Saw today’s performance. Went in with pretty low expectations based on videos and reviews. Wow, Lea can SING. It was like watching someone’s lifelong dream come true in real time. Really special to see something like that live.

Was not a Lea Michele nor Glee fan but I did walk into the theater thinking it would be good. At worst, I thought well Ramin is here so whatever shortcomings the show might have it would still be good to watch him perform again. But omg, Lea really made this role her own. She was breathtaking. I too was bothered by the relentless cheering and how you had to strain to hear the final notes because of the enthusiasm of the audience but I also have to admit it made for an exceptional night at the theater. It was like witnessing the stars align and as you said not something I'll ever see again in my lifetime.

She was amazing, when I watched that video I wasn't expecting to get emotional but she actually broke my heart. I believe her pain and getting up again. And this is a video, out of context, I can't IMAGINE what it must be to watch the full story, seeing her live and feeding from the audience energy. Those amazing reviews make 100% sense to me after watching that performance.

This young woman can SING! Liking or not liking a voice is kind of odd in this case. Her tone, range, power is all on point with the slight nasal quality of Streisand. It's beautiful. Are people reacting to her Glee character or her actual performance here? She is a phenomenal singer. 😍

Act 1 and 2 were never ending with Beanie, then I went to see LEA (DIVAS with CAPS) and LEA was a force of nature. The show was never boring with this new leading lady, even act 2 went by fast. The music that makes me dance was thrilling and I'd rather be blue both in act 2.

I was there opening night and, as I watch this again, it reminds me of "Rose's Turn" in "Gypsy." It's the "11 o'clock number" and brings the heroine to an emotional climax. Both are women consumed by ambition and driven to succeed. In Rose, it opens up a well of anger and frustration. Patti Lupone turned that into an almost psychotic breakdown. In Fanny, it forces her to return to her own drive to overcome every obstacle. She won't let Nick take her down. Both heroines follow an emotional arc. They are different people by the end of their songs. Rose has purged herself of her frustrated ambitions and can accept her daughter's success. Fanny has faced her greatest fear of being unloved and come out stronger. In 20 years, Lea will make a great Rose.

Having seen it IRL, wow did she deliver this scene (and all the other ones) because she belts it in the first act I really didn't mind and was surprised at how much she got me to feel...let's remember Spring Awakening was heavy lifting too. It's kind of an abrupt tonal shift but she really pulls it off. I was lucky enough to see it with an audience that didn't interrupt her singing with applause and I came in with super high expectations and was not disappointed. Normally I am looking at everyone in the cast but it was really hard to take my eyes off of her in every scene even though Tovah, Ramin, and Jared were all incredible too.

Audiences getting excited over a particular artist and song is nothing new. For example, Jennifer Holiday singing "And I'm Telling You..." had audiences roaring and cheering throughout the song during Dreamgirls all the time because the audience is very emotionally invested at that moment. And the same can be said for those who love and cheer Michele. I will say that having seen it with Beanie over the summer, the audience I saw it with was not as excitable as those watching Lea.

It would be great to capture Ramin's performance on video. He is, as always, pure magic in Funny Girl. His voice soars and he plays a fantastic Nicky! I saw him with both Beanie and Lea and he was steady and charismatic in both performances. With Beanie his numbers were my favorite and Act 2 was better for me due to his storyline. With Lea, his star dims as, impossible as I thought it could be, she far outshines him. Their duets together are good; they have the juice! The audience yesterday was beyond enthusiastic and the cheering cut into most numbers but honestly how can you blame us when we are witnessing Broadway history. The videos don't do justice to Lea's performance in person.

I have never seen not even one episode of Glee. I had no idea who this woman is. I thought her interpretation of this piece - extraordinary. It seems that she had to do the same as when Lansbury stepped into the shoes of Merman - when Lansbury took on GYPSy in 1973. Of course, Lansbury won us over. A new different interpretation of an iconic role. I hope she breaks through the barrier of peoples made up minds. So glad to see classic Broadway back on Broadway.

I saw the show for the first time in October 2022 and was blown away by Lea's performance. So much so, that I went back 7 more times to see her again. the last time was for the final performance on September 3, 2023. At that performance she took some songs up an octave or two and held some notes ridiculously long for a human being. Before the show started, an announcement was made "At this performance, The role of Fanny Brice will be played by..." pause and the audience gave a collective gasp. 'Lea Michele" and we went wild with relief. Thunderous applause as soon as she appears on stage and screaming after every song, deservedly so. She will be in concert at Carnegie Hall on October 30 and I was lucky enough to get a ticket.

I like bootlegs. Because, so i can see the shows, there will never been run in Germany. Funny Girl, for example. Or Shows, that are out of play. And it is the pure theater experience. No video or sound engineering. But i also like commercial proshots. And no one must be worry about that. I go also in the theatres, to watch this shows, if i can.

I have always been ambivalent toward bootleg videos of Broadway shows. I understand that it is unfair to the artists. However, this is the only way many of us will ever be able to see these shows. I wish there was a Netflix-type service for Broadway shows.

I hadn't seen Lea perform in quite a while, and like Marc, I was surprised at the acting. I agree with Marc on the "I beat my own drum" part, she's supposed to be mentally dragging herself up to defy the heartbreak, then it's at the last phrase that the facade should break. The audience energy comes through the screen. Barry Manilow spoke about how much Bette Miller needs an audience, that it completely changes how she performs, and her first album would have been a failure had they not rerecorded it with an audience in studio. Lea does better in the same way. This finale is difficult but despite a couple of wobbles in the early part the last part absolutely brings you to your feet. Triumph over adversity. You go girl.

I don't think she's necessarily pointing at the audience to remind them that it's a mirror. I think it's more of like when you stare at a mirror you are pointing at yourself. Like when someone wants to get something through their head that they needed to be reminded, whether that's a confidence boost, reality check, etc.

First, just want to say I'm a big fan of your channel after watching your Hamilton shows. 🙂 I was never a big Glee fan but started watching snippets of the show here via KZbin thanks to Naya Rivera and Amber Riley mainly. So I know Funny Girl mainly from Naya's scene-stealing pop version of Don't Rain on My Parade (RIP) from the show. Sorry to Barbara Streisand die-hard fans, I'm a ballet person not a broadway person, but I digress. So the heartbreak/optimism in this song reminds me of Naya ( as well as Cory) and so much potential cut short. I'm glad that Lea and Naya reconciled before Naya passed.

I agree when you said you doubted Lea's acting. Generally I felt like she was always aware of where the camera and where the audience was. She's one hell of a performer, performing for the camera and audience but that's different than acting and getting lost in the character. Lea in the past always seemed like she was trying to look pretty in every scene. In the opening of this number, I feel like she finally was able to lose her self in the character and not caring who's watching.

It's hard to compare any actor to the OG of any role in theatre. They are trail blazers and give everyone after a platform to push off of. It's hard not to compare, but you also gotta look at what the newer actors bring to the table. Taking on a role after Streisand takes balls, and that either counts for stupidity or guts. Which one it is is your opinion.

I’m 70 years old. For me, this production does not hold a candle to the original production which my late husband performed in. Nor did the 1968 production of FG I performed in at 15. I was only in the chorus of this college production of “Funny Girl” in Los Angeles but our Fanny was played by a brilliant actress/singer who’s name escapes me, but she was a polished pro who came into our production and really made it shine, but again, regarding FG on Broadway today? No. This production is just painful for me to watch! There is ONLY one Barbra Streisand!! Her voice & performance is seared into my mind & heart too deeply. However, Lea’s greatest contribution is admirably displaying to the younger set a “different type” of music & entertainment many young people today know little about, which in turn should inspire many to learn more about Broadway musicals and the great composers and artists who labor to create them! It’s a beautiful, inspiring, thrilling medium. If Lea succeeds in doing that, then this production will have served a magnificent purpose indeed.

Hi, Mark -- I caught Beanie's performance on Broadway and appreciate this comparison video. Just from the bootleg snippets I've seen so far, Beanie was much funnier than Ms. Michele who is a superior vocalist to Ms. Feldstein. So, both ladies' performances leave me unsatisfied. My major critique has to do with you presenting your analysis by placing yourself in full screen with your subject as an insert. I think you should reverse this -- and place yourself as the insert so we can get a better look at what you're critiquing. As is, Ms. Michele's performance occupies such a tiny portion of the screen, it's very hard for us to form our own opinion. I truly enjoy your work and appreciate the thought that goes into your segments.

I think that he underplays the importance of the audience's reaction. That is the beauty of live theater. Of course, when it is obvious that many members of this audience are there only for the star. It happens here, but it has always happens. We can see it work when the artist steps up to the challenge. It can flop when the draw is horrible. Oddly enough many of these draws are not as awful as one would have expected. One example was David Hasselholf in "Jekyll and Hyde." He gave a competent performance (which actually surprised me). Another was Susan Lucci, who was okay in "Annie Get Your Gun." But, they both got people into a theater for the first time.

They're both amazing. However Barbra Streisand, is Barbra Streisand. I've never understood why one performer would want to remake the work of a perfect performer that preceded them. I always thought, why not take a show, or song, that wasn't as good as it could have been, and remake that. Make that near miss amazing. When you redo perfection, you're always going to fall short of the original, no matter how good you are.

They cared more about putting someone with a big name on the marquee then they did about casting the person best for the role. There are so many talented people in the world who aren’t racist toxic people. Cast an unknown. Funny Girl was Barbra Streisand’s second Broadway role, and her first movie ever. It made her a star. Why couldn’t it do that for another unknown performer?

She can belt out a song. I don't think that she can caress the notes, her voice is one dimensional. I think Sutton Foster would have been a better choice. Granted she has the range but I don't like her voice.

Well, I don’t know her, and I have never seen Funny Girl as a play……but I adored the movie and I must say, she is no Barbra Striesand. I’m not familiar enough w/ Lea Michelle. I don’t even want to know who play Nick Arenstin (sp) because I loved Omar Sharif so much. But the years have rolled along and it’s probably time to see it in a new perspective. I’ll try not to criticize her.

@@Evey94Marti striesand and Lea Michelle, are not totally different. They are BOTH singers. That is where they are alike. Where they differ is in their styles. I need to get to know Lea Michelle better so I can appreciate her style more. I’m sure she is a lovely singer.

Ramin Karimloo plays Nicky - Phantom of the Opera, Jean ValJean Les Mis among others. He can actually sing! Good grief. Lea is brilliant, better that Barbra IMO and I'm a fan of Barbra's since she began.
