While it is terrible there was a leak, it is fortune that you caught it before the archival documents were put back. They could have been damaged by that leak. I live in an old farmhouse ( almost 200 years old) and we discover unexpected things like this on our projects too. Loved to hear you are keeping the window and restoring the fireplace, but not planning to use it for safety reasons. Really enjoying this renovation.

I have been a homeowner for 30 years and my houses were built in the 1920s. When your ceiling stain was pointed out my first thought was, “Is this historical water damage, or is this an ongoing problem”? When you started painting the ceiling before answering that question I thought, “Oh my. They could be in for an unpleasant surprise“. My advice - The men seem to be very thorough with their roof patching; but if I were you I’d bring in a professional roofer; there are modern products that can be used to seamlessly seal large areas of an otherwise structurally sound roof. One thing I’ve learned is, “Water will find a way”. Good luck to you.

The re-treeing initiative is wonderful. I’m re-reading a novel ‘The Forest’ by Edward Rutherford at the moment about the history of the New Forest from 1099 to the present time. Although the families are fictitious there are actual historical events woven in to the stories and the Montague family is a thread throughout. It’s interesting to read how forest management was organised over the centuries.

A leaky roof - the calling card of many historic homes. When our 100 year old home sprung a leak we did a similar patch job on a flat portion. Once the sealant dried we poured quite a lot of water over the area and we watched the course the water took. It enable us to find a few more seepage spots.

You and your team of experts never cease to amaze me . We bought a fixer upper built in 1905 It's not had much care taken of it. I didn't know till I tried to move it and nearly did myself an injury.🙄 Good luck with all you do to bring back your wonderful house to it's former glory, I am envious 💖💖

Hello Luke and Julie From Maine! Wouldn’t it be fun at one of your annual events to shear a sheep, show how it is then washed, dyed, carded and then spun. Maybe whoever you could find to do this could also show knitted jumpers from that sheep‘s wool. Just a thought! Good luck with finishing the archive room. I’m sure it will be beautiful when it is done.

I think by now you have made a decision for your hidden window, but this is what I would have done. I would have opened the window, painted a scenery on the wall inside the window, installed some low light lights, and used the window as if it was a 'working" window. I would have installed bookcases up to the bottom of the window, and use the top of the bookcases as a shelf to hold statues, pictures, vases, books being held by an easel. Move your chair from the side of the fireplace to in front of the bookcase. Can't wait to see the room all finished. Love the colors.

There are rain gutters coming down onto the roof right at the area of the leak, which adds additional water over and above what that area would get with just rain (in a heavy rain it would add a massive amount). Is there any way to re-route those gutters to run down the exterior of the building and drain onto the ground instead of draining onto the roof? Also, the wall adjoining the roof work area has an interesting brick arch in it, which can be seen at the beginning of the roof leak sequence and also very clearly at 14:20. I was surprised that the arch was not mentioned. Perhaps in a future video could you talk a little about this brick arch? Is it part of a room on the other (inside) side of the wall? It doesn't seem like it would have been intended to be purely decorative due to its location in a place not visible unless one climbed onto that section of the roof.
