I'm so old, I actually participated in the beta... I remember my first time taking the ship to Orbis and my friends were shouting "GET INSIDE! GET INSIDE!" and it wasn't until Crimson Balrog showed up that I understood why they were freaking out. Good times man, good times.

Fucking same man. There was such a strong community feeling in Maple, and the soundtrack, oh god the soundtrack, it was so majestic the combination with the vibrant and adorable graphics makes me cry. Maple will go down as a veteran game as one of the greatest MMOs to ever exist. It was fun as fuck regardless if you were alone or with friends. The quests, the grinding, the personal challenges, the escape from reality. FUCK..... T_T.........

I played back in 2003 ~ 2004 back when it was called mapleglobal. It was even before Orbis was released. I still remember back when Orbis was released, it was truly magical. Sleepywood was the final area, level 60+ was the highest level in the server.

As an old player, Maple has changed way too much for me to still enjoy the game. I tried the reboot server but maple went from a party game to a solo game and I don't like that at all. They even removed expeditions which was one of my favorite features, having a massive expedition of 3 or 4 different parties was amazing. But now it's just get strong, Pq's are dead, solo grind, solo boss. Whenever I go to a private server the PQ's are full and everyone wants to party.

Yes, I miss the PQs! They have removed the social aspects from the game. They should really increase the rewards for party play, even grinding in parties should be more encouraged! Thanks for watching friend :)

Definitely one of my fondest memories of playing Maple was the PQs and just being able to team up with others was incredibly fun as a kid. I still remember having to figure out which platform to stand on for KPQ and one of my favorites was CPQ and fighting the rombots and racing to see which team had the highest points at the end.

i missed when maplestory only had 4 classes and 3 jobs training as a hermit was so badass using avenger and lucky seven with shadow partner was so fun especially when hermits was the only class to have flash jump honestly if they braught old maplestory back i would no life the fuck out of it again

the thing that i think changed the most in maplestory is that now almost all times being alone will give more to you than in a party, you just get into a party to kill the bosses like 1 time per day and beside that you will always do the other things solo

I played RuneScape first, but it wasn't too long after until I tried MapleStory. Back in the day I didn't understand the whole grind thing, both for RS and Maple. RS I was really into exploring, and roleplaying. Maple challenged me to be very Social. I made a ton of friends in Kerning back in the day, and I got my old Thief's fashion on point, or as much fashion you could get unfunded at lvl 20. I'm not the oldest Maple vet, but I do remember when Cygnis came out and how OP the new knights were compared to the Adventurers.

Oh man... I'm from South East Asia and so played on the SEA client, compared to Global there were some pretty unique areas and insane bosses in the Singapore map to pwn, among other things I remember getting into it back around 2008, the grind was maniacally insane back then but everything about the game's mechanics and maps got refined over time. Managed to get my Archer to lvl 74 and but due to shitty internet never was able play further and keep myself updated with the client. I truly and sincerely believe that Maple was at its most balanced and rewarding form when you played through its 2010-2013 period. Unfortunately almost everything about the game went to shit after that, the extent of the damage can even be felt in the friggin cash shop for cryin out loud! One could get so many different cosmetics, perks and quirky items but even those were reduced to near nothing after Maple's zenith age Seriously what the hell happened?! Who the fuck got in charge of the game?! It's insane how they obliterated the balance and caused to disintegrate. I just knew that something was extremely off when there were barely even any SOLO quests for you to complete among the various tid bits of lore given to you by NPCs and so on. The game became stale, lifeless, dry, devoid of life All that one began to do was to go through a super accelerated grind and bam within like 2-3 frickin hours you're already at level 100!!! How in the motherflyingfuck?! And what's worse, they even had the nerve to immediately throttle exp gains after that initial boost, bloody hell man I miss the old Maple- PvP, lore, setting, music, community, game mechanics, enemies, NPCs, flavor text, etc, etc and even the friggin cash shop!!! These days I just play Honkai Impact 3rd, completely different and unrelated to Maplestory but at least I can feel a similar sensation to my original experience with Maple Goodbye Maple, they really raped you hard

looks like a lot of ppl commenting havent played during the very early days of Maple. I can see some good arguments from both sides however a lot of you forget how back then internet was a fairly new thing and social networks did not really exist. Maplestory was the first ever MMO i have ever played and it was mind blowing and addicting. I would say though that it was not without its flaws. To name a few things: wrong click on wrong stat and you are screwed HP and MP max skills needed to be mastered first (A LOT of MAGES fucked this up) SLOW ass movement overcrowding in PQ area causing massive lag Auto clicking was kind of unfair to others Early beginner DAMAGE WAS GOD AWFUL (except warrior) Calling high level players to harass and KS other players Painfully slow EXP at higher levels Terrible mobbing skills and lack of multi hitting skills made the game very linear and repetitive Learning each stage of PQ was painful and often lead to everyone ganging up on the noob Travelling to different regions were a PITA and a waste of time (Remembered crying when thinking of travelling from Ludi to Victoria) Getting stuck in high level maps JOB advancement quests were tedious and a waste of time Overpriced Mastery Books that could still fail..... Leveling up taking almost a month is ridiculous The good things were: The game was a lot simple to play It was only like 3GB? Now it is over 10GB!!!! Admit PQ was quite fun and made lots of friends Having rare items and good DMG made you GOD and others worshipped you DMG progress was consistent and easy to follow your character growing Classes were much more diverse and distinctive Not many cooldown skills You can actually see other people's character Simple EQUIP tab..... What happened before BB came out was that the slow EXP made players leave and Private servers were popping up and booming. Nexon saw this was a big issue and decreased the EXP. The good things about the current maplestory. Remember that times have changed and people have more choice of activities to do at their free time (KZbin, Twitter, FB, Games Console etc). These increased choices meant that people would not commit the same amount of time than they used to (NOT EVERYONE THOUGH) . No more doing 1 or 2 DMG at the beginning No annoyingly stupid dice to roll (Made some ppl rage quit before they even started the game!!!) Single Stats (Probably more to do with how many character there are now) Actual mobbing skills!! (NO more lucky seven or Slash blow until 3rd JOB) Theme dungeons (Not everyone likes this though) Actual Story/Plot (Although it is still pretty terrible) Smaller maps with less platforms (Some old maps were ridiculous like Ludi Toy factory and Kerning Construction site maps) FASTER MOVEMENT SPEED (Although FLASH JUMP for almost EVERY CLASS is LAME) Removal of Summoning ROCK and Magic STONE Travelling to and from regions are a lot faster (OR just use pantheon portal) Skill graphics are nice Slightly less grinding Accessible for LONERS to play solo The BAD (Oh Boy.....) THE BIGGEST ISSUE OF ALL P2W!!!!!!!!!! LIKE WTF........ LAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGG and unstable server (Sort your Shit out Nexon!!!!) WTF happened to Damage scale? Like seriously???? can not understand WTH is going on. Mobs are weak as Fuck Your HP Bar is just for graphics...... WTF happened to the EQUIP TAB???? It is ridiculously bloated...... Other players are followed by their own little private party (Pets, Andriods, GFX....) ENTIRE MAP IS MOBBED BY 1 PLAYER!!!!! Skills hit way too many times and have way too many lines......I cant see my character but only numbers..... Slowing turning into SINGLEPLAYER RPG with occasional multiplayer Some skill sounds are annoying as hell Class variation are non existent now Old explorer classes are completely different with skills removed!!! Gambling slot machine featuring cubes Everyone hardly talks and feels like zombies, seriously I have seen AI's that are more interesting and interactive Nexon Support seems to get worse than EA and Bungie..... Empty worlds that are useless (Why dont you merge and remove them nexon????) Premium surprise style box (Utter TRASH) NO PQ SOlO BOSSING.....Whats the point of an MMORPG then...... Time zone confusion between EU and NA The lack of socialisation does make the game feel empty and dead. Time has changed and ppl may like end game content but grinding and bossing solo is not fun and defeats one of the fundamental characteristics of an MMORPG. Looking at Maple during pre BB and after BB the game had some serious flaws and issues. MMORPG seems to be in decline so Maplestory is not an isolated case of ppl missing the good old times and hating the current state. For me some changes were welcome but the game has gone to a state were it no longer feels like the game I used to play. It can get overwhelming at times and I can understand why ppl are upset about the current state the game is in while some welcome the changes. Man I ended up writing an essay.......

I agree, except I actually miss the old JQs. They felt like they had a lot of meaning. Was overjoyed every time I completed a JQ, and I remember seeing a video of the Hero JQ, it required flying to Orbis (back when they had the old travel system). No Pantheon Portal, do not pass go, do not collect $200, you gettin on that airship, boi, and gonna sit there and wait. And now that I think of it, I actually miss waiting for a flight, and waiting for the flight to be over, got to hang out with other players and socialize. I think that's why MS2 is more social based, to bring back that social aspect.

Back in the day I never got passed lvl 35(I was 7), then I quit, then came back and played on and off through out the years until bb, I didn’t mind the beginning of bb but after Red I stopped playing. I'm a current maple player, I didn't play oldschool unfortunately (didn't know about it at the time) but ive been playing for a few years now. I can't for the life of me see how this game is appealing to any new players, it's a grind fest, and if you don't have a fun guild or people you play with, there's no redeeming qualities in playing. I just hope nexon releases a classic maple at some point, that would be awesome (i know theres classic private servers, but i could never get into private servers)

Classic Maple was a grind fest as well. Having a guild and people to play with has always been important. Old MS just had more players and more interaction between complete strangers. Grinding has always been the biggest focus of the game and it's not like the variety of it has changed. The current playerbase just plays way more efficient than they used to in 2006-2010. I agree on the point that you probably have to play it for a long time to enjoy it but the thing is.. the maplestory community mostly consists of old players who know eachother well. New players have a hard time to adept to that but it's not impossible. On the other hand, old players who have played together for years.. well you don't just quit, you don't just grind, you don't just boss, you don't just spend money.. You're part of a circle of friends that simply enjoy doing all these things maple has to offer. Sometimes the only communication with someone is via buddy-chat or alliance-chat, sometimes it is via discord or hell.. Whatsapp. What I'm saying is: Maple really hasn't changed a lot when it comes to the main reasons to play the game. It just grew with time... and some guy at nexon really wanted to make a lot of money with it and got us a pay-trillions-to-have-decent-equip-system. But yeah.. underline those trillions. True Endgame in maple is more than just p2w and grinding the shit out of it.

classic maple player chiming in here! Yeah back when there were 4 classes, leveling was hella harder than now. Like even getting to level 30 made you seem like some kinda pro lmao. But I'm sure everyone will agree that the main thing that kept players going despite all the tediousness was the community. Making friends, parties and having constant interaction made everything seem so meaningful and adventurous.

True, the grind was way worse back in 2005. I remember getting 30% of exp per hour but it felt so rewarding each time you level or find a new equip or scrolls! Had a lot of friends playing them too and we aspired to be reach 4th job together. Every time they introduced a new map, it was such a great joy to explore them and level up high enough to get to those dangerous places! Every new monster we encounter was unique and interesting on their own and we relish the chance to be able to train at those spots. It was all about the journey, and not the endgame, even though we work towards them slowly on our own pace. We didn't care if we didn't have the highest damage or the best scrolled equips. We made do with what we have on our own. At the end, only a few of us made it to 4th job and we've already grown up with responsibilities and work. Great memories...

I think the big difference between old an new maple lies in one factor: COMMUNITY Its something that current maple completely lacks, in no way is it beneficial for a person these days to find friends/find parties/find guilds Old maple had this magic, because PQs were extremely lucrative compared to regular grinding, everyone was doing it. This meant people always teamed up and those who constantly teamed up ends up as friends. Furthermore, bosses were actually difficult. I remember pre 4th job days where there were parties of like 10-20people for zakum with tons of chief bandits doing meso explosions for like half an hour to beat the dam boss. nowadays Zakum is just a joke, this further promotes teamwork Lastly, and I think most importantly, the internet(youtube, wikis) weren't really a thing back then, so in order to get information, you got it out of online friends/guild. You would go up to a high level and ask "Hey how did you get xxx item, where did you train?" or "Hey can you show me some of your 4th job skills?(as we worship them like gods)". Its true for any game, it doesn't matter how grindy a game is, as long as you are playing with a friend, its always fun. Maplestory was fun in that you can literally spend an entire day not getting a single % of exp because you just screwed around with other people. showing off glitches that you know, doing drop games, all this stuff really contributed to the success of maplestory. And its something that games nowadays have completely loss the magic of

It almost feels like this game could've been as good and eternal as WoW, but the small mistakes on the road kept adding up and this game was destroyed, it's really sad when we think about it. I mean they had to be innovative and kept bringing new food to the table, but it almost seems like they were money-hungry or just lots of pressure in what the game could grow into. Poor decisions went onto this road, but the thing that I hate the most about what they did is that they made everything so much EASIER. This was a game that you needed to take your time, level up, grind, get new equipment, it was all VEEERY slow-paced and hard to climb, some people liked that and I would dare to say it was one of the main aspects. There was also the exploration aspect that this guy mentioned in the video, the game felt alive and waiting to be explored, like jump quests, new mob farming spots or just finding a secret mysterious area, with an NPC that tells you nothing. And the bosses in the game were amazing, from what I remember from private servers at least (I only reached like lv 70-80 max in the official, cause I was young and my progression was terrible xD). I think all in all, what brings us back is the nostalgia of those days and the situation we were in at the time. For me, it was a beautiful escape from school and a place I made many friends that I still talk to today.. and I(we) will never have that feeling back :P sadly This was a very immersive game! I think there's stuff to be learned from this game model in order to keep new games interesting. From what I've analyzed: -difficulty -exploration -cohesive artwork -easy interface -an immense and continuous feeling of progresson (due to how hard was in the days to get 3rd job advancement and 4th) -events that kept the community together (like Christmas, one of my best christmas years was spent in MapleStory instead of being around the family. My guild was my family) these were a few of the things p.s.: F3 was the bomb, and fuck all of you auto-clickers in Kerning PQ XD

Besides probably like, Tree of Savior, there aren't many other mmo's on the market that have the same kind of atmosphere Maplestory did. I'm talking about the art, animations, and settings, not social atmosphere. There just isn't any other mmo that does it like Maplestory except Tree of Savior.

I had a few, Silkroad, Maple story, Metin 2 and Runescape. But to be honest, Silkroad will ALWAYS be my number one. No game in existance has been so good. It's such a shame how it all "ended" with bots destroying the game completely.

Dude so true. Or at least for most of the people I know. It was usually RS or MS. I started on RS when I was using Juno dial up LOL then I moved on to MS. Oh the days! Played like 20/7. I remember waking up to the FM music and seeing if my items sold. I say screw the graphics "standards". If people can like Minecraft people can like Maplestory. Not everything has to be about 3D Human looking graphics. And the TRAVELING. I think why a lot of the MMOs these days that I try are so "boring" is cause everything you can do almost always by yourself. I'll just see people running around or TPing and always in there own bubble. Spending 5 mins on a flying ship with other players was a great way to make new friends. Same with the PQs. And it wasn't just about slaying monsters in the PQ you also had to do puzzles. Sigh. I hope they bring back this element in future MMOs. Less of the Idle and single player stuff.

Me too. I made it a goal to level every single class. Although I think there's a limit of 16 character slots even after character slot extensions, isn't there? Oh well, I can still have 16 fully maxed out toons, and when I get bored of those go on another account/server and do the same thing with 16 other classes :)

LOL people dont even take ships. Even collecting stamps to telepoort is a bit antiquated. People just wate their money on teleport rocks once a month. Also no, the bosses have also gotten alot easier to find/do, likely because of the internet and there being guides and tip videos about almost any boss you can think of.

Honestly I played this game a lot with breaks. But at some point I wanted to make money and I made 60bill in half a year (this was back when 2bill was max money I believe 2013 I got that much. I remember having 2 accounts with like 5or more acts with max money. Then some stupid red update came, this got a lot of hackers in the game or something. And all my acs got hacked. I remember being followed by multiple hackers cause I was a well known man for being really rich :(. I am so sad that happened

i just want to say this, maple like many other mmos made a huge mistake by not pushing and rewarding people for the benefits of party play, this were not only the funnest features (cpq, traveling alongside people, bossing with huge raids) but the main reason why people played, they made it so being in a party had no real benefits unless doing party quests that to be fair were awsome, but instead they pushed for the antisocial people who would rather spend thousands of dollars to grind alone and have all the best eqps. Focusing primarily in individual play is a huge mistake in an mmo, dragonnest did the same thing and it was a very promising game but then it flopped and its dying too. I understand they have to make money somehow but the way maple did it, its so obscenely pay to win its not even funny edit: even ariant temple pq was awsome back when aran first came out

hackers, account hackers, scammers, prequest to do any bosses. ruined the game. All the while i had a great time . Also Nexon is a shit company (lasox) Darkknight when we had to manage our HP to get the buff.
