You are the most brilliant man on the internet. I have spent 2 weeks of my life scouring literally 50-70 videos, Reddit, Google etc. on how to make a moving line on a map, simply and quickly. It's as if the entire human race RESISTS simplicity! 95% of those prefer to hear the sound of their own voice and cannot restrain their egos from showing hundreds of complex moves which would take hours and days to replicate (picture a complicated Rube Goldberg machine which, after 20 minutes of tortuous bells, steam whistles and roundabouts, pours a glass of water at the end). I have a very large and long documentary to edit and to follow their way would take me centuries to complete my project. A couple of level-headed Scandinavian guys came close at around 10 minutes, but you are the clear winner. Thank you deeply for your genius - I will treasure your video!

Thanks Brent - i was going to message you to get a tip on how to do this, google search and your video came up promptly. I completed the "Out West Tour" over the weekend, based on your Tour De Vic. We completed 1770km over 4 days with day 2 reaching 39 degrees C!!!! was a great adventure, piecing together a video now. Thanks for creating so many videos with tips and tricks, much appreciated

Wow... riding in 39C is tough... I've done that once... and I hope I don't have to do it too many times again. yes, this video was how I started with animated maps... then I moved to Keynote animation... and finally Geolayers (which is a professional grade mapping package)... but very steep learning curve and price.

Cool thanks for giving more tips if I ever want to go that deep into it. I did find a little trick you can smoothly zoom in and around a map with a touch screen laptop to capture a pretty good short map clip via snip video tool, it doesn’t stutter on zoom like mouse roller. Yea the 39 degrees was killer and we know we can do it again if have to - it was the Echuca to Mildura leg, were some fires around so skipped hattah kulkyne that arvo and hit the tarmac last 150km - air temp in tyre got to 59 degrees ! We were all just hoping no one’s bike would blow up running highway speed at 39 degrees - especially the thumpers. Day 1 11.5hr and 8 of riding Day 2 8 hrs and 6 of riding Day 3 9hrs 40 and 7.5hrs riding Day 4 8 hrs and 6.25 hrs riding Smashed out the 1770km - it was a good challenge

This approach works fine for somewhat linear tracks, however for tracks that travel in significantly different directions (like your example, which has nearly a full loop near Hill End), you would probably get a smoother result by animating a mask.
@brentbat
@brentbat 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are 100% correct... its a super simple technique only works in some situations. I haven't done animated masks before, but I might give it a shot next time I have a circular route to animate.

OK, You need proper mapping tools. I use GaiaGPS for my Adventure ride planning. It allows me to have organised folders of waypoints within a trip folder (I have one for fuel stops, one for lookouts and points of interest, one for shops etc.). It will build routes for you and allow you to tailor these by dragging and dropping. There are apps that rn on your phone etc. So hopefully this will work for you. there are lots of great video tutorials on how to use GaiaGPS. goto HTTP://gaiagps.com

Thanks for the tutorial, I would just use a animated mask in those cases where the line comes back the other way like in your example (on a mountain road with serpentines it would be even more obvious). I am just a beginner at editing, but I think the wipe transition has some limitations.

@@felixonaheavybike8887 I have a 4K monitor, so I am getting good high-res screen shots. Not sure what to do if you only have a small monitor, perhaps you can temporarily plug into a high-res monitor, grab the screen shot, or else ask a friend with a big monitor to get the screenshots for you.

If you are running a Mac Book Pro with high res screen you should be able to just snapshot that as per normal. Even if it's not true 4K, and you have to up-res it a bit, it should still look amazing.

@brentbat

Depending on your editor and the version of your Operating System, you could do this using a "Clock wipe".... Now strangely I just noticed that this is missing from Premiere Pro on the Mac (but it is on Premiere Pro on Windows)... Don't ask me why, but if I need to do that, I'll try and hunt for a 3rd party transition to download.
