It could also be a feint, sukuna can use dismantle without doing a pose, but in his fight with mahoraga, he allways did a pose with dismantle, so mahoraga adapted to that, so that could've been a feint and had mahoraga react

Taking into account the publication of the original storyboards with notes, it says that Makora by this point in the fight was confused due to Sukuna's mind games and expected that any action by Sukuna could be another attack, so he ran after Sukuna, LITERALLY, fighting with the air, so that preemptively block Sukuna's attack, which was never coming. You can also notice that in this shot the wheel keep spinning non stop, which indicates that at that moment he was trying to adapt to Sukuna's attacks, but that's why Sukuna was just teasing him and not actually attacking waiting when the wheel will Gakon

It'll be clear which one is better. Compare the animation, and damn, s2 contains so many amazing scenes, it's constantly moving and some episodes like ep16 are on another level. The background in s1 looked terrible at times, but it's not in s2. Composition was a major issue, and s2 fixed it. What you may consider animation is the detail. Which, honestly, I did not like much in s1, but it's a personal opinion. They certainly did not ruin anything. The animation, composition, drawing quality, everything is so much better in s2. I don't get why you'd say that.

A funfact about 3:02 to 3:22 for those who don’t know. The reason behind all the funky/funnier buts were revealed in the storyboards. You’ll notice Sukuna does several movements but slashes never followup some of the movements. This is because Sukuna is doing fake out slashes to confuse Mahoraga since Mahoraga handled being slashed to bits by moving his attacks in such ways that when say his arm was cut off it would be launched at Sukuna like a missile. So the fake slashes are to confuse him, next when we see Mahoraga shadow boxing while Sukuna is just pointing at him. This is Mahoraga still being confused but still through punches to send at Sukuna like missiles if he cuts a limb off, but Sukuna isn’t slashing. We can tell thay Mahoraga is actively trying to figure out how to adapt to this by his Wheel frantically spinning. Finally, Sukunas sick joy. While it isn’t very clear, at about 3:25 give or take a second, Mahoraga finally adapts and makes a fakeout left jab that Sukuna tries to dodge not knowing it was a fakeout. But then Mahoraga twists his body to deliver a fierce right hook that connects with Sukuna. The reason Sukuna is SO happy that Mahoraga faked him out to land a punch, is because to Sukuna this means he just taught a divine being, something which is pure, how to lie. Effectively tainting the Divine General. Overall I think thats actually awesome work by the storyboard artists and very well executed by the animators

I think the black background scenes are the animators putting emphasis on the two combatting bodies, removing any and all visual noise in those short sequences leaving just the two people were looking at, which also gives the animators more freedom to make the character models move more wildly. No Maroka did not lmao. In fact Sukuna isn't doing anything at all. He literally just points his finger towards Makora, but since Makora is confused after all the mind games, Makora thought that Sukuna will attack in every move, but he didn't at all. That's why Makora's wheel kept spinning gakon gakon (ガコン/gakon is Makora's wheel sfx) in that specific scene because he's too confused wether Sukuna is attacking or not. This is just Makora being goofy and completely stupid as the response to Sukuna's mind game. Eventually after that cut Makora adapts to Sukuna's mind game and he also faked an attack which made him finally land a hit on Sukuna (the cut where Makora punches Sukuna and the screen turns black and white). I think what people also forgot is that the fight is also verty detailed in how these two fight. Like you have Sukuna tricking Makora in thinking he's going to attack and Makora falling for it wich is my favorite scene (because it shows how well though the fight is beside the animation), or just the involvement of the civilian just being slaughtered as the fight goes on (we didnt saw any civilian in the manga until the domain expansion). Thats my personnal oppinion but I think the all these details makes this fight way more interesting to watch than just complete destruction like Jogo vs Sukuna (even tho it was a banger too). And the fact that we have this much animation for a FULL episode is absolutely fantastic.

2:11 this was infact intentional To give a little hindsight from the Animation Board for the fight, Sukuna is actually Pump Faking Mahoraga, who was Adapting to Dismantle by sending the Limbs that got cut off by Sukuna as Projectiles, and the Silly little moment of Mahoraga Shadow Boxing is it anticipating when Sukuna will use Dismantle to sever a Limb. And why Sukuna looked so Happy at 3:23 was because Mahoraga actually read Sukuna's dodge and 180° Punched him, he was so Happy because he essentially taught Mahoraga how to lie, Tainting it's Divine Status.

I wish more anime took a no line art style in fights, i think it allows for much more fluid looking motion and its really just awesome AF. It just felt like it removed a kind of restriction on the character's movements when they did that. Of course line art animation isnt bad but its interesting to see it used like this. I think at the least it would be really effective to replace effects like fire or water movements, things that are rather undefined in shape and move in a volatile manner.

the funniest part is I think the 'no-follow through' on that one scene is actually perfect, because Sukuna hit Big Raga with the NASTIEST PUMP FAKE OF ALL TIME and it was indeed SO NASTY that it cut off ALL THE MUSIC

it's kinda funny seeing people who don't know anything about animation complain about "bad animation" AND also when that animation is so short/unnoticeable that you can't see it unless you play it in .25x speed and pause every millisecond
