Blues fan here. I think Berube's navigation of the 2019 playoffs as coach was key to the Blues winning it all. He knew the locker room, and he moved those guys perfectly. After the refs GIFTED the Sharks a win in round 3 (handpass assist on an OT game winner), he closed the locker room and basically told the guys to shut their mouths and make no excuses. No complaints about the refs from the guys that night, and they won the next three against the Sharks, shutting them up thoroughly. I'd seen so many versions of the Blues quit in those kinds of moments in playoffs past, where there was going to be an excuse they could use. Berube wouldn't let them grab hold of that excuse, though. It was the moment where I actually, finally, for the first time in my life, thought a cup was possible. Search for a KZbin video called "Blues React To Blown Call In Overtime That Led To Sharks Goal" to see the coach and players' immediate insistence on turning the page. I loved Berube during his time here, and I hope he helps the Leafs figure it out, too.

The moment St.Louis let him go this past winter I was like…Oh sweet Jesus bring him here. He took that last place team in January made next to no moving players out and won that cup that season! He’s got to be that guy who made that happen. Huge respect for this guy and he said a month ago long before Keefe was let go, it would be an honour to coach the Toronto maple leafs

Blues fan here, everyone thinks it was just Binnington that lifted the Blues to the cup (he was a huge piece) but what was the spark was the Blues had a 18 game stretch in January/February where we played 14 road games and the 4 home games were 1 nighters. We went 14-3-1 (11 game win streak). Team bonded on the road and our cup run we had more road wins then home wins. Chief rolls 4 lines and holds everyone accountable. Isn't like Torts at all with the press but you'll know who he's talking about not pulling their weight.

I think there is a big misconception about Berube. As a Blues fan he's not really an in your face type coach. He's not like a Torterella or anything. He may sit some guys and hold them accountable but he's known as a players coach. He does have a different style of play that most Leafs players are use to so we'll see how that goes.

Berube praised each of the core 4 by name except Tavares. Hes confident he can get enough with the 11 million that the d and goalie problems should be fixable. It’s not fair to Leafs fans that Berube’s Year 1 will be a honeymoon (a wasted year) because Tavares is untradable and Marner will likely refuse a trade, but is allowed to play out the season and become a free agent without compensation just like Johnny Gaudreau. As a result, this Core-4 plus Rielly team will be ousted in Round 1 of the playoffs by the Bruins/Panthers again.

I disagree. I don't think you can have this Leafs team win the same way it won in the regular season. That's the problem. They practice this perimeter, skill-based game so much that by the time they get to the playoffs, it took them FIVE games to finally get it through their thick skulls to adjust for the playoffs, which was too late. You need to do what Paul Maurice did and have the Leafs play the right way all day, every day. You need to break the bad habits, and there's no better time to do that than during the 82 games before the playoffs.

@@johnsummerhill8323 I know, but he changed how Florida played when he was their coach, and what I'm saying is that the Leafs need to do the same thing. Two years ago, back when they had Huberdeau and Weegar, they used to be like Toronto. That's why they got swept. Paul Maurice changed how that team played, and the transition almost cost them from making the playoffs. But it clicked at the right time, which is why they made the playoffs, beat Boston and went on a run. And they are doing it again this year. The leafs need to do the same thing - change the systems for 82 games. We don't need a playoff coach, we need a year-round coach.

I am reserving my enthusiasm for this new coach simply because I have gone through this before so many times. I remember varying degrees of being elated when Pat Quinn, Randy Carlyle and Mike Babcock to name just a few were all hired. Same when Brian Burke took over as GM, I remember thinking "Okay, this is it, this is what they need." The one thing I must concede however, is that a coaching change was needed. Craig Berube looks like the best choice but we will see.

Holl was a top 4 here. Didnt mean much. Who we want and who wants us? I think Zadorov and Pesche will be targeted. So will Montour but by everyone. Tanev could be a possibility if some get signed by other teams. Lets remember Trudeau has made Canada a very undesirable place to move to, especially tax wise.

I think what we are yet to see, more than just have Berube as the coach, is how much change on the ice will we see this off season? In past years, the media availability it seemed like Shanny was on his high horse with an untouchable attitude or outlook. This years availability, he seemed timid and looked liked he was just told that this is his mess.. this is up to him to fix this or he is gone. Looks like he was told he has this off season to prove he wants to put a winning team on the ice or he is gone. Seems like he's been put on an extremely short leash and it showed.

Barube won a Cup in 2019. Well, Binnington is the guy who Won the Cup. Last place at Christmas, into the playoffs and a Cup win. Show me a Great Goalie and I’ll show you a Great Coach. We would have won back to back Cups in St Louis if not for Covid. We fired Berube not because he is a bad coach Everyone From the owner to General Manager & most of the players still Love him. Our Stanley Cup window just closed. He cannot take young players & develop a cup team. But he will let you know where the problems lie. You have enough talent in Toronto but it will take a few changes that Berube wants. Get ready to play heavy & Forecheck but most importantly you have to Backcheck. No skating around waiting for the Puck, You have to take it. Good luck Toronto. Berube will Never Ever be forgotten here in St Louis. Cant wait until you come to town. This is not going to work well with the star purse wearing softies on this team, Berube is a old school hard nose coach that will rip these guys and their stars won't like it. He's very similar to Babcock. So Berube won a Cup, Sure but on the back of a very good D and a decent goalie that got red hot at the right time. Berube's had 5 playoff appearances and went out in the first round 3 times and the 2 round once in the 5 playoffs. His playoff winning is .494. Here is an interesting stat too, Only 1 head coach in the last 78 years has won a Cup with one team and then went on to win a Cup with another team as a hrad coach, 1 time thats happened in 78 years and that was done by a coach the is on a different level then any other coach ever, Scotty Bowman. Statistically meaning that if you hire a coach that's won a Cup with another team your chance of winning a Cup are pretty much none.
