university exam early, to make it back home on time. I didn't do brilliantly in that exam, but it was totally worth it. Mao proved at the Sochi Olympics that a great skater doesn't need a medal. Over the years, she has taken more pleasure in showing off her quality skills than her grades and rankings. Jumps, spins, steps, spirals... she was the only athlete in her active career with a high overall skill level, but the judges didn't love her. The Rachmaninov FP is phenomenal. I am from the UK, I do feel Mao was unfairly singled out for under-rotations and edge calls, especially with what skaters got away with in the past, and if I am honest what some skaters seem to get away with now (and even at 2014 Sochi!). She really improved her jump technique throughout her career. Her PCS should be through the roof here. And, then we get to Mao's step sequences. First, the choreography, excellent, then the technique, the edges, the twizzles, the turns, in one direction then in the other, then the musicality, she hits every note, every beat, the choreography is so tricky, because it would be obvious if she was even a fraction out of time (there is a jump in the stsq which *has* to hit the music and does of course), and then the artistry, performance, skating skills, and finally, not least *star* quality. Mao, we miss you. We hope you know you are an inspiration, special, memorable, historic, and heroic. You are beloved of this generation and will be loved and respected by generations to come.

Actually, all of Mao’s moves in the step sequence was on time and should have been on time. It would have been so obvious. Her kicks, little leg kicks and rocker and counters also had to be in time. It’s amazing how much control she had. She should have outright won the free skate. She had some harsh calls on her technical elements and her PCs were way too low. Her body movement, transitions and steps throughout her program way surpassed Yuna and no doubt, Sotnikova.

That’s why lot of people even same skaters showed their action of unfairness. I like Koreans then don’t be angry. Just ,, count the post of videos and comments on KZbin. Ikr! She received a lot of criticism for that too. Many people called her a baby for looking so disappointed, but those people will never know what it feels like to be in her position. The Japanese media were in her face all the time leading up to the Olympics, making it clear that they expected her to win. And then when she gets there she trips over a rut in the ice and misses crucial jumps, causing her to lose by a wide margin. How crushing that must have been for her. And then people have the audacity to say that she’s a poor sport. How would they feel if they had to stand on the podium knowing that their home country’s media is going to blast you for “letting your country down”? Anyone would have a hard time smiling after that.

31:01 this is honestly one of the most iconic pieces of Olympics video ever made, I think. Everyone knew - especially Mao and the present crowd - that this one fall about to be shown marked the downfall of one of the best Olympic athletes in our little world's history. She would end up with only one Olympic medal - a Silver - probably all because of this one little fall. ... But you know what? It ironically doesn't matter. Mao Asada is still and always will be one of the most phenomenal, utterly breathtaking talents to ever strap on skates. She is an artist, and a gritty competitor; a bright bright star. Always

Her spiral, step sequences, flexibility, triple axels... are simply extraordinary. People criticise Mao for her wrong edges, underrotation, inconsistency with jumping 3A, but they fail to realise that she's the only woman at the time to challenge such technically difficult programmes everytime, and by that she put her chance to win at risk. Isn't that what a real athlete should look like? In this regard, I would say Mao is the best female skater of all time
@Google-U3 жыл бұрын
Since she was a little girl, she wanted to win the competition with a perfect program, but before long, she had the ambition to show herself more evolved than the last time. I read an interview with Mao a long time ago: "I know the level I was at before, so I can't be happy if I do less than that. I have a goal and I want to achieve it, so I challenge myself." Before the Sochi FS, her coach told her to change to 2A instead of 3A, but she refused. And she succeeded. There were a lot of things that went wrong in her competitive life, but she is the best athlete ever, including those things!
