Leafs need to sacrifice this year and next, make appropriate seller moves, invest in their youth and restructure around their core with that youth. The core is young enough that they can kill two seasons, relieve themselves from JT’s contract and reset for a surge in 2025-26.

When you’re paying your top4 that amount of $ there is no taking any years off. Their window is now (was last year, actually). Tavares’ savings in 2 years will just end up being swallowed by Marner. They are in a doom loop

Treliving will do more this offseason, he was an unexpected last minute hire when Dubas cried his way out of town. There are no trades to be made yet...hopefully he doesn't waste more assets on old UFA's like the last guy.

I dont care what anyone says Parayko is a good fit. His contract at 6.5 aav wont matter now that the cap is going up. The 6'6 230 lbs right shot dman who has played with Rielly once before is exactly what this Leaf team needs. This fan base has been screaming for a big right shot dman, this is him. He has the size, speed and mean streak to keep up with the top six. Logs big mins that would compliment Rielly nicely. Would love tanev but would likely have to wait to the summer to get him. If we could get both to start next season, even better. But right now he just is to injury prone.

Leafs have no assets to make a move. They aren't trading Knies, Cowan or Minten in the forward group. They love Hildeby and aren't moving him. Bert, Domi, Gio and Brodie shouldn't be back. If Cowan and Minten are able to make the team next season you move out Jarnkrok and Kampf. Holmberg can take the role of Kampf as 4th line center. Minten and Cowan as wingers on the 3rd line with a gritty center. Knies-Matthew-Marner are the topline and ?-JT-Nylander as your second line. Defense needs 2 big physical guys on defense, that's it. Rielly-? ?-Liljegren Benoit-McCabe.

Just because a NMC is negotiated into a contract doesn’t mean the player can’t be asked to waive it, if it would make sense for them. Not to mention, and I know it sounds shitty, but it’s possible for an employer to make it clear that an individual is not in the future plans of an organization or to make an employee know that they’re not satisfied with their role on a team

I’ve been a leafs fan all my life. This is NOT the year to push your chips in for a cup. Out of the seasons in the Matthews era, this is the least complete roster. JT play has fallen off a cliff, Marner production and performance noticeably down. Defense is as bad as I’ve seen it since before Muzzin joined. There’s NO evidence this season to suggest this is a year to trade away a bunch of players under 25 (Robertson, Liljgren, Minten, etc.) who haven’t hit their ceiling. How many bad trades/players that we give up on too early (Moore, Durzi, Marchment, etc) do we have to watch become important somewhere else to realize that it’s a rookie GM mistake to think every year is a year to go all in?

They’re not going to go “all in” where they’re trading Minton and Cowan and their picks, but you also don’t throw in the towel with Matthews having the season he is having, and Willy fresh off an 8 year signing.

@@c_telking4433 that’s what we say every year Matthews and Marner are here. “Matthews is on pace for 60!” Or “Marner on pace for 100pts!”. - gotta trade some firsts and guys that won’t matter to our roster because we’re trying to win now… meanwhile these prospects a couple years back like Moore, Durzi, Marchment are all full time contributors on other rosters and we have nothing to show from those trades. Anyway, point of the post was to say maybe this group for once needs to develop an ability to pull themselves over the edge rather than relying on their GM to pick up some leadership at deadline (Foligno, ROR, Schenn, etc.) that won’t resign in off season anyway. Individual markers shouldn’t be your benchmark for deciding whether to acquire players in exchange for assets, especially when those assets could likely pan out under a coach who simply knows how to balance player development, implementing a style of play while being competitive. Keefe just coaches every game as if it’s a must-win by leaning on Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Rielly, way too heavily and criticizes the depth/role players for not contributing much meanwhile the likes of Domi or Robertson are on better point production pace per 60 minutes than our captain Tavares. If they do nothing (no buying nor selling) and still can’t pull it together on their own this season, then maybe that’s all the indication management needs to say this roster isn’t built to be a cup contender and they can finally make significant roster moves in summer

Dubas is the reason they are in this position. He let key guys like kadri, Hyman, Andersen leave. He emptied the draft pick cupboard for rentals and trash players. Dubas completely destroyed this team, when Lou laimerallo built it

The Leafs had their chance to address blueline issues 5 years ago when they signed John Tavares. Huge mistake , they didn't need him , they needed defense just like now only now they are stuck with an over rated and over paid aging Tavares. Imagine that 11 million on the defensive end. Kyle Dubas made a mess of this team that will be felt for a few yrs to come. As for trades , good luck with that as they have little to offer except future prospects and draft picks and we all know how that turns out.

Who doesn't have questions/problems in the East? Given what the Leafs have gone through they are 6 points back of 2nd overall in their conference with a game in hand on FLA. How many points did we lose cause of poor goalie play only? I'm okay if the Leafs roll with this team and see what happens, expectations are low anyways. If they do go after someone like Tanev, than a Abrusse or a Steeves type player going back is acceptable, with a 3rd round pick (we don't got many picks). If it's going to cost a 1st or Cowan, Minten or Robertson than NO, ride with this team and re-tool next year. Maybe Woll and or Sammy go on a heater. Alot worse teams have made a run, maybe playoff Bertuzzi shows up and Domi is that playoff pest.

One article I read said perhaps use Liljgren as the centerpiece to get Hanifin and Tanev, if that's the case than I'd be okay with giving up more, our 1st this year and better prospects as I think both would strongly consider re-signing in the 6

Liljegren Giorsano are 7th defenceman. Brodie is a 3rd pairing D and I'd be ok with a McCabe Brodie 3rd pairing but the problem is we are still missing 2 RHD. Reilly ______ Benoit _______ McCabe Brodie

They have the 2nd half of this year and all of next year to get Niemala into the roster and PLAY him. Same with Robertson. Make an investment and PLAY him. Minted and Cowen are coming up soon. Make sure there is a pathway for them to join the roster when they are ready. STOP signing guys that aren’t a good fit jsut because there is money to spend in the offseason. Make purposeful signings. They have $4.5mil and need a D-Man so they sign Klingberg? Why? Because they had $4.5mil burning a hole in their pocket? If the right guy isn’t available, keep the money! use it in season. Domi for $3mil? Bertuzzi for $5+mil? So many stupid decisions based on having enough money to make stupid decisions.

Two guys that I would love for them to go after in the offseason (unless they get moved at the deadline) are Mario Ferraro and Will Borgen. Two guys that are still young and should be looked at to overhaul this blue line. Ferraro is a legit top 4 D on a bad sharks team. Has term on his deal too. So that would cost more. Could be something like Robertson, Liljegren/Timmins and a 1st for Ferraro and something extra. Will Borgen is a big kid, similar to Benoit at 6’3, 204lbs. Blocks shots, throws hits. Would probably take a 3rd and a good prospect to pry him away. Overall a top 4 amd d-core like this would be pretty solid: Reilly - Borgen Ferraro - McCabe Benoit - Niemala Kokkonen

Dubas literally ruined this team setting the standard for the overpayed core 4. Made more bad moves in his time here than he did good ones. Treliving dosent have thr assets to go out and do anything because Glasses sold them all to get to the 2nd round.

I don't fully agree with the narrative being pushed when comparing Triliving and Dubas. Both GMs had their good and bad signings - part of the business. I believe the Nylander contract extension is directly linked to the contracts Dubas negotiated for Marner and Matthews. Nylander fully believes he took a discount and that he is just as skilled as them, so he was determined to get what he feels was due to him. I also believe the MLSE board really influences how the GM does their job. Also, this year has been pretty bad so far due to Samsonov, Brodie, Kampf, and others not playing as well as they did last year. We need to be patient until the Tavares's contract expires and that will open up some possibilities in terms of spreading money around the line up.

I liked that Robertson for Boone Jenner rumor. Abruzzese & Liljegren for Tanev(-25%). Or Nylander&Brodiie for Oliver Bjorkstrand. Adam Larsson& Will Borgen. Fire Keefe and hire Berube. Dubas may have done a couple of these moves, he was learning from his mistakes and improving each year. BT has always been a bad GM, can't see that changing now...
