The desert in Namibia, Botswana, Angola and South Africa is the Kalahari desert and is the second biggest desert in Africa, Jack. It's also sometimes called the desert that is not a desert because many areas are full of extremely hardy and drought resistant trees, bushes and grasses. NASA 'discovered' millions of trees in that area they previously didn't account for, apparently. If you're interested in the lifestyle of the area you should watch the movie, The Gods Must Be Crazy.

I doubt you'll see this but fun fact about the US buying Alaska. People largely believed it to be a mistake to buy it and called the decision Seward's Folly. The price came out to around 2 cents an acre, and at the time the land wasn't considered to be useful enough to spend that on it in the 1860s. It was largely purchased out of a desire to remove Russia from North America, but then they found the oil up there.
