No, if you build a reciever that actually needs the width and depth it would look bad to make a small disc, or other component. So the make the basic dimensions the same, allowing them to be stacked. Also, airflow and cooling are a factor things run hot, so keeping them away from the surface is required. It takes a lot to engineer a quality product, even more to design components that are compatible with each other, and are appealing to the eye.
