I worked in Brasil for 5 years and when we would go to the dry dock for inspection of the boat I would go out to the water front in the town of Niteroi across from Rio and me and a few of my crew would drink and jam on our guitars. Always had someone from the area ask if they could play one of our guitars. Well of course. That was the most fun I had while I was there.

The song is dedicated to former band member Syd Barrett, who left the band in 1968 due to unstable mental state caused by the use of psychedelics. It gave the title to the compilation album Shine On Pink Floyd and the compilation album Crazy Diamond by Syd Barrett. Shine On You Crazy Diamond is the longest song by Pink Floyd (26 minutes). And today it is Barrett's soul singing through the guitar.
