This was a song that kept me going while I was waiting for my son to be born. I was stationed in Korea at the time and my family was in Colorado. Sadly, I lost him after he turned 20 years old from an illness. I never got to see him have a son of his own. This is a bitter-sweet song now.... the memories of thinking "what will be" mixed with the grief brought on by "what could have been".

this song means so much to me. it was written 2 years before my mom became unexpectedly pregnant with me. when it came out my great uncle who i was named for was dying and my dad told him that he didn't know what yet- but he was going to do something for him. then he heard this song and thought of all that my great-uncle should be "handing down" but because he had no children he wouldn't. and then, almost 3 years later- i was named for my great uncle and all he handed down.

We had True Companion played at our wedding in '93 and has remianed a favourite, then we fell in love with this one after we fell pregnant with our first child. Sadly, we lost Joshua at 21 weeks...we were privileged to hold him for a short time after he was delivered, and we played this song at his funeral. A beautiful song with amazing words - and yes, 16 years later I still tear up as I sing it often or listen to it...thanks Marc...

This man is one of the finest singers/song wrirters /musicians to create music that combines the best elements of heart, mind and soul. Not a day goes by I don't play his songs because they raise my spirits and touch my heart in the nicest of ways. Let's face it-- the guy had me with "Walking In Memphis," and it opened the door to his incredible music. Thank you from the heart, Marc, for all your beautiful musical gifts.

"Don't know much about you Don't know who you are We've been doing fine without you But, we could only go so far Don't know why you chose us Were you watching from above Is there someone there that knows us Said we'd give you all our love Will you laugh just like your mother Will you sigh like your old man Will some things skip a generation Like I've heard they often can Are you a poet or a dancer A devil or a clown Or a strange new combination of The things we've handed down I wonder who you'll look like Will your hair fall down and curl Will you be a mama's boy Or daddy's little girl Will you be a sad reminder Of what's been lost along the way Maybe you can help me find her In the things you do and say And these things that we have given you They are not so easily found But you can thank us later For the things we've handed down You may not always be so grateful For the way that you were made Some feature of your father's That you'd gladly sell or trade And one day you may look at us And say that you were cursed But over time that line has been Extremely well rehearsed By our fathers, and their fathers In some old and distant town From places no one here remembers Come the things we've handed down" (c) Marc Cohn

Heard this when I was about 14 for the first time and it spurred me into taking songwriting seriously, just because of how beautifully written it is. Never do covers on KZbin, but I made an exception this week, been one of my favourites for years. Obviously nowhere as good as the man himself, but I gave it a go. Let me know what ye think! If ye'd be so kind ;) Obviously can't post a link, but it's easy to find on my channel (: Nx
