There's a lot of detail in this anime, like in Frieren. Something else to keep in mind is Maomao is a commoner. In the era and setting of the anime, commoners are the bottom of the ladder. She's working in the Emperor's palace with most everyone there outranks her. Even with her "promotion". It helps to understand why she doesn't want to stand out or be noticed, because she has no power as a commoner, and if she gets sucked into the power struggles of the palace, she has no leverage to use.

Amazing story wise anime 😊 Jinshi may not my fav male characters bit at least he can help maomao however he want when there is a chance..it just his persistent personality I dislike (Etc.when he do whatever he want and touching Maomao without her her consent) Talk ablout Gyokuyou..Her VA is the same person as Frieren..That's unexpected....Pairin VA is one of my beloved one Ami Koshimizu...

I think it's for testing mostly and to try and throw her off her game and test her resolve as she will be around high/powerful people and she's from the bottom of the latter and having a lady in waiting that is "ill tempered" would reflect badly on her lady but him annoying her also shows others to stay away and that he's watching her so she won't be targeted by other girls who might be mad she got promoted
