Astounding. The cadenza is simply unbelivable. It appears that in his hands nothing is imposible.

This is the greatest feat of pianistic art ever. The cadenza is such a gift of creativity, effort and achievement. Both the piano and the house should explode upon the last note.

For the longest time, I considered Billy Joel the greatest piano player ever. But seeing this video, I think I've changed my mind. And in my opinion, this is the best playing of Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 available on KZbin. Everything is just perfect, and the cadenza (which he himself wrote!) is simply amazing.

The brilliance behind Hamelin is in his interpretation. You always get something unique and often controversial amongst the purists. That is why he is so successful. That is why so many who think Liszt should be played a certain way don't care for his interpretation. He is not afraid to break the rules, and this simply makes him much more versatile and, in my opinion, genius!

Simply amazing and probably one of the most difficult to play. The people who can play this level is a master.
@KronosCodename14 жыл бұрын
My words cannot express the talent of this insane. The magnitude of the way he plays a very simbolic and historic piece as the Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2 from a very renomated erudite composer Franz Liszt, is completely unimaginable and unbelievable. Although looks - maybe can be - insane, he is - no doubt about that - a perfect pianist, that certainly has successfuly reached the excelence.

Anybody wanting to watch a brilliant interpretation of Liszt's HR2 will really enjoy this amazing video. Anyone who like's to see a contrast as to how difficult actually playing this is piece needs only watch Jung Lin struggle with the mechanics of the tempo. Her child-like arpeggiating makes a person appreciate how tremendously difficult this piece is to play well.
@DrewOchsner15 жыл бұрын
Best version on youtube. Hamelin exemplifies true virtuosity (regardless of the 'off-note' at 6:22). The cadenza at the end is a nice bonus too!

His virtuosity and technical prowess usually headlines the show but I'm consistently impressed by his musicality and the depth of his understanding of the works. When you have his technique it would easy to fall back on that, but he never does. Is MAH the best pianist alive? Show me he isn't.

Hello again! I`ve seen Hamelin few weeks ago here in germany live! it was totaly amazing,he played berg,a liszt sonata,debussy and some of his own etudes. I saw Brendel,Kissin 4-5 times ,Hamelin and many more.Kissin and Hamelin are an own league at the moment ,they are my heros ;) The easyness in boths playing on the most difficult pieces is crazy

Good point, Scienceandmusic. Music is an art, not an athletic competition. It's not like there's one "best" at everything. I just admire Hamelin for many reasons, the chief of which is the fact that he doesn't just record warhorses for big record labels. He really seems to specialize in "eccentric" and often more obscure pieces. I'm also impressed that he lets his virtiousity server the music instead of the other way around.

It has been a historic musical tradition to improvise. Mendelssohn himself improvised a cadenza in a Bach concerto with octaves. I say bravo, Hamelin brought fresh life to this gem of a piece.

I really dont know how people can say that he doen`t developpe enough feelings in his playing.He is able to controle every tune and shows complete new aspects in this piece which no other pianist is able to show. ok,yeah,cadenza..not full of emotions...but you all know the meaning of cadenza like it was used at the time of Liszt &co?I think not...it ONLY exists to show the induvidual _technical_ skill of the performing pianist

@Axotrotl It's called a cadenza, a passage for the pianist to showcase his virtuosity. Liszt peppered his compositions with these cadenzas, with instructions to the pianist to compose his/her own cadenza. So yeah, this is Hamelin's version. A damn good one too.

I agree zinutile. Some people need mistakes or at least imperfection in a performance or a performance artist to see interpretation. Probably why popular music is what it is today. The point of art isn't to be technically superior, or flashy, it's about the soul and and emotion that goes into, and there is no perfection in that. Small minds aim for perfection, a genius know that there's no such thing.
