The Cannondale is back, it has changed colour, and everyone is completely worn down and worn out with the whole situation.
This is the Cannondale Gen 3 SuperSix Evo to replace the 2nd replacement frame featured in the first Fake Warranty video.
No refund was given as of yet...

As the owner of this bike i thought i would leave a comment ,after my original frame was goosed i was left with the option of another cannondale frame at crash replacement cost of £1000 or buy a frame independently at rrp and in the £1000 price bracket there was not a lot to choose that i would be confident in quality/having the same defects as cannondale.I now have a bike with no defects and as for warranty? its not worth the paper its written on anyway .Thank you Mapdec my bike rides like a dream

I'm going to date myself because this was ~30 years ago, but when I was 15 I bought a *used* Cannondale. I subsequently stripped down the paint and repainted it. About a year later the aluminum frame cracked at the bottom bracket. I brought it to the bike shop and they gave me a new frame under the lifetime warranty, and they absolutely didn't have to. It made me a customer for life, and I subsequently purchased a few more Cannondales. I know it isn't realistic to have these sorts of warranties today, but this story is disappointing given my experience as a teenager.

What I cannot help thinking is what would have happened if the customer did not have a professional bike mechanic to support his case? It sounds as if Cannondale will happily tell whatever lies required to keep themselves from taking any responsibility, let alone be of any help or support to a customer who has paid good money for one of their products. Someone ought to take them to court.

Unfortunately, small budget companies including new Chinese companies don’t build bikes that ride as well as these bikes. Building quality carbon bike is a challenge but laying different grades of carbon plies on different sections of the frame is a trade secret. Hence these trade secrets make the all difference. I think there are many good Chinese brands who can make fast quality wheels but they still need more time to catch up with Giant or BMC. Ican and nextie are making really good wheels but the frames and forks no.

The rear brake on my mate's old CAAD used to stick open due to the dodgy routing design, the brake cable actually cut a groove into the frame 🫣
@rcg9573
@rcg9573 10 ай бұрын
Even many of the older aluminum CAADs had very suspect quality control (not all, but the QC even from years ago was suspect). I had one that got put down during a crash and had an odd looking dented downtube. Upon close inspection the material under the paint that had been scraped off had an odd reddish/brown color to it, and when you rubbed on it it flaked off almost like dried out powder. Took it to a local bike shop (not the shop I had bought it from because I'd moved) and when the LBS inspected it they determined that the brown looking material was apparently some type of filler putty (putty commonly used in the auto industry to fill small dents and imperfections in auto bodies). Apparently the frame's downtube had been dented before it was through complete fabrication and instead of doing a proper repair and pulling out the dent and checking it for structural integrity or just scrapping the frame they filled it with putty, sanded it smooth and then sent it to final paint because the paint was the original from the factory paint for that year and model CAAD frame. When the LBS sent the frameset and apparent issue to Crackandfail for warranty inspection their reply was the frame would not be warrantied because it had been crashed. This despite the fact they sold an obvious not fit for use defective product as Brand New with a defect that had nothing to do with the crash.

This reminds me of my warranty adventures with another similar composite material - kevlar. In my younger days I had a custom built kevlar canoe built for me after saving up to buy it for 5 years. It was 17 feet long and weighed 20.4 kilos. For its inaugural use I took it to a remote river here in Canada for a five day trip. The first time I sat in the stern seat the seat detached and collapsed me into the bottom of the boat. Distraught I began to duct tape it back into position (I really wanted to go on this trip!) but while doing this noticed ever single rivet holding the gunnel on the boat (the seat assembly was attached to the gunnel) was mispunched. As the gunnels have a lot to do with the integrity of the whole boat hull I realized the canoe was useless and even dangerous to use. It turned out the canoe was made by a fellow on his first day on the job who was incorrectly trained but there was a warranty. The owner of the company was also so embarrassed he built me a new canoe himself to ensure its quality. The second canoe looked exceptional but had a different problem. In his enthusiasm to make the hull bombproof he laid in extra layers of kevlar and resin - way too much and put in extra robust wood fittings for the seat, thwarts and carrying yoke. The woodwork and kevlar looked lovely but it weighed over 25 kilos. I needed a sub 22 kilo canoe because I knew on some trips I’d be portaging it on trails several kilometers long along with my other gear. Just like in cycling a few extra kilos make a difference when you are doing things like weighing your dried food and calculating calorie density, there’s little room for error on wilderness trips that are weeks long on lakes that may be several days travel from an access point.

"By design" does not mean well built. It means that in order to keep manufacturing costs low and volumes high, a certain amount of variation and defects are tolerated, knowing that most consumers will not complain, and the cost of replacing a frame for those that do, is lower than the costs of making all frames without such defects. It is cheaper to ship a frame that hasn't been faced, and if most customers do not complain, this lower quality increases profits. This is why bespoke metal bikes are so much better. The customer is only buying one, and the builder knows they have to get it right, because a do-over is just too expensive.

I've read various manual of frames/bottom brackets, some suggest using grease/assembly paste some suggest running it dry. Kogel suggest coating, ceramicspeed refers to a frame manual but uses grease in some instruction videos, Parktool advises coating, CEMA advises ceramic assembly paste, Factor advises a 641 retaining compound. Some carbon frames uses raw aluminium bores to recieve the cups, is that a different case than with carbon only bores? Shouldn't galvanic corrosion between carbon and aluminium be a concern? Most of the cups are anodized, therefore it should not but so are aluminium posts which totally can corrode in a carbon frame. Couldn't get more confused :D

Mapdec, assuming you sell complete, pre-assembled bicycles, how far do you go with a build? Are you removing the installed press-fit bb and checking the size of the bottom bracket hole? If it is a fully internal bike, are you removing the fork and hoses entirely to check the headtube?
@Mapdec
@Mapdec 10 ай бұрын
On the rare occasion we sell something that comes as a complete build, yes. We virtually dismantle it and rebuild it. Our customers pay for this service as they want the peace of mind that everything is perfect. A lot of the time we adjust messy and noisy cable routing, face up the surfaces and remove a shed load of that horrible white grease.

I've been riding bikes all my life AND I STILL QUESTION the WARRANTY OFFERED BY BRANDS - because they all just don't seem to matter and they all suck. WHY? because every time I break my frame (carbon) they will all say it's riders fault and warranty is void...so it really doesn't matter what warranty you have - because companies rarely honor them. So now I ride chromoly, steel or aluminum bikes then all my headaches from warranty claims are effing gone!

If I had a shop I can trust, I would also let them fix it up. Warranty is pointless if you get the same s**t quality back. So, better chances of having a hassle-free longterm relationship with a bike if it just works. However, I wouldn't cover it on KZbin for the small chance that something else breaks and Cannondale doesn't notice those corrections, likely if they send out frames like that. 😅

Break and fail = Cannondale! They don't want to be responsible for their product and take into account that customers get injured or worse. Great video, thanks! Regarding your question, what would i do? Buy a proper Aluminium or bespoke Titanium frame. This bike is a prime example what's wrong with modern carbon bikes. No way this rear mech hanger mount would survive a crash.

These Videos are sooo good and very much appreciated by my side, as someone who doesnt often buy a new bike or have to put up with this warranty nightmare. The Insight about the qualtiy of the frames are a warning for me and a validation about my suspicion that the high prices frames and bikes cant be that much better than the mid range stuff. If you get the chance, i would love to see Videos about other brands, their handling with such things and the quality of the Frames.

Well, you did right by your customer, as this was the customers wish. But personally I’d have send it back until they would send a frameset that could be properly built up without voiding the warranty. These companies need to feel that they can’t keep getting away with delivering sub-par products otherwise they may never learn.

From 6 to 8 min in just shows one should buy a good titanium frameset and build or have built a custom bike for yourself. All the big brands have created their own BB standards, headset and seat tube setups. That way you are saddled with dealing with their dealers and shops for service. Cheers to Mapdec for exposing this lunacy!

Great work. I'd much rather see frames that can be rescued from landfill by a competent mechanic than frames which are simply dangerous and impractical to repair. I would have chosen the same option as the owner knowing that the bike was prepared and assembled by someone who knows what they are doing.

The whole process, from bad design ( rear axle positioning, weakened top headset cup) substandard construction (BB cups, overspray in seat tube) all the way through to Cannondale' s customer service or lack thereof, for what is clearly not even a basic frame screams of a company that has cut costs to maximise profit and thanks to Mapdec highlighting this saga has now put a lot of people from using that brand. I just hope the customer is pleased with his finished bike... I would question the green highlights though 😂

I’m thinking this is the thin edge of what happens when bike brands operate to maximise profit/ are bought out by venture capital businesses. Their philosophy is always how can we make more money and wherever they operate workers are laid off, corners are cut and customer service comes behind servicing shareholders. Every cyclist needs to think carefully about the bike they’re buying in terms of the company, service and warranty and have a very good LBS. eg I had a Trek Crockett alloy frame which split at the seat post. York Cycle Works sent it off under warranty ( frame was years old ) and Trek gave me a brand new frame. I use three bike shops with certified mechanics and have never had a creaking BB. I’ve cycled for over 50 years and when I started you needed very few tools and could service your own bike if you had a bit of gumption. Bikes now are way more technical with electronics, multiple standards and hydraulics and as these videos show it’s case of do your homework and buyer beware.

I'm always impressed to see all the work required to fix a top level bike. Makes me wonder what it is for 3000euros bikes which is already a lot of money... Maybe that's the limit of industrial production and high level mechanics are always necessary.

Very well done, guys. The reality is that there are VERY few shops with the technical expertise to deal with close tolerance fits. Roundness, concentricity, cylindricity... I'm not sure I'd even trust an ID micrometer at these levels of resolution. You might want to upgrade to a Sunnen-type bore gage and compare to a master ring gage. You'd benefit from increased accuracy as well as being able to check a much larger area of each bore in a few seconds rather than take multiple mic readings. I'd mention air gaging, but a set of dial bore micrometers and a couple standards--or a gage block stack--would cover more sizes and allow for headtube comparisons as well.
@Mapdec
@Mapdec 10 ай бұрын
We do have a bore micrometer. I think I showed it for final result. The internal gives me an idea of roundness and how each side differs. I did a video once on hand sanding one side a certain direction to get alignment

Cannondale never should have gotten into powersports as this division is sinking the entire company. They had a strong bicycle company and cyclists don't care about petrol dirtbikes and quads. Top-down failure by company executives who probably have golden parachutes to fall back on.

Unfortunately I think it is fairly common for the marketing and design folk to basically be one and the same. The engineering to incorporate 'innovations' like hidden seat binders clearly lags far behind the ability to engineer and manufacture the solution. The major manufacturers have had forever just to make BB holes round, aligned and the right size in line with their own standards and haven't managed that. Cervelo have exactly the same sort of issues with seat post and clamp assemblies, integrated seat binders and worst of the worst the S3 disc fork assembly that fundamentally relied on carbon paste to hold the steerer quill inside the stem. All innovations that the 'engineers' can't engineer and the factory can't make at the cost the brand demands. It's depressing when a 5-figure priced bike is held together with teflon tape and a prayer.

Did something change or is Camnondale really just a brand name owned by a holdings company (PON)? I was surprised to see they also own Santa Cruz bikes. I really have to wonder how important the reputation of a "historic" bike brand really is to a gigantic holdings company. Glad to see you got it sorted in some fashion.
What does it mean to give your bike a 'Full Service'?
