Actually, I would argue the opposite. Teenagers are volatile. They change emotions frequently, they feel lot of things they don't know how to express. I've seen kids act this angry and i've seen adults act this angry, but to play a teenager you really have to explore the internal part of the character. Teenagers are full of this inner anger, this self-blaming, the feeling of "I don't know where I belong yet". And those are all internal feelings, not out screaming, shouting and punching the air. This one note acting "AAANGRY MAAAD... BUT NOW HOPEFULL TO END THE SONG"... that's not a teenager hahahaha. A teenager understands self blame!

He should show way more emotion than just that anger. Watch other actors singin this song in stage and you'll see other range of emotions that are not just punches in the air.

i think its really important to remember he's playing a 17 year old. as a 17 year old this is, in my mind, such a beautiful depiction of the constant, drastically different, juxtaposing emotions that teenagers deal with

While I agree that there are some choices that border on overacting here, I think context is important. In multiple interviews surrounding the release of the filmed version from which this was taken, it was said that he had to perform Santa Fe eight consecutive times, with his voice being completely gone by the end. The close-up shots were filmed when there wasn't a live audience. And, he hadn't performed in the role for 4-5 years before stepping in with a much more abbreviated rehearsal than most of the cast had. With those things in mind, I think the performance that they chose to put into the filmed version can be forgiven a bit. To perform such a pivotal point and the most vocally taxing part in the show 8 times in a row, without an audience present to give their normal feedback, and without having performed it in a long time I can see why his performance reads as inconsistent. If you watch a bootleg of him as Jack during the Broadway run, his choices are much more subtle and would probably be more your cup of tea. I do think he does too much sometimes, but his performance as Jack in the bootleg helped me to fall in love with the musical that I thought I hated.

I saw him in the role at Paper Mill Playhouse pre-Broadway and then again when it was on Broadway another three times. I think when he was actively in the role, it was much better than the filmed version - but I still enjoy it! Also I'm an obsessive fan of the movie -- and I'd still rather watch that over the stage version. Some of the changes were not my cup of tea.

I feel like this is just Jack feeling like he's loosing control of everything and getting angry at everything and everyone. Like a teenager would. I know that I used to be angry and mad at the world for anything and everything so to me, it makes sense that in his situation, Jack would just want to yell and scream that life is unfaire and that he wants to get out of New York. But I get that some would see it as overacting. On an unrelated note, I know it's a french musical but I would love to see you react to Danse mon Esmeralda from the original distribution of Notre Dame de Paris from 1998. There's a video of it with english subtitles somewhere on youtube if that helps with the lyrics and everything. That song is, to me, one of the most heartbreaking and beautiful song ever written and performed. It's the actor's first role ever (he was singing blues and jazz prior to that). Would love to hear your commentary on that performance and also maybe hear your thoughts on if you think, and if so how, a performance can transcend language. It's the last song of the show and I think it's one that truly stays with you love after you've seen it performed.

Just wanted to chime in and say I absolutely love Notre Dame de Paris! So many fantastic songs within the show, and "Danse mon Esmeralda" is definitely one to hear! (My other favorites are "Belle" and "Tu vas me détruire")

I’m so glad you reacted to this. Of the comments I’ve heard and read, people don’t like him simply because he acts angry or depressed either singing or talking. There’s nothing in between or no other emotion. Your praise of his vocal range and explanation of the complexities of acting out and singing angry emotions really helps.

Just because theatre is "his life" doesn't mean he can feel every emotion. The soundtrack version is more muted like he is wanting and, you know what? I feel nothing when I listen to it, yet as I said before, I will cry like a baby every time I watch this 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@Debbie76 He can feel emotions. What I mean by “theater is his life” is that he could go in any direction with it. Preferably method. Method acting is probably the best one in this situation. To use that with singing is not always easy nor difficult; it depends on the person using the skills. He very well could have achieved it. And what you’re describing is somewhat of a good example. A soundtrack album is more muted, in a sound stage. The actor is not performing in front of a live audience, so he’s not giving it his all. Watching it - you can hear the pain, the anger, the anguish, and at the same time, you can see it in his face. It doesn’t always translate, but it’s there and you can sense it.

Exactly, you can hear and see how the character is feeling in this video which is why I don't think the reactor saying that JJ doesn't understand the character and should tone parts down is right. Definitely. This version was very different from his portrayal on Broadway. I imagine after singing a song 7 or 10 times in a row, it is a lot harder to get into that headspace. And I imagine that the director and editor deliberately chose the overly angry take. They could have chosen more vulnerable ones and didn’t

I also had to add that he is doing this for the big screen so the camera is all up in his face, but he is used to overexaggerating the acting because the viewer can be at the back of the theatre. And what complicates it more, is the camera is in his face for the movie filming but they performed it live for a live audience on the last day. So it seems that the actors are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

I saw him perform this during the shows original 12 week run on Broadway before it was extended. His vocals are amazing no matter what, but I do agree it’s a bit overacted here and it was not the case when I saw him perform the song on Broadway. It was such a magical experience seeing him and the whole original cast. One of my fondest memories from musical theatre.

It really sucks that you picked that one line to talk about overacting. I definitely agree that there is some overacting and sometimes it pulls me out and gets me frustrated, but the line "denying me my pay" is one that hits me in the gut every time specifically because of the way he sings it. I know it's external vs internal subjects to place blame, but I think that's why it works. He's angry at himself and has a strong reaction because he can do better and do something about it. At this point in the show, not being paid is set in stone. They haven't thought of the union yet. He's not angry about that, he's desperate and terrified. He gets quiet because he thinks he's powerless.

This is the song he sings after the 1st strike they organised as the Union doesn't turn out how he'd hoped and they were all beaten by both the goons and the cops, adding in that he's frustrated and angry that he wasn't able to save Crutchie, it all feels hopeless to him. I do agree with your comments on how the song was sung though, I cry every time at the desperation and helplessness in his voice

The thing that is always said when acting on stage is that the audience will not be able to see small expressions so you must over exaggerate them in order for the audience to know what’s going on. Since this is a live show I understand where his acting choice came from.

So interesting story for me about this song - a few years ago, had to take in my niece and nephew for a few weeks because my brother had to have surgery and there mom was not an option for reasons I won't really get into. I decided to watch this show with my niece, since she was starting to get into musical theater. My nephew came back from school right as this song started and was immediately mocking his sister for watching musicals. At the time, he was your typical angry 17yo teen going through a really rough time in life. But on Jeremy's second "and I'm done", he actually stopped and sat down through this song. As soon as it was over, he asked if we could replay it. He cried the second time through. He said much later that night that he'd never had a song that summed up how lost and angry he'd felt at that moment. It just stuck with me that this performance resonated with an actual 17 year old teenager who just wanted to drop everything and go.

I was fortunate to see Jeremy in Newsies years ago. Got discounted tickets, first row where we experienced plenty of sweat and spit. For me the production was the choreography and high energy. We (4 of us) were unexpectedly blown away. I love the melody of Santa Fe. I find it beautifully lyrical as it crescendos to its apex. I'll tell you...Jeremy brought the house down with his voice and good looks. I did feel, at times, that his acting was a bit forced and it made me uncomfortable. However, the more stage presence Jeremy had, the more comfortable I became. Maybe, I thought, this is an unapologetic, macho-ish New Yorker who doesn't give a crap. So, that's what I accepted, m. Thanks for the memories Marc.

The show on a whole definitely lives up to its ticket price (well, not discounted ones :p) Which is why I made sure to mention at the opening of the video, Newsies is a show that relies on its entire cast - and doesn't lean that heavily on its main players to make it memorable or impactful.

This was a different version than the live show and he didn't know which version would be in the pro-shot. He admitted it in a clip (you can watch it in Making of Newsies, a fan movie) and he explained that he had to sing it over and over again so his voice was shot by the end and he was extremely tired. He also got less rehearsal time as he was in the middle of filming Supergirl. It had also been about five years since he had played Jack. If you find a live bootleg, it sounds 100% different and a bit more 'clean'

I don’t think it’s so much an anger that he’s showing as it is a fear or a feeling of being trapped. To me, his choices are reminiscent of an abused dog locked inside a cage. Perhaps one thing with the start being less focused inward and more in the second part of the song is that he’s literally just left the fight and seen Crutchy and the rest of his friends being beaten so his emotions are all over the place. Then the switch is at the couple of bars were he gets to take a break. For something Like Empty chairs at Empty Tables you can feel that Marius has had some time to reflect, think through his emotions and think about what to say so it’s more focused inward.

I see someone, below, has had a similar thought. Just for the fun of it, take a look at Christian Bale doing the song at the age of 19 in the original movie. Bale is not a singer and has nowhere near the vocal chops of Jeremy Jordan but, for my money, he brings it across as Jack in a much more successful way.

Same I actually prefer the movie over the Broadway production even if Christian Bales voice isn’t that amazing just because all the acting performances are so on point. I feel like the movie has more nuance

I absolutely love your breakdown of this. And I personally agree that he overacts, but I really enjoyed his performance in the song “Maria,” when he performed as Tony in West Side Story. His vocals are flawless as usual, but the way he performed the lyrics and his love for Maria I thought was beautiful and nuanced and passionate. You should definitely give that a watch! I would love to see what you think about it.

I completely agree with the overacting bit. In the few roles that I’ve seen Jeremy play, I’ve always had this feeling that he tries to make it a bit too obvious, especially the scenes where there’s anger involved. Still, he has an incredible voice and I’m always amazed when I hear him sing.

I actually dont really mind the overacring parts. Cause I know some people who who actually wouldnr get the emotions if he didnt overact it. Sounds dumb but thats actually true XD And I myself am not really an emotional person so, maybe it sounds dumb, but the overacting makes me more emotional. When someones just angry I would be "Aight hes mad." and not really care about why or what hes feeling like. The overacting actually helps me to realize those emotions. But thats just personal stuff and personal opinion.

I love what you do, and this is a great example. I just want you to do it to the historical layers of musical theatre. Whatever you see and critique here came on the shoulders of a rich history. There was a day where these vocal and acting choices came from a rather different skill set. Explore the past when there was a full orchestra pit, and less amplification. When projecting the human voice defined the performance options. When racial and gender boundaries defined the entire experience, and when an offering called When Thousands Cheer represented the first billing of a Black musical theatre talent in a mixed race production , There was a Richard Kiley before Jeramy Jordan, a Zero Mostel before a Jonathon Groff, Barbara Cook before there was a Kristen Chenowith, and an Ethel Merman before a Patty Lapone and they are all represented on You tube, and you can teach using all of it. Nobody is looking at what Carol Channing was able to do with a restricted untrained vocal range, and the most expressive face in musical comedy history. So you take a crack at it!

I definitely agree with your opinion on this. I kind of cringe every time I watch it as it’s so one note mad. There’s no layers. Especially as a teenager, he should be feeling and thinking about so much more.

Couldn’t agree more - vocally just an absolute power house 🤯 The acting aspects in the first half, particularly of this version, is kind of “too much” in its almost constant frothing at the mouth rage, when there’s some subtle nuances in the actual lyric narrative. Really enjoyed this one, great notes and it’s a recent new favourite song and undeniable vocal crush on JJ (again, wow, the pipes)

Jeremy is a great singer who acts... I usually prefer actors who sing! Like Judy Dench singing Send In The Clowns (in BBC Proms 2010). Sitting down, barely singing, but a true masterclass on how to act a song, on how to feel every single verse while making every single word understandable. You should react to it!! Truly breathtaking!

I’m a musical theatre student and they actually showed us that performance just so we would see that being an amazing singer is not enough and understanding the song is way more important. Such a great performance 🤩

I know that you aren’t the biggest jeremy jordan fan because of the overacting, however there is a song he performs that called “prepared” that is super poignant and moving. It’s about the death of a sick loved one and how you are never truly prepared for that loss. As far as I can remember there isn’t any overacting. Anyways the real reason I’m recommending it is because I feel like no one talks about it and it’s an amazing song and performance. Sorry for such a long post.
