In the novel, Doc stands close to Szell because he's worried about sniper cover. Snipers wouldn't take him out for fear of hitting Szell. But Szell uses this to his advantage when he uses his spring-loaded knife

Would it have made any difference if Scheider had told Olivier's character that his agency wanted Schell safely out of the country with his diamonds, so he could continue to be useful to them? Whether this was true or not, should Doc have played his cards closer to his chest? Schell seems to still be interested in some re-assurance, so he hasn't already decided to murder Doc when they meet.

@johnhein25393 жыл бұрын
I buy it. If you see the rest of the film there is a hidden engineered knife sleeve contraption. Think Assassin's Creed. All Szell had to do was casually have his arm in front of himself in a harmless "please can't I trust you?" gesture, about 4 inches from Roy's stomach, when the blade is, say 6 inches long. Szell also already strategically established himself in this meeting as a frail old man who can't take a slap all to lower Doc's guard. That one second surprise was all he needed, like anyone with a gun, really.

@@johnhein2539 Exactly - it was totally believable the sly, evil old man got the better of the younger more vigorous one - that's what gave this scene its horrific power. @@joemadden4160 I don't think that's quite right. Doc is obviously fast with his hands. IIRC, the book mentions that he sees a flash of something, and he's in the process of moving into a defensive position but one of Szell's henchmen grab his arm, for ju7st a split second, just long enough to delay Doc's defensive maneuver and let Szell get the blade in. The film doesn't go to that extreme, but since Doc has no idea Szell is sporting the contraption, and believes him to be frail, he's not paying attention to what's going on below him until Szell stabs him.
