This movie is a great example of why practical effects are better than CGI
@erikbjelke44119 ай бұрын
I don't automatically agree. For instance, the stop-motion shot. I get why Joe Dante prefers/believes that there's a "charm" to stop motion, but that scene is just OBVIOUSLY stop motion. CGI would do better at making the Gremlins believable in that case. Likewise, there are some seams (some literal) in the mass of Gremlins in the theater that CGI would have solved had it existed. But yeah, on the whole, having something present on set the actors can interact with form emotions with (love or terror) is superior. Farscape is a great example. Jim Henson company puppets bringing aliens like Rygel and Pilot to life, and the actors being able to physically interact with the puppets, the puppeteers being able to improv right alongside the actors, made a kind of magic. The first time Crichton hit Rygel, the bean-counters panicked because the puppet is expensive and breakable, the puppeteers were excited because physical interaction sells the reality of the creature.

The framework of this movie is a low-key parody of It's a Wonderful Life. Small, snow-covered town at Christmas... young main couple discovering their feelings for each other... there's even a mean, rich, trouble-making old jerk, just like Mr. Potter.

Billy's mother is a stone-cold bad-ass compared to him. That lady does NOT tolerate home invaders and I reckon she'd have cleaned up the town all on her lonesome lol. I love this movie for a number of reasons, but the WILD tonal shifts are part of the magic. In one scene you have Gizmo having his head bandaged, another has THAT story from Phoebe Cates. Gremlins is a totally rewatchable classic from a talented group of creators.

"Now I have another reason to hate Christmas." "What are you talking about?" "The worst thing that ever happened to me was on Christmas. Oh, God. It was so horrible. [✂] And that's how I found out there was no Santa Claus." Sweet Christ! 😳 Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Zach Galligan. Location Location Fact: The set for Kingston Falls is the same one used for Back to the Future (1985). Both movies were filmed on the Universal Studios backlot. PG-13 Rating Fact: This movie and Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (1984) are credited with inspiring the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating. Many felt the movies were too violent for a PG rating, but not violent enough for an R rating. Practical Security Fact: Zach Galligan recounted in an interview that when the movie was made, there was no CGI, so all of the Gremlins were animatronics, each costing between $30-40,000. When everyone left the lot for the day, security would have everyone open the trunks of their cars to make sure they weren't stolen. Mythology Fact: A gremlin is a mischievous folkloric creature invented at the beginning of the 20th century to originally explain malfunctions in aircraft, and later in other machinery, processes, and their operators. Depictions of these creatures vary widely. Stories about them and references to them as the causes of especially inexplicable technical and mental problems of pilots were especially popular during and after World War II. Christmas Nightmare Fact: The "Santa Speech" proved to be controversial and studio executives insisted upon its removal because they felt it was too ambiguous as to whether it was supposed to be funny or sad. Director Joe Dante however stubbornly refused to take the scene out saying it represented this movie as a whole, which had a combination of horrific and comedic elements. Executive producer Steven Spielberg did not like the scene, but despite his creative control, he viewed this movie as Dante's project and allowed him to leave it in. Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) would later hilariously lampoon this ridiculous speech, which I highly recommend.

In the commentary, Joe Dante talks about Kate's speech being a HUGE sticking point. The executives hated it, and demanded Dante cut it out. He refused, believing first that it was a big mistake to set up "Kate hates Christmas" and then never pay it off, but more that he felt the speech encapsulated the tone of the movie as a whole: on the face of it, it's ridiculous. "Your Dad was DUMB enough to try and ACTUALLY climb down the chimney like Santa Claus? WHILE holding a ton of presents? YOUR FATHER WAS AN IDIOT!" But if someone actually had that happen to them, was telling you that story face-to-face, you'd have to try and empathize with them, respect the tragedy and horror of it. Even Steven Spielberg wasn't a fan, but while he was a producer, he considered "Gremlins" Joe Dante's film, and if Joe insisted it stayed, Steven wasn't going to cut over his objections. Apparently, up until the film was loaded into projectors in movie theaters to start being shown, the studio was trying to get it cut, prepared to sent letters to all the theaters to physically cut the scene out of their prints.

The original Piranha from 1978; The Howling, a werewolf movie with the mom from E.T. ; a segment for 1983's Twilight Zone: The Movie; Innerspace; The Burbs, with Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher; Matinee; Small Soldiers and Loonet Tunes: Back In Action, a blend of live action and animation, with all the classic Looney Tunes characters and Brendan Fraser. His movies made my child and teen years amazing and wonderful.

Kate’s story about the death of her father is something the director refused to cut from the film. In a way it’s a perfect representation of the movie. It’s dark but also absurdly funny. If I was forced to pick an apocalyptic scenario for our world, I’d go with Gremlin outbreak. Our destruction would at least be hilarious and entertaining.

Here's some nerdy info dumping: 1. The term 'gremlins' comes from WWII era superstition/inside jokes that when the mechanical devices/planes etcl would malfunction/have bugs... They'd say it was the 'gremlins' that got into the planes etc (actually, it might mostly be an airforce thing) 2. The set is actually the exact same set for back to the future hill valley (the theater is the same one that the DeLorean crashes into, and the bank is where the Cafe is) 3. this movie is responsible for the "invention" of pg13 (before this, in the USA, there was only G, PG, R, and X)

This is how you make a 1980s children’s movie: make tons of cute creatures and then murder them in every horrible, disgusting way you can imagine. Oh! And don’t forget to break Santa’s neck and leave him stuffed in a chimney for a few days. In case they don’t get it, be sure to outright tell the audience, in no uncertain way, that Santa doesn’t exist! 😂 The 1980s kids’ movies made me the psychopath I am today 😂 It’s so messed up though! Part of Gizmo's cuteness is due to some cunning manipulation on behalf of the creature crew and director, Joe Dante. Many different designs were drafted in pre-production, and when they landed on a design they really liked, they colored that white-and-brown to match Steven Spielberg's dog, so that he would be predisposed to greenlight that design. 10:46: I LOVE the chemistry between Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates. Billy all nervous when he asks Kate out, Kate's restrained "God, TOOK you long enough!" as she says yes, his puppy-dog excitement after she says, then slamming back to trying to play cool and her little smile that says "Yeah, we both know you're a dork, but that's okay, that's why I like you."

Historical footnote: Gremlins had a fairly innocuous movie poster, so many parents thought it was a children's movie, and took their young children to see it in theaters. Many ended up carrying their children out of the theater crying because they were traumatized by the violence in it. Back then, though... you had G, PG, R and X for movie ratings (not all X rated movies were "adult" (pron) movies, some horror movies carried that rating due to the graphic violence). This movie was one of a couple that led to the creation of "PG-13" to bridge the gap between PG and R. The movie "Red Dawn" (1984) was the very first PG-13 rated movie. It's funny that you mentioned Gizmo looking like a Furby, as I still have my Furby "Gizmo" from the mid 1990s.

To answer a recurring question, yes, this is a horror-adventure film aimed at young teens. It's a slightly older version of shows like Goosebumps or Are You Afraid of the Dark? (though those came later). Not too scary for adult horror fans, but gross in a way that kids tend to like without being too explicit. You'll notice that all the human deaths happen in ludicrous ways where we don't see the body and there's no nudity or sexuality beyond nervously asking for a date and a fairly chaste kiss. By the way, since you like cheesy horror with little puppet creatures, Full Moon Features specialized in that. They were a super low budget, direct-to-video company back when you could survive based on the rental market. They're best known for the Puppet Master series, but I prefer Subspecies. My favourite murderous tiny creature series, though, are Ghoulies and Critters.

The original screenplay was much darker, but it was being passed around a lot and people weren't sure what to do with it. Spielberg was called in for ideas, which is how he got involved. It was his idea to keep Gizmo cute, and to add more comedic elements into the film. Steven Spielberg even has a cameo in the film, it's very brief though. This film is the reason why we have the PG-13 rating. There had been other films before that showed the need for a new rating, but this was the final push for it to be created. Before this film there was G, PG, R, and then the adult ratings. The ad campaign for this film only ever showed Gizmo, so parents assumed this was just a family friendly kids film with a cute critter in it. They had no idea what was waiting in the rest of the movie. So tons of parents took their children to see this film, and had to deal with the nightmares that resulted in seeing it. Hoards of angry parents called theaters, and this anger was passed on to the MPAA, which handles the rating of films in the US. The rating PG-13 was created for films that are too much for a younger child to see, since before then it was just PG, leaving that up for Parental Guidance if a child could see it or not, but with advertisements for films starting to be more cryptic and subtle, parents didn't really know if a film was safe for a young child to see anymore.

oooh wow! Yeah, I can imagine parents were very surprised. Some of those deaths were pretty outrageous! Haha

The idea for this Gremlins came from a Twilight Zone episode where Will Shatner is on a plane and claims there is a gremlin on the wing but no one else sees it except him.

When my mum's cat had babies, one of them looked exactly like Gizmo. She'll be 16 in april but she'll always be my baby Gizmo. And yes, when she's being naughty I do warn her with a "Gizmo Kaka"😻

I loved this film when I was younger. The way the score slowly evolved into the main theme throughout, and Billy's Mom is a badass in the kitchen! Great reaction guys 👍

"Awww, what a cute little town!" Me - "...let's destroy it!" Haha! This was a big, important movie to people of a certain age (hi 👋🙂). But in my whole life, I've always been quite content not watching the 2nd one. That said, maybe I'll give it a go, with you. Hah. Great job!

the genius of this movie and the sequel is unmatched in modern cinema. you got a mythical fairy tail monster that was "created" in WW2 as a means to explain away air plan malfuntions (gremlin) WHo springs from a furry creature that is named froma chinese word that means Devil or demon (mogwai). in the first movie you got a dad that is an inventor , use can't amke one invention that works for very long , all his inventions break down in relatively short order... adn here he is giving his son a present litterlaly breaks down in very short order , to create a plauge of the aformentioned monsters. in the 2nd the seting is in a ultra furturistic offic building where nothing manages to work ever.

You should see the sequel much more funny and less dark but not a christmas movie. Fun fact the actor Billy creep boss who liked Billy girlfriend Kate played with her (The actress) in another movie "Fast time in Richmond High" 2 years before where he was "Simping" about her if you know what I mean in a very famous memorable scene from the 80s :) . which made the actress a star. :). Another fun fact Kizmo was supposed to be Stripe but they decided to keep them separate even the mother was suppose to beheaded.

For an unconventional Christmas movie, I HIGHLY recommend 'Night of the Comet' from 1984. It's a well done 'B' movie with an underappreciated soundtrack and I think you'll enjoy it. Cheers.
