The seventeenth Mapping Ancient Africa seminar was delivered by N’dji dit Jacques Dembele (President of WAQUA, Université des sciences sociales et de gestion de Bamako, Mali). In his presentation he showed new evidence for Quaternary seismic activity in western Africa based on deformation of palaeo-lake and fluvial sediments. An abrupt transition from lake to fluvial sedimentation after c. 170,000 years ago was indicated as possible evidence for a major reorganisation of river systems following seismic activity.
