Many complain about the lack of romance in this movie , but honestly the story it conveys is much more than that . There’s something about this movie that held my entire attention and I even kept going back to repeat some scenes that I liked . I’m not saying it’s the best but for me it’s one of the few movies that I sure will remember for the rest of my life . It definetely stands out story-wise and art style wise . Spoiler : The saddest part of the movie imo is when Maquia was recalling Ariel’s whole life , from the minute she found him and then through puberty( he called her attention by “ne” instead of calling her mom ) and finally until she and him parted ways for the last time . I mean that scene , as much as it was predictable, was done brilliantly and it’s definitely my fave scene .

I swear on my fucking life, that I have not and I mean NOT cried THIS much throughout an anime movie which had so many emotions packed up together since I don't even know, Grave of Fireflies? I'm not a person who gets sentimental over anime to affect real life to the extreme, whatever this movie has done sure affected me and everyone who watched it. Whatever you are doing, even through all those puddles of tear, think thoroughly about the strong message this passed throughout its entirety and with no shame whatsoever go give your mother a big hug and tell her what she wants to hear.

The thing that I love about this movie is that it takes a pretty traditional fantasy world setting, but makes it real. Most fantasy anime read off like an RPG. The worldbuilding is cliche, the only job seems to be working as some sort of bounty hunter in a guild, and there is a general lightness to the mood that doesn't really do justice to the potential of the genre. In this movie, however, everything felt real. The characters had emotions and responded to the things happening to their world appropriately. They have depth. It allows you to really immerse yourself in this world and story that is completely foreign, yet still feel a connection to all of the characters because fundamentally, they are all still human.
@xuefanli44694 жыл бұрын
yes i agree. the whole idea of this movie was about the journey of motherhood, something a big portion of humans experience so it made it more relatable in a way. it made the characters more like us humans.
@obshussion84014 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you
@onlyaraku2 жыл бұрын
I agree wholeheartedly. I've seen so many isekai anime among others with such subpar differentiation in terms of worldbuilding that they could practically all come from the same world. I firmly believe that a thoughfully crafted world can offer so much to a story and really enable the reader to invest themselves in the characters and the obstacles they face. Some of the most popular and widely acclaimed anime have masterful worldbuilding and I'd argue that it is one of the main factors they owe their success to. Three series that immediately come to mind: Attack on Titan, Made in Abyss and Jobless Reincarnation.

On the day Maquia released in theaters, my brother asked if I wanted to go see it alongside him. I agreed, though it was just because I was young and into anything remotely relating to anime. On that day, it was all such a blur, but I vividly remember thinking that it was now my favorite movie of all time. I did not remember my reason for making such a bold statement as time went on, the movie entering the deepest crevices of my memory. What I did remember was that despite not understanding the deeper meanings of the movie, it was the most beautiful thing that I had ever watched in my life. Now, almost four years later, I have rewatched the movie and it has made tears stream out of me for the first time in months. This movie is such a wonderful work of art; the direction, the characters, the plot, the visuals, the love between a parent and a son… It’s all so beautiful. For nearly four years, Maquia has stood as my most favorite film to ever exist to date, and I don’t think a single film in the future could ever take its spot. After all, a mother’s love will always be eternal.

So, I just got to see this a few days ago, and yeah, I was a wreck after it over. Such a great movie, but that ending, it hit me so damn hard. Earlier this year, I lost my wife. I have not dealt with this well. I don't anyone does. But the theme of the film, how loving someone makes you lonely, it kind of hit me hard. What hit me harder though, was Maquia knowing that she was now lonely, but was so full of joy that she had been loved so much. Yeah. That's just what I needed to hear. Thank you, Okada-senpai. Thank you for reminding me how blessed I have been in my life. For I have been loved.
@Moonless64915 жыл бұрын
I can't compare to what you have lost. I had a girl leave me after I dated her for 7 years, and I knew her for more than that. I was about to propose, but I found out some things she did that mad it clear it was time to end. I lost most friends in the process because we both knew the same people. The feeling of absolute loneliness is the worst thing in the world. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I have found an odd friend in anime. It's story telling medium is something that can't be duplicated. Many different shows have made me think an realize that many other people are just as lonely and damaged as the rest of us. I have found a certain joy in suffering though. It has made me aware of many things I never thought of before, and I feel I understand the human condition maybe a little bit better. All I can do is be kind to people, and maybe one day I'll find someone else. I wanted to see this movie in theaters, but I missed the show date, so I'm gonna watch it at home. It must be good with a soundtrack like this. I hope things work out for you.

@@Moonless6491 I'd like to say it's getting easier, but it really isn't. Still, little by little, I'm doing okay. I couldn't agree more with your words on anime. This anime ended in a good way but it still makes me moved and burnt out into tears... Maquia always tried to be a good mom but she's actually, already, a true mom. Though Ariel ran away from his feeling for her, it also meant that he left her alone, she still forgave him, and loved him as always. Thanks god that they met again when Ariel had his own precious family, when his feelings grew to be a great regret, so that he could say sorry to her and faced her as the way he was her child. At last, he was her child, again, and Maquia was happy with that though she couldn't be with him...

I've been listening to this video for years but I just finished watching the movie last night. Cried tears when Ariel said, "Don't go, Mom", when Ariel said "Welcome home" as he was laying in his bed as an old man, and when Maquia started crying at the end, especially during the flashback of her remembering how Ariel grew up along with her. Cried more after the credit scenes as well as after the movie was done. I loved how the whole movie focused on motherhood/parenthood, unconditional love, and Maquia's and Ariel's growth as human beings (despite Maquia not really being human in a sense). To add, I personally think the whole moral of the movie is that it is better to love someone unconditionally, whether it be romantic or not, and be hurt from said love than to never love at all regardless if you can live for a long time or not. Losing someone you love is scary but I think not loving anyone or anyone not loving you is even more terrifying in it's own way. A life without love seems kind of pointless and dull to me.

When I was watching the part where Ariel was fighting and Dita struggling to give birth to her baby, I suddenly had a terrifying premonition which I'm glad never came true in the movie. Suppose Ariel did die from that attack (there was good chance he would). And Dita, after giving birth to her child, would die too due to lack of assistance and treatment, say Maquia was too late. And then when Maquia would reach her, she would see a dead Dita clasping her child in her dead-cold fingers. Maquia would bend down to see whether the child was alive, and the child would catch Maquia's fingers..... Just like that moment she had discovered Ariel... She would once again pick up Ariel's child in her arms... And maybe she'd find that old Lorphian guy too, smiling in agony, Smiling at the endless cycle of pain and suffering the Lorphians had to bear If they ever loved a human. And the cycle would take them back to square one, And like a refrain make them go through the times Of peace, happiness, anger, sorrow, anxiety, Just to end in despair, and begin once again. This could be an alternate ending for Maquia's life, but then it would have been a bit too traumatic, right?

I wonder if this is the afterlife where, in the end they both reunited and got to meet again, in a single precious moment of peace, tranquility and serenity where all they need to feel complete is each other...Thank you and God bless you, Maquia and Ariel; the most beautiful and truly precious and heartbreaking story of "Sincere, Truly Precious, Beautiful Sentiment of Pure Familial Bond, of Pure Familial Love." May you both rest well in peace right by each other's side now.

There are very few anime that can make me cry. This one is the most emotional one I had ever seen in my life. I would recommend anyone to watch this once in their life. It’s a masterpiece of an anime production both visual and story.

This anime really affected me as a mother to a lovely cat name Mataye. I found her just like Maquia found Ariel. I buried her mother that day when I found her on the street. She lives more than a decade now. I watch her grow everyday. From the moment I fed her for the first time until she is now. That moment when I help her giving birth to beautiful kittens. It's sad watching her now. She's very old 😭 she's older than me in human age

im the same way with my dog Lady... i got her when she was only 3 months old... I almost didnt pick her from all the other pups in the litter but when we were signing the papers for a different dog i picked that particularly liked my dad... i took a look at her and it was as if she was looking at me like i was abandoning her... so i said no to signing the papers and got her instead... best decision ive ever made in my life... she stood out to me by jumping and climbing over all her brothers and sisters to get to me... and she was licking me crazily and biting me playfully at the same time... thats when i knew she was the one... she is such a perfect beautiful sweet smart charming lovely lucky Lady... Shes about to be 11 this year and has gotten sick numerous times... shes been having a tough time walking and its so hard to see her and not think that one day I will have to bury by lil baby lady... its as if ive been grieving for the amount of time that ive had her.... its so hard.... shes still here but not a day goes by where i dont think about her and how grateful i am for her... we dont deserve our furbabies thats for sure... such a shame god let us shitty humans live longer

This movie!!!!!!! I love this movie and the reason I love it is because it showcased the unconditional love, a love that will always return with nothing but love even through thick and thin. [spoiler]When Ariel left her, I was sad of his action for doing so but I thought about my own relationship with my mom and there was time I want to go too... it’s not because I don’t love her but I was old enough to make my own decisions and then there was time I said that I don’t regret anything but it came back to me that the child in me will always be there and I will always love and miss my mom. But this movie shows the part she came back to him, help his wife give birth, also help the wounded him. It was the most beautiful selfless love that stirred the past memories of him and her that his mom will always be his mom. The relationship with his wife show that through the love he got from his mother, he was going to be the gentle soul that going to love another person the way his mother taught him to love. The last scene where she flew on renata was also beautiful. It show that she was ready to accept that he have his own life and that he was going to live to the fullest because she wish him nothing but love. Truly a magical movie to showcase the unconditional love ❤️ I will always remember this movie

Somehow I always find my way back here, it’s been years, Years at this point. How odd the fabric of time passes, feeling so helpless at times, it’s a little reassuring to know we all are. In all honesty, every time I listen to, watch, I find myself unable to control my tears. This story while fantastical always tells a human story, there’s always people strive ahead! So while we slowly grow into our own, watch us grow. Watch and even if we take our time it’s okay. The garden of flowers will bloom! -Sorry, if I rambled too much, but this is so nostalgic to come back and revisit. Even now, the skies are blooming with promised flowers.

I first saw this movie during one of my anime club meetings. We literally extended our session time and didnt leave until we finished the entire movie. By the end I was pretty much crying on the inside and I tried so hard to control my tears because there were people in the room. I first thought that this movie was gonna have a lot of romance because of how the first few minutes turned out but it was really just about the bond between parents and their children. Visuals and animations were great and the soundtracks were amazing. Wished this movie got more recognition that it definitely deserves.

This movie impacted me the way I never expected it to. I would've beaten myself up for not watching this film earlier. The first time I watched this is back in August 2019. And it hurts me a lot because it perfectly showed the beauty of maternal love, of mother and son. It hurts, because I knew then that I never had the chance to show this to my mom, who sadly passed away 4 months prior. It's really beautiful and I'm sure she would've loved it too. :)

The usage of strings in this soundtrack is lovely. From the Piano strings being hit by the pedals to the gentle strums of some sort of guitar-like instrument and the soft wails of the violin, this soundtrack uses the string to tell a story. Just like the Hibiol they weave.

I honestly regret not watching this earlier. It's truly a masterpiece. I'm usually one who is very picky about soundtracks and I have never cried watching anime. I've watched many Studio Ghibli films, Violet Evergarden, a Silent Voice, I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, and many other sad anime, but none were able to make me even shed a tear (though some were close). However, this movie had me crying multiple times, and by the end, I was just sobbing. It's truly beautiful.

This promotional poster was so misleading for me. When I saw this image I thought that Maquia and Ariel were gonna be in love but because Maquia ages slowly they wouldn’t be able to grow old together but it was completely different and instead they were mother and son. It caught me off guard and it was WAY better and so much more emotional than I thought it was gonna be
