Very cool that you picked up on Avi's overtone singing. Sometimes he does it where there are distinct "whistle" notes that you can hear and other times when it is used to sound like an Australian Didgeridoo. In this performance you can hear his overtone whistle notes.
@rlhcat76627 жыл бұрын
If you listen during Kirstie's solo, he is doing the "digeridoo" whirring noise.

If you have Netflix they have a documentary about them called, Pentatonix On My Way Home. The 3 auditioned for the Sing Off and were told they had to have two more people to qualify. They found Avi and Kevin and had gotten together only the day before their next audition. As you know they won, and moved to L.A. once they were there the record company dropped them, because they felt they weren't marketable. That's when they went to KZbin and the rest is history.
@Curandera997 жыл бұрын
No, they did not audition with just the 3. Scott was in his Freshman year in college at the University of Southern California and joined their acapella group, the "SoCal VoCals." Different acapella members had competed in the Sing Off in prior years and suggested to Scott he try out. He called and asked Mitch and Kirstie if they wanted to try out with him and his friends at SoCal VoCals told him he needed a beat boxer and bass in order to be competitive. One of his friends told him about Avi who was at a different California college and another showed him Kevin's viral video. Kevin was on the East Coast and had just finished his undergraduate degree from Yale. Scott e-mailed everyone their parts and all 5 finally got together to sing and practice for the first time for their FIRST and ONLY audition for the Sing Off the next day.

FYI, Scott met Mitch when they were 9-10 years old and in a play together. Mitch knew Kirstin in middle school (early teens), then they all got together as a group when Mitch entered their high school (he was a year behind Scott and Kirstin). They were in the music program at the performing arts high school and would do arrangements together. Their first viral video was “Telephone,” first recorded in one of their bedrooms, and then performed as a set-changing bit during their choir’s concert. That live performance went viral outside of their high school and spread throughout the a cappella scene in the US. When Scott entered USC as a pop music major, that video had him already marked as a singer to watch, and he was accepted into the preeminent a cappella group on campus, the SoCal Vocals. People there had already been on The Sing-Off two years earlier and encouraged Scott to get together with Mitch and Kirstin, adding a bass and beatboxer, at a minimum. Ben Bram, former SoCal Vocal and TSO staff arranger in Season 2, got Scott together with both Avi and Kevin, and he is now their producer and co-arranger on most of their music. Avi had been on the short list to join The Backbeats, a group from TSO’s second season, but he was sick on the audition day. Kevin’s “Julie-O” video had gone viral in both the a cappella and classical music world and got Ben to contact him (his bio on KZbin mentioned his attending Yale, and Ben knew Whiffenpoof members there through TSO, so he got Kevin’s phone number that way). Ben and Scott split Kevin’s airfare to fly out and meet them in LA, a decision none of them have ever regretted.

The judge just said it was a little fast "coming out of the gate." Not the whole song. The guy is a REALLY good coach. Actually, they all are. One of the GREAT things about Pentatonix is that they are open to criticism. They analyze everything they do and they work to make things better. So glad you are watching this competition. You will see as they progress that they do take their time to start slow and then build up, they don't rush through the whole thing. There is a pause they take in "Born to Be Wild" that is breath-taking. You can virtually see them learning from week to week. Great reaction guys! Can't wait to watch the rest of the episodes with you!

I remember Kirstie saying she met Scott in English class where the teacher picked on her and Scott helped her out. Kirstie attended Holy Rosary Catholic School and THEN Martin High School. I haven't found out where Scott went to middle school but I really doubt he went to Holy Rosary Catholic School. So I think Scott and Kirstie met in High School. I remember Kirstie and Mitch were both in some traveling singing group, so maybe they met earlier in that group. I'll do some more research.

Well, that didn't take long. Here it is, Kirstie met Mitch when she was 8, but didn't meet Scott until she was in high school. "Kirstie: I’ve known Mitch since I was 8 years old. I was friends with Scott since high school so we’re all friends. It’s never really weird unless those times when there’s one dressing room. We’re all like one big family." asian-fusion.com/916/interview-with-pentatonix--kirstie-maldonado/

What you hear in the "background sounds" is Avi doing what's called overtone singing. Two notes at once. The trio were 19 at the time of this show.
@rlhcat76627 жыл бұрын
Wow wow wow! It's so great that you are going back and doing their Sing-Off performances. Scott, Mitch and Kirstie met as very young kids, 8 or 10, but all 5 of them weren't able to meet until 2 days before their audition for the show! It is the depth of each of their talent that allowed them to meld together so quickly as a group. They get stronger each week, and the judges give them honest and sometimes funny comments. Also, Marco commented on a whistle sound during Mitch's solo, and there is also a whirring noise during Kirstie's solo. These are both done by Avi doing his overtone singing while singing bass! How brave was that!
@rayraudebaugh53957 жыл бұрын

So glad you're doing these. It's amazing how those elements were there from the beginning. Especially since they recruited Avi JUST before this competition. So, they had to learn to blend voices, do choreo, arranging, while learning what each was best at so quickly. But it's all there. Kirstie and Mitch's gorgeous solos, Scott's riffs, Avi and Kevin and they way they blend their voices, the beats.. it's fun to watch the 'evolution of Pentatonix' that this show kind of is.

Yes! I think some reactors drop after 2 and 3 and that is a MISTAKE! I think it's important though because you see that them winning was NOT a given. I've even watched the other groups and it really was a competition. There was a lot of real talent on that show!

what sucks is after winning the Sing Off, one week after they all moved to L.A., they were dropped from their record deal, & were told a cappella couldn't sell. they had to start from scratch on KZbin. but it was ultimately for the best, cause they weren't tied to a reality show contract; they could fully be themselves, & build their brand & their group how they wanted to. and having such a close, intimate connection with their fans only adds to their authenticity.

If you don't think you can do them all, a couple of really great ones were Week 5, Week 7 (my favorite, Avi, Scott and Kevin kill it), Week 10 and Week 12. But they are all great fun and interesting.
