This documentary was very historically engrossing. I definitely got a better understanding of the Cultural Revolution and the devastating Chinese famine. I know a number of Communists. They speak of the Chinese Cultural Revolution as superficially as the wonders of tea spilled in a shallow saucer. They never mention the millions who died because of Mao's unfortunate myopic eyesight. The u.s. and British "historians" who lie about Mao and the far-east in general have not helped to clarity history, but then many u.s. historians have never intended to clarify the trenches of history.

youre missing the part of the masses making history. Capitalist "historians" who you are echoing here like to attribute things to personalities in reality millions were involved and there were mistakes made as with any body doing anything new. You should look into the US historical process where they INTENTIONALLY kidnapped and GENOCIDED MILLIONS of people to develop this country and did it as anti-democratically as possible and who have repeatedly MURDERED striking workers all throughout its history. More people have been murdered on this planet by the actions of American capitalists than any one else ever on earth

What series of victories against the Japanese? They did nothing after the 100 regiments battle. The KMT armies did ALL the fighting against the Japanese! The Coms and Red Army just sat the war out in their base on Shaanxi. Bah!

It is such a tragedy that Sun died so soon and both Mao and Chiang did not find a way to settle their difference in the very beginning, compromising and working together towards the benefit of all the Chinese people equally and for the greater good for all of China. Instead, the individual and the combined decisions, actions and choices made by both Mao and Chiang, along with the others, as presented in this video, collectively contributed to in one form or another, a window of opportunity for Japan to set up the puppet state of Manchukuo. Instead, had these leaders worked together more diligently towards reforming the failures of their predecessors of the late Qing dynasty, the innumerable heinous atrocities and war crimes the Japanese committed might have been prevented and thwarted. The legacy that these men have left behind for all Chinese people as whole, is the wisdom to realize that compromise and mutual understanding is the best way to ensure an even greater, stronger and more resilient China for future generations to come.

I think how history has play out for both Mao and Chiang is the best outcome for China. Having both parties sharing power will ultimately lead to a unproductive constant bickering of different political views like what we go through here in the US between Democrats and Republicans. China is blessed right now to have a one party system lead by the CPC. It can focus more on progress and long term planning. This has been the key to China new birth and success into the superpower that it is today.

@@walden6272After what I experienced in Africa I cannot agree more. When you have a kleptocratic like Chiang in power, the challenges of the people are not met. Democracy is only as strong as the consensus of opposing ideologies or interests for the greater good of the country. In the USA its actually the illusion of bickering parties on arbitrary issues like imprisoning illegal migrants or prosecuting minorities for minor offences of gender bias etc. At the end of the day, the real culprits ie the ones who employ illegal migrants will never be called out/prosecuted for slave labour. Income inequality will not be re-addressed nor affordable healthcare but fighting wars in foreign countries will as it supports corporate interests. China has by its nature avoided a fascist state which the USA is. The day the CCP falls will be the day of the rise of fascism in China as no government would be able to withstand corruption as the USA has succumbed to. Many speak of a middle income trap for Asian countries but upon further inspection Japan, South Korea & Taiwan are vassal states of the USA therefore Japan has had to derail its wellbeing so that the Americans can prosper, Germany is on the brink of the same trap as its economy grinds to a halt for not investing in infrastructure nor future product development. The next 50 years will see a new world order whether we like it or not because the USA has run out of countries to exploit for producing cheap products/resources for US consumption & markets to dump American goods. The main factor not being its so-called free market economy or American Freedom & Democracy. Whatever that means but an overwhelming fiscal debt compounded annually for being a militarised state. The USA is no different than Prussia with the only difference being that the nations challenging the US at the moment are no stronger than the Habsburgs were nor France in 1870. We all know what happened 50 years after 1870.

I swear, if I see another political ad I'm done. I used to read books and fall asleep. Or, learn.... Thinking it's time to go old school again. I might be just one person but, I own over 200 books. Pretty sure there's one I can read again. It was nice to listen because I'm getting older and need reading glasses but enough is enough. American and I can only vote for one. Whether I like them or not. And it's definitely not going to be the brain dead hyena who is less competent than the dementia patient currently in charge of my country. Have I made my point or should I just go open one of my history books or a good old school thriller? Up to you.

If Chiang Kai-Shek (蔣中正) were alive today, how would he view modern-day China? Chiang Kai-Shek would LOVE China. “One can imagine Chiang Kai-shek's ghost wandering around China today nodding in approval, while Mao's ghost follows behind him, moaning at the destruction of his vision.” - a wise man CKS ruled China as an authoritarian capitalist. Since 1978, China is exactly that way today, but much richer. CKS would be impressed by China’s economic growth. The ROC suffered attacks from Japan and the USSR. It was too dependent on the US, whom CKS quietly resented. But if he saw that China is the second most powerful nation today, CKS would be impressed by China’s political power. The ROC is so dependent on the US that it was able to stop the ROC from building a nuclear bomb. But mainland China today not only has nuclear bombs, it has a nuclear triad, cyber-army, and other state-of-the art weapons. China can also defend its own interests in its backyard. CKS would be impressed by China’s military power. Chiang said China’s foreign policy is to resist imperialism and not be imperialist itself, yet was too weak to follow this policy. But today, it can resist imperialism since foreign nations can no longer bully China. It used to promote Communism, but no longer discriminates based on ideology. And China doesn’t interfere with others’ internal affairs, unless it feels threatened. CKS would be impressed by China’s foreign policy. Mainland China under CKS was too divided: too many Japanese puppets, local warlords, Communist sympathizers, and even KMT members wanting to overthrow him. China was simply too big for Chiang. But today, China is almost united. It re-took Hong Kong and Macau. Taiwan is de-facto independent, but officially still Chinese. PRC did give up a lot of land the ROC still claims, especially Mongolia, but considering that PRC can manage 1.4 billion people when he couldn’t manage 550 million, I still think CKS would be impressed by China’s unity. However, I think CKS would be sad that China achieved almost everything he wanted without him. Sad, but impressed. And just imagine how he would feel after seeing Taiwan today. Poor Chiang, I do feel sorry for him sometimes. By Paul Byi

@mbroadhurst :: Comparing trump to Mao, in Mao's time, is like comparing Einstein to Shemp ! Mao and trump are on two very different intellectual levels ; very different sacrifices. trump isn't on any intellectual level ( he can barely read ). trump does not, has not made any sacrifices for the betterment of his country. Mao made mistakes, but he cannot be placed in history as _the trump of his time._
