Keller is 3,753,000 less cap hit than Marner. Again more pieces would have to be included to balance things out, but just looking at those 2 as the mains and the savings it brings

I absolutely agree about Samsonov and Woll and Seth Jones. I also agree with buying out Tavares and checking to see if Marner would like to remove the no trade clause. I really believe that the pressure of Leafs Nation is wearing on him.

There are questions about players staying,: Marner, Samsanov, Tavares,, Brodie, etc. Then there are questions about coaching and management, i.e. Keefe and Shanahan. There likely are changes in the near future for Toronto , but I still see Toronto, after any changes, as being at best a very good tier 2 team in the EC.

Salary caps can go up, but what we pay specific positions and roles on the team should be fixed at a certain percentage of that salary cap and we need to exercise those percentages in intelligent ways. We cannot allocate such a high percentage of any salary cap to a core 4. It completely handcuffs us elsewhere (blue line, goalie etc) - not just for 1 season, but for the next 3-5 seasons to come and that is not what a playoff winning team needs. When we look at what Marner gets paid compared to the likes of Tcachuk, Kucherov..even Pasternak and that Rielly gets paid 6x what Benoit gets paid and 3x what Lyubushkin or Edmundson gets paid - that is just not a winning formula to bring in playoff winning players when your core 4 (who take up such a high percentage of the salary cap) do not perform in playoff hockey.

Another option would be try to get Marner & Rielly to Utah for Crowse & Ingram with some picks. I think that would work nicely for both teams because we can pick up some free agents to fill some positions, like Durzi, Skjei, Hronek or DiMelo. Gotta bring in some guys who have had success & can be used in specific roles (like the POWER PLAY) and let your top-tier guys do their thing. So much to figure out though, and if all else fails, this core will stay the same for one more year, possibly under Keefe & then the doors will be blown right off in 2025.

The Leafs could easily just sit Marner or essentially make his life hell until he waives his NMC, no chance he'd be willing to go through that for a whole season. The NMC is more so regarding where he's traded, too, as opposed to not wanting to leave Toronto at all.

No shannahan needed to be gone at least 4 years ago. Keefe did good to last long as he did, but time for a fresh start somewhere else to keep evolving as a good NHL coach. Marner and samsonov will benefit from places with less pressure than Toronto.

IF, IF Marner agrees to waive the Leafs won’t get much back. To move Tavares will cost the Leafs a prospect and or a draft pick. The cap space, if used wisely, may compensate for the lack of return.

At this point, it’s pretty much a waiting game for Tavares’ contract to get off the books. Scary to think that he’s probably going to be worse next year as well.

Reilly has NM clause he's not going anywhere. Tavares you have to eat for this year. Marner is a baby, he'd rather sit and pout than be traded. You got to clean house on the lower end. Kampf has to go Dewar is cheaper and the same player. Jarnkrok has to go as does Lileegrin

The Leafs should announce to other GM's in the league that EVERYONE on the Leaf roster is available for trade and sit back and wait for the offers. What should anyone expect in return for say - Matthews? Doesn't hurt to listen to offers. Management doesn't have to make any deals that won't make the team better. Is it just a matter of coaching? Then go and get another coach. The team that is currently assembled will NOT go past the first round thanks to the previous mistakes made with mismangement of salaries. To get good players back in return, the Leafs are going to have to offer some quality to other teams. It is safe to say that this current edition of the Leafs with the so called core 4 is simply not good enough to advance deep in the playoffs! If the goal is winning the Stanley Cup, some kind of grand inpirational plan is needed to change the makeup of this team. I saw a lot of hopeful signs that can still be built upon but it's going to take some imagination from upper management to do this! You could also blow it all up and start all over again early while the team still has assets other teams would be interested in acquiring. Or a 10 player blockbuster in an attempt to retool - those days are probably gone!

I would re-sign Marner for $7-8M. Pay off Taveres his $11M qnd re-sign him to a 2 year $2M contract for 3rd line centre. Fire Keefe even though I like him. Sammy trade, Woll needs better workout regiment to stay healthy. Nylander, Matthews, Knies, Domi and Bretuzi are Superstars KEEP THEM ALL.

Unfortunately, as much as Leafs fans might not like to hear it, the chances of Mitch Marner getting traded are almost 0. Between the NMC (thanks Kyle Dubas) and the difficulty of winning a trade that involves a player like Marner….. Very unlikely he’s going anywhere.

It's about time he does. Because he probably prevented drastic moves by the GM to make this team a playoff success. That said, I also blame Dubas for giving away all the draft picks for useless rentals excluding last year's guys. He should have kept Hyman, Shenn, O'Reilly etc., If we had Luke Shenn and O'Reilly this year with a Matthews & Nylander at 100% along with Domi and Brituzi, they would have wiped the Bruins in 5 or 6 games.

Cap space is the major asset. There is virtually no cap space saved with a Tavares buyout. Leafs have to gut it up and tell Marner they aren’t resigning him, that’s their only leverage

OR re-sign Marner to a $7-$8M multi year contract. But that's it. He's not worth anywhere above $8M due to playoff production. And use the remaining salary cap to obtain somebody else that can help elevate the Core guys. Not sure what happened to Morgan this year but he was missing in action. Jake McCabe was a superstar in the Post Season. Reminds me of Jake Muzzin.

@@nickt6595 The mix doesn’t work. Resigning Marner compounds the known error regardless of the amount. Trading him (if they can) should return at least 1 useful piece plus a boatload of cap relief. Letting him walk might hurt but they can have 2 very good players for that $10.8 m. Toronto ain’t Winnipeg or Calgary - there will always be guys who want to play there

Keefe has poorly coached this team for a very long time. He overvalued Jarnkrok and Holmberg way too much. Their numbers are horrible yet they play big minutes in important positions. Holmberg is barely an nhl player, a strong breeze knocks him off the puck. Jarnkroks shooting percentage is awful or he puts in right on the goalies number's. Let him just play the penalty kill if need be. Now take a player like Robertson who produces more on less minutes. And we reward him by either sending him down or lampooning him on a 4th line. He may not kill the penalty but the leafs have plenty of players to fill that role. Early in the series, samsonov was getting beat easily and not able to even spot the play, yet it took a last ditch effort to put woll in. During the season, we lost every overtime that kampf started. His line pairings don't match north vs south skaters vs lateral skaters. The list goes on and on.

The first steps needed are fire Shanahan, fire the ENTIRE coaching staff, have your new guy bring his own team in. Figure out how to release Marner & Tavares from their last year's contract & I agree with you, Andrew, bring Cowan & Minten AND Webber in the mix. Dump the UFA's, all of them except Bertuzzi & Domi, they should stay. Yes. Give them a 4 or 5 year deal worth 6 & 4 AAV respectively. Woll can be your 2/3 combo & Jones should be resigned as your 2/3 option as well, because Woll's health can not be trusted. Find a good #1 & my thoughts are either a Rittich or Stolarz as your #1. Hildeby might need one more season in the AHL before he's brought up.
