One thing that's not obvious is thatJack Burton is actually the sidekick as mentioned by John Carpenter. Also the warehouse if you recognize it is the Ghostbusters Firehouse “He’s definitely unique, there’s no doubt about that,” Carpenter says. “Jack is a character who doesn’t know he’s a sidekick. He thinks he’s the hero of the story but he’s not. He’s a sidekick.”

@happyninja424 ай бұрын
While this movie is filled with great lines, I think one of my favorites, is a very quick one, that is more telling about the moral character of Jack than I think most realize. It's early on, after Miao Yen has been kidnapped, and they're driving in the truck, and Wang tells Jack where they took her. You can see Wang begin to ask Jack if he would help him get her back, saying something like "I know I can't ask this of you" or some similar line you'd get in an action flick, when one action guy is asking another action guy to go out of his way to help. But Jack doesn't even let him finish the sentence. He just cuts him off "Where is it?!" no questioning, no hesitation. Assholes kidnapped a girl, and it also happens to be the girl of a close friend of his, he's just not gonna let that stand. You don't have to ask for Jack's help in this, you have it, literally without question. Another great line is at the end, when Jack is leaving, and he's shaking Wang's hand, and he very quietly, humbly, just asks "We really shook the pillars of heaven didn't we Wang?" and he just smiles and says "No horseshit jack." Which sounds like just a callback to the line from before, but given the mythology they were dealing with, it's also 100% true. They took on, literal beings of creation and destruction in Chinese mythology, or at least comparative beings with the serial numbers filed off. A handful of mortal warriors, storming the fortress of an immortal necromancer and his lieutenants to stop a demonic sacrifice, and Save the Princess. Comedy beats aside, they did some epic shit. I also loved pretty much EVERY word uttered by Egg Shen 🤣 I love Egg Shen

It's cheesy but the toast is great, it shows that no matter how much of their culture the residents of Chinatown have held on to they are Americans. It taught me a lesson as a kid and after everything that happened with Covid it's something important to remember.

Victor Wong (Egg Shen) had to travel down to Hollywood to film the movie's prologue right after attending the wake for his son, Lyon, who had been killed by a high school football player who shouted anti-Asian and homophobic slurs at Lyon and his friends before running up behind Lyon, who tried to walk away, and striking him in the head, knocking him to the ground and fracturing his skull. When the Wong family was told that the killer would get a light sentence because he was a juvenile, they inquired whether the killing could be prosecuted as a hate crime (because the killer shouted r@ci$t and homophobic insults before attacking) so the killer could be tried as an adult, but they were told that, because the killer was a minority, it couldn't be a hate crime. The killer ended up serving just 6 months for killing Lyon.

Thats so beyond sad. Question: id always thought hate crime laws werent until the 90s or so.
@waterbeauty854 ай бұрын
@@joshfacio9379 I don't know enough on the subject to give a definitive response, but I know for a fact that crimes committed against someone based on their sexual orientation were added to California's hate crime statute in 1984, so the basic hate crime statute had to have existed before then. BTW what's even sadder is that channel 7 (the local ABC affiliate) was going to run a story about Lyon's death and the miscarriage of justice in its "7 on Your Side" advocacy segment on its news broadcast to gain public support for the Wong family's case, but it was cancelled to give more time to coverage of the Challenger space shuttle disaster. Also, Victor suffered the first of two strokes after filming the movie's prologue, and some people believe the grief and stress surrounding Lyon's death may have been a contributing factor. Coincidentally, I had a stroke last month, and I'm still sweating over whether I'll ever walk again, so it hits way differently from when a friend who knew Victor from the Asian American Theater Company took me to see "Big Trouble in Little China" when it premiered in San Francisco and first told me about what happened to Victor and his family as we waited for the movie to start.

He died of a heart attack at some point during the early hours of September 12, 2001. He was 74.

At 37:49, SO Basically, this movie runs on a similar vein to Percy Jackson. In P.J, the Greek Gods and all of Greek mythology had migrated into America, taking on new identities, but basically picking right up where they left off. So in this movie, you've basically got several thousands of years of Chinese Demonology, sorcerers, immortal Madmen and monsters and magic, all living behind the fecade of a local hang war with two rival gangs in San Francisco China Town. The three Storms are exactly what you thought. They're basically sorcerers. Think of them as human vessels that contain their very namesake, leashed within. So when Thunder realizes his boss is dead. The boss that he's either been serving or enslaved to for several thousands of years. It's not just that his boss is dead. It's that he failed. Either that, or now that he knows Lol Pan is dead, Lo Pan's construct i.e. Thunder's human body, begins to fall apart. Either way, he can't leash the thunder within any more and explodes. The more you study Chinese Demonology, the more it makes sense. But since the main character is a clueless American, your confusion is also logical. 😂

You will love "Ghost of Mars" by John Carpenter.

For me, the Holy Trinity of John Carpenter is Halloween, The Thing....and this film. Big Trouble in Little China is one of the most joyously imaginative, fun and crazy movies ever made, and your reaction was an absolute delight to watch!

8:27 This movie was one of the inspirations for Mortal Kombat, along with "Blood Sport," and "Enter the Dragon."

Absolute gold for me, love this movie and all the cheesiness from the 80’s that comes along with it. One of the things i love about this that I heard, is the Jack Burton character asks all the questions that the audience is thinking . Another great Kurt Russell movie is a quirky one Captain Ron, comedy, as well as the Christmas Chronicles. So glad you guys reacted to this and had such a fun time watching. You talked about a video game but there is a pretty amazing board game that is very thematic. It’s currently out of print and the copies you can still find are pricey but worth it in my opinion.

Great reaction! I've often described it to my fellow film fans as "..what Mars Attacks did for y'all that love '50s Sci-Fi, this one does for us who love old Hong Kong 'Kung Fu' movies." I knew I was going to love "Kill BIll" when Tarentino threw up the old Shaw Bros. logo in the opening production logo sequence. Those things were what my local TV station used to throw up at night (I was a teen in the 1970s) before those insipid 'infomercials' were invented. "Ol' Jack Burton says you need dim sum. Little balls of protein and carbs that keep ya goin' through the night."

In case no one else has mentioned it, Kurt Russell does an amazing job in the movie Soldier from 1998. Also, his son Wyatt plays a younger version of Kurt’s character in the movie.

John Carpenter and Kurt Russell: Escape From New York. And if no one has mentioned it... John Carpenter does all his own music for his movies.

It takes a special kind of movie to make just saying the word "Indeed!" quotable, but having James Hong in it certainly helps

Thanks for reacting to one of my childhood favourites. Endless fun and entertainment. Complete the Carpenter/Russell filmography with Escape From New York and Escape From LA. Another Kurt Russell classic is Breakdown - one of my favourite edge of your seat thrillers!!

Also since you mentioned you liked the score, Carpenter always does his own music scores in his movies, very multi talented gentlemen.
