I agree, I think the kits sounds great at all tuning ranges and dynamic ranges. This may be related to an aural illusion, but it was interesting to hear drums sing out in the lower velocity hits, then hearing the head attack dominate in the higher velocity hits (I think I noticed the difference in the softer/lower velocity hits more in one of the earlier videos and it's stuck with me).

I think I like the medium and high tunings about equally. The low sounds good but also but doesn't hit the same for me. Lower tuned drums can get lost in a mix, too, in comparison to higher tuned ones. Thanks for sharing this. It's a really interesting comparison.

You bet brother, after Jim came out and I could hear the range of this thing I knew I had to. Mid is what I've done forever on IROC so going outside of comfort range for me is a little intimidating :)
@TomCawoski5 ай бұрын
Nice work Jeff!!! Then toms sound great in all three tuning ranges. If I was to pick, it would be the high tuning. I'm not a fan of the super low thuddy tom sound but you didn't really go that low. When you're too low, you can't really distinguish the different tom pitches in the context of a full band mix. If you go into an even higher range than your high tuning, then you're getting into the jazz tuning which is a whole other animal. The medium & high ranges would probably work for a lot of different genre. Dave Weckl is pretty close to your high F C A F C although he doesn't have a 13 on his usual kit. Did you get any recommendations from your tech buddy Jim? What it really comes down to is what style of music do you normally play and which tuning fits that style of music the best. Very cool demo!!!
@JeffWald5 ай бұрын
Thanx Tom! He didn't show me much that I didn't know already but I've never felt that I'm good at tuning low so watching him do the 12" like he did it was like "oh!!!!, I get it!". The DCP video they did 2 yrs ago with this (minus the 10 & 13, they weren't ordered til the guy I bought it from ordered them) and they had it tuned high with the stock coated (which I recorded b4 putting these on) and it sounded great too. Different than what I'm used to but I may screw around w/ that too. Thanx for checking it out brother!

I can see why drummers are falling in love with these Pearl maple/gum shells. They sound phenomenal at all ranges. They seem to have a lot of attack. I’m curious what your thoughts are on the 60 degree edges vs a common sharp 45? Is there a lot of difference in the attack or is it mostly to increase tuning ranges on these drums?
@JeffWald2 ай бұрын
hey man, honestly I'm not sure how the 60 vs 45 is affecting it. I've had both (MRX that had sharp 45s) and both sounded great but I don't know how much of that was the edges vs shells, thickness, heads... ya know? The red MW (that I still have!) is rounded 45s and also sounds great. My opinion is that with the right tuning you can go wrong w/ any of them
@ghiblinerd61964 ай бұрын
The kit sounds amazing. It seems to sound richer and fuller the lower you tuned it. I’m just have a feeling that it’s not great sounding because of the wood combination alone. As an amateur builder I have yet to be convinced that wood species makes that much of a difference. Shell mass, geometry, head and rim choices along with tuning, muffling and the room they’re pkk ok sure in make the most difference imo
@JeffWald4 ай бұрын
It's something that I've wondered. I just put the red one back up last night and set the blue up in front of it to get hardware ready for an upcoming gig. So I was able to go back & forth and really A/B them and will do more. The biggest difference with identical heads, tuning, hardware, no muffling & sizes on both --- the shell mass. Red is thick - 7.5mm and up to 12.5mm on the kicks. Blue is 5.4 all the way around. Red was slightly louder and a little more pronounced while blue had a slightly rounder sound. So that's been fun to screw around with and I'll probably put parts of each up together and test & video that
Jeff who manufactured that stealth rack and what are the parts used to get this look because I love it because it really shows off the drums

Hey Matthew, its a Pearl rack (prob 10yrs old) and I had it powder coated in 2016 - like even the memory locks. Its not black, its a deep dark brown which goes nicely when I have the red/gold kit up and looks almost like black nickel with the blue kit on it. But yeah - all Pearl

Jeff, what heads did you use? Also with tuning notes, t & b are top and bottom right. What does the F stand for? And where are the bass drum tunings?
@JeffWald5 ай бұрын
Those are Aquarian classic clears. I haven't marked the kick settings but the batter side is pretty low & the front is low but produces a tone when tapped. F = fundamental. Just the main note or frequency that the top & bottom produce together
