Map Hack: How to Make a National Geographic-Like Inner Border

Here is how to give polygons an inner ring of color. National Geographic calls this a ribbon or band. ArcGIS Pro calls it a donut effect. Whatever you call it, here is a delicious and handsome way to apply an inner band of color to map areas, without any gaps or jaggies.

Is this donut feature new to ArcGIS Pro, or has it been there the whole time? I feel like i've needed to do this so many times but i never got it right. Maybe this method would work for shading as well, like a way to improve the accuracy of drop shadows or highlights of specific areas?

Do you by chance know a way to create my own DEM? I'm trying to recreate a fictive map and would love to make it 3D. But I have absolutely no idea, how to get the mountain ranges to where I need them to be in the map... Would love to have a Sims 3 tool to just click somewhere and the ground lifts up or sinks down 😅

you can open an image editor program like photoshop and use the airbrush tool and draw gray and then white areas over a black background. it will be a lot of work to get something realistic, but it's one way to make an elevation data source from scratch.
