Got a place in London Marathon on the day I completed 500 days in a row of running every day. Thankfully they are refunding me for the Virtual London Marathon this year so I don't have to run two! There was a high chance that my virtual London Marathon would have been somewhat close to the official route!
@hairyairey3 жыл бұрын
Just a correction "you're nearly there" being shouted to you at the start of a marathon is entirely correct. You've spent months training all the hard work is behind you. People really should look at it this way, it'll certainly help the nerves!
@regstoy3 жыл бұрын
For those of you doing your first Marathon, do not, I repeat do not wear earphones. You may have trained with music or podcasts, but you will miss out on the chats with fellow runners and the noise of the crowd. Interact and take energy from everybody around you, fistpump with the kids (they'll be delighted and you'll feed off their energy) and read all of the handmade posters (some will make you laugh, others will make you teary but they'll all give you a kick). Finally, don't fixate on your finish time, you did the training and hopefully know if the time is achievable, enjoy the whole experience and hopefully you'll be able to hug a fellow finisher at the finish because you will have shared something rather special.

Hmm, I disagree slightly. If you train with headphones definitely take them on race day in case you need them. When I did London I was injured and needed to zone out from the crowds but had the “you don’t need headphones” going round in my head so refused to put them in. A couple of miles like that would have done me the world of good. My own fault but I think if people train with them they should take them in case they need them.

Great video. I've 3 marathon this year, 6 completed to date. My tip is to not do loops past your home on long Sunday runs. It's too temping to stop and that inner voice always tries to find a reason why I should stop. Especially on those cold, rainy mornings.

Conversely, if you can battle that will to stop, it becomes a mental toughness challenge, which is great for those last few kms. I do both, runs where I have to learn to fight the urge to quit and long out and back runs, where the only way home is to keep running. I use a Salomon vest and find 1lt is enough for 30kms or so.

I’m doing the Virtual London Marathon in October following an afternoon of spring madness. My first proper organised race will be a half in Bristol this coming September 2021. I’ve never ran with anyone before so I have no idea what I’m letting myself in for. In August 2020 I couldn’t run 30 seconds, but I did it. In October 2020 I ran my first 5K and I did it. By March 2021 I had worked to a half marathon distance and it nearly killed me, but I did it. By June 2021 I’m up to 20 miles in one go every 3 weeks and increasing my weekly mileage generally. Great vid. Lots of practical advice. I have several marathons booked for 2021.My favourites are road events: tree roots, ruts, rabbit holes etc don't agree with this middle aged man. Training - speed work. Run a 'real' 5k, 10k, half whatever. Find a race to get the competitive genes working! Also good for practising the whole race day experience. Food, drink, toilet needs(!), running shoes, arriving at the event in time.. A few other thoughts about training. Stamina and strength - There are now numerous off road LAP events. 6, 8 whatever hours on a 3, 4, whatever mile lap to do as many as you wish. Good for hills, having a realistic goal without overdoing it, no pressure about finishing when you wish to, you can stop and start whenever you wish, kind of competitive because there is the buzz of the event - other runners, often teams at start finish point - but not competive in racing anyone with the danger of pushing yourself too much in what is a means to an end - marathon day - not an end in itself. Happy running!

I am training for my second marathon end of October . I hope it will not get canceled in which case I will run virtual one. My training tip would be really all you said in the video but also on race day during the run when I get towards hard kilometers on my mind which start to happen around 30 to 32 km I start to think to my self ‘ you must run until 50 km you have time. Just easy. ‘ and I am not thinking that I must run ‘ only’ 12 km more. Then when I get to 42km its suddenly over! And happiness overwhelms the whole world!

I’m considering running a marathon but I know that right now I would injure myself if I did. I’ve ran several half marathons at sub 2h, the last one I felt quite good and did my PB, but a marathon is an entirely different beast. I currently run 3 to 4 times a week and 35 to 40 Km, I estimate that I should be able to run at least 75 Km a week, that means a 35 Km long run (on top of swimming and cycling). Building to that mileage requires a lot of time if you increase it progressively, and I’m not going to rush with this, I’d rather wait another year than risk injuring and having to stop running altogether.

I was in the same position as you when I did my first! 26.22 is definitely a huge step up from a half. During the race, I was happy with my first 20 miles... and then the last 10K I fell apart and limp-ran to the finish. Trying for redemption in my 2nd marathon in two months! [I did do a virtual marathon in Feb, and that definitely felt better than my 1st]

@@tsubakichan That's what I want to avoid 😀 , I want to be able to run from start to finish without dying 🙂 . In my last half marathon I did a negative pacing, starting slower and finishing faster, that worked very well, started at about 6m30s/Km and finished sub 5m00s/Km, I wonder if that will work for a marathon.
@tsubakichan3 жыл бұрын
@@iggalan Yeah, two things I learned from my first and you hit upon one of them: 1. I went out too hard 1st half which felt fine at the time... but probably led to my collapse at the last 25%. 2. Salt tabs? My muscles were seizing up and I've heard that it's a symptom of not having enough sodium once you sweat it out. I did a virtual full early in Feb where I paced myself better throughout and had some salt in the last half of the race and it was a much better experience and faster time despite me not trying to push for a "fake race" - did run/walk mix to a 4:14 time.

Me, I’m doing 2 half marathons and 7 marathons in 9 weeks between September 12 (starting with the Amish Country Half Marathon) and ending on November 13 (Bobcat). The marathons are Air Force Akron Chicago Detroit Cleveland MCM Bobcat That’s in addition to 5 5Ks, 2 10Ks and 7 races of other distances. Should be a busy and active fall season for me.

4 days ago I ran my first Marathon I’m in Australia we were due to run on the Gold Coast Queensland but the race got canceled 4 days out from the run. We had all trained so hard and Decided to run a lap 21.1course around town. 6 of us did the Marathon and over 20 runners did the 1/2 marathon. It still makes me tears to think about how many people come out to support us. It’s the the hardest most painful thinking I have ever done but I loved it and will be doing other Marathon next year hoping to do it on the Gold Coast. My family and running family are awesome. I even patted a dog and thought of Anna. Thankyou to Running Channel for sharing all the tips and tricks. ❤️

Attempting my second marathon this year, first was London 2019. Doing the Virtual London Marathon this time on a treadmill as I’m shielding with my partner who is highly vulnerable. I’m 4 weeks into a 16 week training plan, so with the runs getting longer, the test is training the mind along with the body, I’m using Zwift but also hope to have music, podcasts and potentially some phone calls during the event as there will be none of the street side cheering. We’ll see how it goes!
