I love new types of content like this. Also the best aftercare tips I've heard, putting the newly collected tree directly on the ground for the ground heat and allowing the soil to really dry out that first time. That was a aha moment for me and eye opening. Good stuff.👏👍

Very interesting. I have to say though, using an ax to cut roots is not too effective, especially for the medium diameter boots. The problem is when you hit the root, it will move and you'll lose energy in the process. I would recommend using a much larger reciprocating saw, like the Milwaukee Sawzall.

What is your vision for this HUGE bonsai? I can only imagine you are challenging yourself. And, as we gaze into the 🔮there appear larger electric tools and bits and saws…and…wait…an electric hammer is coming into focus too! Thank you so much for this video mega-bonsai project. Looking forward to updates and the tree’s progress. Best to Mari. Did she OK this project?

Hi Jerome and Mari. Loved the video. Just a few follow ups on building the grow box. - As a general rule how large do you make a grow box? Is there a general guideline for the goal size of the tree. How about depth? - Did you leave small gaps in the bottom slats? Or are they flush with each-other? - After repotting into the grow box, would you leave the tree (maple in my case) in a shaded spot for a few weeks? Or is it safe to give it sun and fertilizer as you normally would ? Thanks again! Can’t wait to see how this behemoth of a tree begins to take shape. Does it have a name?
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply2 жыл бұрын
Hey John! I try to make the box twice to three times as big as a regular bonsai pot would be. Depth you want to make sure you pot the tree to the bottom of the pot and have enough space to cover the surface roots. The slats are flush but you could leave small gabs, wouldn’t really matter as long as the soil stays in the box. I put it in my greenhouse in full sun it needs lots of heat after repotting. I fertilize when the first flush has hardened

I have a really nice stinkwood tree that I am planning to harvest soon. It would be my first tree that I am harvesting and it is a time sensitive case so it can't wait any longer to be removed. I live in South Africa, so it is approaching spring with temperatures getting warmer. The tree seems to have about 6 major roots. I am not sure how to go about this and don't want to do something stupid that would cost me the tree unnecessarily. I don't see too many feeder roots around the trunk. Is there anything you could suggest to help this happen more successfully. The tree has some buds starting.
@iPheek2 жыл бұрын
I collected a red oak but didn’t cut down the upper branch system like you did. When would be a good time to cut down those branches? It’s leafing out already and looking healthy!
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply2 жыл бұрын
I would wait until the first flush of the year has hardened and then chase the foliage.
@caitlinsavage93632 жыл бұрын
My mind is blown that you can take a full grown tree from the earth and turn it into a bonsai with precise care and attention. Do you have any trees in your collection that you have collected in a similar way to this one so we can see what it is like a few years into its bonsai life?
@murray8212 жыл бұрын
Nice trunk! Are those holes you drilled big enough? I have some wooden boxes, and I noticed the holes close up due to moisture. Even leaving 1cm spaces between the boards will eventually close.
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply2 жыл бұрын
I think they are but the space in between the slats are probably helping with the drainage a little bit too. I get what you are saying though, they may have been a bit too small.
@murray8212 жыл бұрын

Great Video Jerome, looking forward to seeing how the tree evolves, I must say your wood working skills need a little bit of working on, if I may be so bold , a circular saw would of helped a lot and the box could have been made before you placed the tree in it . Not criticism just an observation. I do like the way you present and we in the UK have some fantastic on line Bonsai teachers ,but you have developed style
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Tim! I put the tree on the bottom on purpose to build the box around the tree, I figured that once the box was built it would be harder for me to lift it over the rim of the pot. I'm pretty sure you are right about the saw, I build a box once, maybe twice a year so I just use what I have. :) I appreciate your feedback and your kind words!
