Ok still in college, company X flew me down from Iowa to Memphis and we ate at Elvis Presley's on Beale St. I got bored and walked out onto Beale watching the white horses pulling white carriages and looking down the street at Hard Rock and Roll Cafe... but across the street there was a crowd and so I crawled into the window not paying any attention to what I was doing. I climbed up into the window, grabbed the satchel, leaned back and looked up, "BB King's" I look on stage... BB King! Absolute true story! If you are from Memphis, you know the sights and so you know I'm not BS'n. I still have Marc's CD, Played "True Companion" for my first wife at our wedding... Cheesy but GREAT song...

This song is so powerful. So full of examples of how an experience can change our lives. If you know the story of how Marc Cohn wrote this song, you know that he was going thru a terrible time in his life. In the song he describes the meeting with Murelle at the Hollywood Cafe, as a life changing experience. How she ignited a spark within him that changed his life, and his love of music. One line in the song, I feel, completely sums up his feelings at the time. "Touched down in the land of the Delta blues, in the middle of the pouring rain". He's been invited to this place. The heart and soul of real music. He arrives with hope but is still carrying the storm of despair (pouring rain), when this beautiful soulful woman touches his life, which puts him on an incredible life revival. We never know how much a simple act of love, might change a person's life.

I was a very little girl driving home with my family thru Memphis right when Elvis died. And yes, it was POURING rain. I’ll never forget it, headlights as far as you could see in both directions, going to send off the king. Crazy.

oh i love this song, As an Aussie from a blue collar family, i never pictured id go overseas as a kid but in mid 2001, i was walking in Memphis, and i went to Beale street and drank a cocktail or two and listened to bands and we drove from Memphis to California, stopping to do stuff along the way like standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona (Eagles - Take it easy) this song always takes me back to my first trip overseas the America and since been back and other places :) Til covid 19 :(

"WC Handy won't you look down over me" So good. WC Handy is the father of the blues, Marc knew he needed some divine assistance to go to Memphis to play at a black church and do them proud. This is my favorite song of all time, and frankly it isn't close.

Like all great music it hints at his real life. He was just starting out and struggling he knew that the music was in him he just couldn't get it out. He went to Memphis in hopes that he could get inspired he went to a church service where Reverend Al Green was preaching the Al Green the famous singer. He went to a little place called The Hollywood Cafe where they had really great catfish. There was a school teacher in her late sixties that was playing piano at the cafe and singing gospel music. He says he wasn't sure why but he was just drawn to her. They sat together and they talked and he opened up to her about his life and his struggles and what he was trying to do with his music career. She invited him up on stage to sing with her. Her name was Muriel Davis Wilkins. But with him being a young Jewish man he didn't know a lot of gospel songs. The last song they sang was amazing Grace he did know that song so they sang it together, and that is where the part of the song comes in where she asks him are you a Christian child and he says ma'am I am tonight. His visit to Beale Street and his visit with Miss Muriel is what gave him his inspiration and got him through the block that he was in and he wrote the entire album in 7 months.

I saw your face go blank when the Jungle Room at Graceland was mentioned. The Jungle Room was originally the TV room. Elvis' girlfriend, Linda Thompson, helped him redecorate it in a jungle theme back in the mid-70's, with green shag carpet going up the walls.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song. I live a couple hrs East of Memphis and I went to college at the University of Memphis. Every time I hear this song it's like a movie playing in my head. I wish I could describe how it makes me feel, but it's so complicated. I feel hopeful, nostalgic, proud, and a bit sad, and more that I can't put a finger on.

I don't think I've ever been through Memphis (unless it was just catching a connection in the airport, and that hardly counts) and I'm not even the hugest fan of Elvis, but dang I do love this song! And yeah, the piano does SO much for setting the mood. It evokes the feel of rain, and lends the whole piece a sense of nostalgia, even if it's for something that the listener has never experienced. It's been a favorite song of mine for some while now, and I'm glad you got to listen to it and enjoyed it as well.

Many people think it was a tribute to Elvis. Actually, Marc was experiencing writers block as well as other things going on in his life. So, he went down to Memphis and found inspiration through his experiences there and that included WC Handy (blues legend) as well as Elvis and others like Muriel who inspired him when he came in and played and sang many hymns with her. Lots of great inspiration for this song. It actually made him a big music star after writing this.

I think this song has a beautiful meaning. Fisrt of all Marc, as a musitian, makes references to going to Memphis 'cause theres the Delta Blues (which is one of the 1st blues type of music), then he reffers to W.C. Handy, who was a composer and musician who was one of the most influential blues songwriters. He also reffers to Beale Street, wich is the location of the heart of music in Memphis. He said he was as blue as a boy could be, so a trip to Memphis provided him Joy by finding God in music!! A big hug from México City 🙂 Btw.. Ps. Hopefully one day you'll react to this Mr Mr Song that is so famous.. Lyrics are AWESOME!! ( Kyrie Eleoson = God have mercy) kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3-nm6dqe995jbs Kyrie Eleison down the road that I must travel Kyrie Eleison through the darkness of the night Kyrie Eleison where I'm going, will you follow?
