What a wonderful tribute to the treasured pianist! I was privileged to know Grigory, Grisha, as a friend, just a few years, after he won in the 3rd Tchaikovsky competition. I always got tickets from himself to his concerts in StPetersburg. Even though he was already a celebrity, he was still a down to earth young man. Yet he knew, what he wanted in his life and how to get it. Being a hard worker( he played piano for 10 hrs daily), he also found time for his parents, friends and his car. O, he loved his car, and knew its mechanics. In my conversations with him during our day car trips to the beautiful places outside of StPetersburg, we touched many subjects, including his plans for future and handling his fame. That fame certainly didn’t get into his head. I lost touch with Grigory when I left Russia, but never stopped following his concert life. He grew immensely in his artistic skills, matured and captured love and admiration of many around the world. And I’m happy, I still can hear him, although I couldn’t attend his life concerts and shake his hand after.

I play Chopin, Liszt, Schumann, Bach and Rachmaninoff like nothing you'll have ever heard, and have my own tone, unique only to me. Schubert, Beethoven, Scarlatti and Rameau are old friends. @@jeremyd1021 I don't know about that. After listening to Sofronitsky, Gilels, or Richter, I find myself coming back to Sokolov's wholehearted love letters to Brahms, Chopin, and Schumann (please record more). I found Lugansky after him, and despite both being incredible (the best alive, in my opinion) I've now only found myself listening to Sokolov. His pianism evolved around his personal style, where (I guess obviously) his patience opens doors to new beauty in Russian tone and the music. A Yakov Flier or a Maria Grinberg? I think not. Rachmaninoff had his own unique pianism as well. I think there are those who seek excellence in textbook pianism such as Richter and Gilels, and then there are those who tread their own path like Sokolov. He might be 5th or 6th, but he's not an "also ran."

Everything Schumann writes in this work (excerpts taken from and taken up in other works, album sheets, sketches of movements ...) is gold under the ashes; Sokolov, as an unparalleled pianist, turns it into platinum. It is a work that is rarely performed also because it is little understood, not having a precise structure like the Sonatas or suites of pieces like Carnaval or Kreisleriana; it really intimately reflects Schumann's soul, fiery, passionate and introspective at the same time.

Genius. Sokolov endows every moment with it's maximal significance. His tone is utterly remarkable - just listen to those mercurial high notes at 1:50. And his rubato! Has there ever been such a marriage of imagination and technique? Equalled perhaps, but never surpassed. The Marsch Sehr Getragen, arguably the heart of the set (and tonally, a kind of inverted 'raindrop prelude') is at 19:03 (for those interested). And doesn't the Geschwindmarsch (39:08) sound just like one of Prokofiev's Sarcasms?! spikey asf. Thanks for posting!!!

Sokolov was never a genius. His game is at its best manner. Never trust Sokolov like Horowitz or Gulda. Sokolov makes a constructor out of music. The slow episodes in his performance are devoid of genuine sincerity.

@@SKNSV Well Emil Gilels personally intervened on Sokolov's behalf at the 1966 Tchaikovsky competition. And Trifonov writes: "Grigory Sokolov is a musical figure of intense magnitude, and one whose concerts are always awaited with great anticipation. Attending his performances, one may have the sensation of the sound possessing a nearly physical essence; it fills the entire concert hall with rare energy and lives in its own time sphere. Sokolov is a great example for young pianists of how much one can seek and find in a piece of music, and in so doing, elevate the listener above the mundane with it."
