Using your excellent video I've replaced the laser on my CD63 SE MKII KI with the Philips VAM1202. The player wasn't spinning up which I read was due to focus gain issue, a sign of a failing laser. It now plays every disc but does suffer from random skipping on most CD's every 2 or 3 tracks. I'm going to clean and re-grease the transport mechanism and apply the 10p coin trick to add a little bit of weight which is said to stabilise the CD and cure the skipping issue. I understand that there are better players out there now, but having recently retired I can't justify the expense. I still get so much pleasure from this CD player that I'll keep it going for as long as I can still get spare parts. Thanks again for the excellent video.

Thanks for sharing. I have the same Marantz cdp 63 se. Still using for more than 20 years. Repair once for lens replacement. Once I repair myself with damaged gear and rubber belt. I still enjoy listening. Well designed and nice sound of its time.

I have Marantz CD-63 on which the tray would no longer eject. I had a new drive belt for it, but I could not figure out how to access it after removing the player's top cover and 6 screws. This video helped me greatly! Thank you! I now again have a working CD-63 with a tray that slides in an out like butter.

+1 ... Once you have the top cover removed and press the tab in to allow removal of the tray, then the gear wheels and belt are easily changed. This video really helped 😃

@@SCal07 hey mate ok thx so would that be the black wheel in the front/beginning of the tray we see for a second? And the belt etc is attached underneath that (which hes not doing anything with here)? I saw an older model with some orange wheel and a belt just next to it to the right horisontally and very easy to change but this looks very tricky! Once again thx for the reply

Forgive me chipping in and I'm no electronics expert but I had a similar problem when my Toyota sat nav system would not read the dvd map disc, so......I disassembled from the dash (not too tricky having seen it done on KZbin) and after removing some tiny screws, gently unplugging ribbon cables and prising open the spring loaded clamp that holds the disc, I got access to the laser assembly. I then dabbed a couple of spots of silicone furniture polish onto the two guide rails for the laser with a q-tip and could feel it moving much more smoothly. Then the re-assembly (top tip is to video or take pictures as you start and pick your way back in reverse). I reached the one way fit connectors in the cars dash and bolted it back in place. Turned the key and......ta da! The sat nav fired up and has been OK now for about a year. Thanks for your videos. It's always good to see someone practising their craft. Mike

I tought it was necessary to calibrate the laser too, but in your video it isn't so... laser beam intensity is already calibrated from factory or doing any calibration we get the risk to burn the new laser in short time?

How do you increase laser power? Thanks.
@norcal7154 жыл бұрын
In most cases there is a small potentiometer on the optical pick up itself that governs the laser power. Normally if you have to adjust it the laser diode is so weak that it won't output anymore power.

all is well and good, but you changed the laser diode to a non phillips laser, so it will affect audio quality playback, i have just sent of for a replacement laser for my first addition cd63, due to sticking and crackling issue faulty focus due to age of laser £20 of ebay from malaysia

No really, I had changed the laser head for a few rounds, both on Marantz CD63SE KI and the higher grade SFCD1. There is no degradation of audio quality. I am using Sonic Frontiers amps, and Audio Research gears of good resolution.

Just a comment to see if anyone has a similar problem. I have the same Marantz CD player... once in a while it spins but refuses to recognize that a disc is inserted... it makes a slight but unusual whirring sound as it spins the disk but fails to recognize the disk... if I open and close the tray after about 5 attempts it does recognize the disk but the odd mechanical whirring sound is still heard slightly if you turn down the amp... then after about 5 minutes it is back to normal and plays well and the mechanical whirring sound is GONE !! Then the same disk, or any other can be used, and it plays well every time with no odd mechanical whirring sound coming from the drive... it is odd because after the first CD plays I could play 10 more with no issues at all... it seems that it almost has to WARM UP to play well. So far I have found that if I simply leave the power on all the time... IT WORKS PERFECTLY. It just does not want to start up from cold. I have noticed that it works well in the summer heat with no issues, but in colder damp weather I have to leave the power on all the time... or the very first disc is difficult to play... after the first one plays... no problem for subsequent CDs. Strange... any ideas ?
@norcal7153 жыл бұрын
Maybe a failing capacitor but more likely a bad laser diode. It can't make the required power until it is warmed up. Try heating just the laser assembly when the rest if the unit is cold. Also try heating various parts when cold to see if you can pinpoint the issue.

I hate Marantz except the old Receivers. My expensive Marantz Cd Recorder was crap from the first day on. Remote control not ergonomic, Speed inexistent at playing, long response no matter what you push. Menu like a Samsung, illogic. It’s not a Kenwood. The knobs are disgusting. Philips is the same and less expensive as you do not pay the brand Marantz. 1000 Usd for a Marantz Cd recorder which does not give any spin. Iwon’t pay 150 Usdd for a repair of the laser unit. Perhaps I’ll post amy first video on my channel where I take a big hammer until it is falling in pieces. Who pays more than 50 Usd for a wrecked CDR-6000. What did they ever do good after the mid 80’s? Amplifiers, CD Players? the answer is: nothing.
