While it is great that they signed him, the reality is that next year, even with the cap raise the Leafs will now have even less of a percentage the salary to sign the rest of the team than they did this year. SO ... cap strapped this season and even more so next year. At some point these guys need to realize that 4 players aren't going to win them the Stanley cup. Especially when they sign free agents for dumb contracts and make terrible trade deadline deals that leave them scrambling in the off season.

What cap increase, they just spend it and went over it with extending Matthews and Nylander. This team is financially screwed to do anything to build a post season roaster. Enjoy the 1 and out for years to come. This team wont beat Boston, Florida, or a Tampa with a healthy Vasilesky in there division as constructed. God forbid Detriot, Buffalo, and Ottawa start tearing up the regular season in the next couple of seasons. The leafs will miss the playoffs altogether.

SO -- less percentage of money available to fill roster spots and fix issues. Imagine if each guy was making a million less per season. What could the Leafs do with $4 mil more to spend on defence or attract a solid goalie?

Glad its done,dont think leafs got bargain, but Willie picked the right time to have a career season, the main reason i dont like the huge contracts on the leafs is that they are all forwards, and i think personally thats not the right allocation of money...Leafs still dont have a stud D (Rielly is not a #1 D), and the goalie position makes me shudder in trepidition. The other part of this story is the leafs are 8 years into supposedly building a cup winning team....so far they have won ONE playoff round, tell me of another team that had the benefit of rebuilding with a lot of very high draft picks who took 7 seasons to win one series, most are making significant noise by year 4, and nothing the leafs have done this season makes me think it will be much different this playoff's

I love how they say that money is coming off the books. But what are they gonna replace them with? Players willing to play for gift cards or are they planning to dress 12 skaters every game? This argument makes zero sense. Yes you can replace those players with cheaper ones but you sure aren’t coming close to a cup with them if you haven’t been able to do it the last 5 years.

Its the other players that are going to see the writing on the wall with this contract. Muzzin is not back next years because he's finished as player. Brodie can now see he's not being resigned. Geo is done as well. Bertuzzi will not be back Probably Domi as well, Klingberg gone, Murray of the books and you'll either see Kampf or Jarncrok trade. Oh and Tavaras has one more year then its a massive cut in play, probably to about 3 million max. Then you have money to balance the team.

I can’t believe all the fans here that are okay with this signing!!! How many years now have we all complained about the core 4 taking up all the cap. Cap goes up a bit and the GM pays two contracts more than the cap goes up. This coming from a team already cap strapped and needing to now sign 9 players with 22 million next season. Keep doing what hasn’t worked and expect it too. What gets me is how many of you are okay with this.

so what happens is teams stacked with 5-7 million dollar forawrds at 15-20 goals and 4-5 million dollar defencemen win cups. The leafs blueprint is wrong. You watch LA this playoffs. Trevor Moore has 17 goals at 4.5 million for 4 years. Nylander has 21. that's a FOUR goal difference for an extra 6+ million (next year) The cap era is about value for money. The Leafs are now getting the SAME production out of AM and WN for an extra 7 million, the cap raise next year. The model is broken and the organisation are happy to pay stars to keep foolish fanboys happy.

But he is now being paid more than all of them at $11.5 a season. Mathematically speaking NYLANDER'S STATS say he's worth $8-9.5 million on ANY other team.

Sam, you need to adjust your expectations to the reality of playing in big markets (added pressure = added dollars) and a tax hell hole. If you want to start pointing fingers, don’t look at Matthews and Nylander. Look no further than Bettman who thinks a huge market with huge pressure in Toronto with high tax regulations vs a relatively small market in Arizona… or hell even a competitive team with a small market in Miami with the Panthers and little tax regulations should have the same cap constraints.. it makes less and less sense, especially with inflation. Everybody, including players, are worried about their purchasing power. Bettman is to blame

You don’t think Pastrnak agent had a strong idea of where the cap was going to be this offseason.it was the worst kept secret ever.
