@Steelmonger888 I didn't say he did, when I said "he had success in alot of judo competitions", I meant local judo tournaments obviously - my point is MG having trained in Judo, he's somewhat familiar with the Newaza of Judo. There's a bunch of videos on youtube of him dominating legit judo blackbelts and judo olympic medalists (Jimmy Pedor being one of them) - if this video is not any indication of his familiarity of Judo Newaza, study his "Crucifix game" most of his set ups into weaving the foot/leg in to trap the arms of his opponent who turtles up is basically a staple in the Judo 'turn-overs into osaekomi' curriculum.

I don't think he bans them? I think every BJJ academy needs to get a reality check, break falls and throws are often shitty, grip fighting below standards and believing they are training a martial art by constantly rolling is a bad idea. It is good fun, great when not too removed from reality, but considering most famous BJJ black belts are also judo black belts, I think they were more than aware they shouldn't become too complacent with their all round game. A judo black belt came into a club I went to and fucked everyone up, so it just depends. Craig Fallon now would go into a lot of BJJ comps at black belt level and do quite well. Just because one thing is good doesn't mean other things aren't also good. If you rolled with Jimmy Pedro do you think you would school him? You saw one tap in four minutes, after he got put in a position he may not have experienced before, and nearly got out of. That shows a good problem solving mind. He also looked to do a bit better against Marcelo that Faria.

@@robinenman6812 Flavio Canto is a legend at newaza. As a Brazilian IFJ representative, he was not allowed to compete in any other sport, but old school BJJ black belts who trained with him back in the day said he was a legitimate threat with his submissions, even under sub grappling rules. Obviously the positional stuff (passing, sweeping, etc) was not his bread and butter, but the power and speed and accuracy of his submissions shocked a lot of professional BJJ black belts, many of whom had never seen submissions like his before. BJJ has evolved a lot since then and people are a lot savvier, but I wouldn't be surprised if he could still get some legit taps with his Canto choke. Also, there are a lot of Japanese newaza specialists, especially those who come from a Kosen Judo background. Komuro Koji is one of the most famous, as he has competed in IBJJF rules and tapped out black belts before. His famous "Komlock" submission (the armbar where you control the arm with your armpit) is devastatingly fast and strong, and he also has a great Ezekiel choke.

I have a quastion for BJJ and JUDO competitors (sorry for my english I'm polish). Is there really a big difference (despite from strategy/tactics) between Judo's ne-waza/ground work and BJJ? I mean, I have never seen any BJJ techniques which I haven't seen in Judo instructional movies made by for example Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki or Christian Peden. As far as I did my investigation it was like this: 1) ju-jitsu was invented/created in Old Japan for a battlefield. In all battles, there were many soldiers on both sides, so that art includet standing fight and only ending ground techniques (almost no position changing, transitions on the ground). 2) Jigoro Kano developed JUDO called also Kano's Ju-Jitsu, where he developed ground work called ne-waza and standing position fighting tachi-waza. This time new arrt included all spectrum of ground fighting, all transitions, avoiding logs, chokes and so on (what we now see in BJJ). 3) Many JUDOgas were competing different styles guys, so boxers, wrestlers ju-jitsu fighters to prove that Judo was superior. One of them was Maeda who was a teacher of JUDO to Carlson Gracie/Gracies. 4) And now the question arises: is that true that Gracies throw out most of standing techniques, saved ne-waza and called it Gracies Jiu-Jitsu (to defferentiate "their style" from Kano's Ju-Jitsu = JUDO) and sold it to the westeners as their invention? Old Judo (he's 55 years old) teacher I've talked to was angry when I asked him about BJJ, hes answer was like this: "Don't talk about BJJ in front of me, it's not Brazilian it's judo, they have changed techniques' names, belt colors and say it's brazilian". He is great technician, great in ground fighting (5th DAN). He also realies that unfortunatelly during JUDO competitions there is only very limited time for ground work and hopes that it will change because Japanes see that there is "new" martial art which is stealing their heritage. So please tell me is BJJ something new? Strategy and competition rules is not enough to call it different from JUDO's ground work. I know that many clubs organize no time limmits JUDO matches where ground work is included after throw. PS. To all people who are patient enough to read my note to the end - I'm not claiming that if You train BJJ You are worst. No! As we all know many BJJers won against JUDOgas, but if what I wrote above is true - BJJer=JUDO ground fighters winning against less experienced colegues. In JUDO club it usually takes much more time to become good on the ground. I'm going to place my question under few movies on YT. Thanks for all answers.

+Paweł Paweł There are huge differences, mostly because of the difference in rule sets. Some positions that are very important in sport BJJ like playing open guard against a standing opponent don't really occur in Judo due to the rules about restarts. In addition, BJJ has a much more diverse submission game from the top because you cannot finish by pin. In Judo there is no incentive to try and submit someone when you're in mount, you just hold the pin and win. And in general while many positions will occur in Judo and BJJ they are generally not practiced in Judo because they're not that important, so BJJ guys will be much better at them. In the same way, Judo guys will 99.99% of the time have much better standing grappling skills than BJJ competitors, because even though BJJ guys learn throws they usually don't practice them that often and aren't that good at them. Judo groundwork emphasizes pins and fast attacks, BJJ emphasizes positional dominance ending in submission from a superior position. They are very different in practice even if there is a lot of crossover in terms of techniques. I say that as a Judo black belt and BJJ brown belt who has competed a lot in both.
@anarchic_ramblings
@anarchic_ramblings 8 жыл бұрын
+Paweł Paweł BJJ is an offshoot of Kodokan judo. There are no _fundamental_ differences between what you learn at a BJJ club and the newaza you learn at a judo club, but there are stylistic differences, which I would describe as 'superficial'. As for the experience of training at a judo club vs. a BJJ club, one difference is that when you roll at your BJJ club you will always look for the submission, whereas when doing newaza randori at a judo club it's common to restart once one of you has pinned the other. Also, when doing newaza randori at a judo club it's common for one person to start in turtle position.

+Paweł Paweł - They are very similar as far as origin goes. But......Today's sport Judo will get you killed in a street fight where as today's BJJ, even sport BJJ, will give you a much better shot at survival. Most judo people that I know of treat it like karate and just want to have a colored belt on and look cool. The school I used to train judo at was terrible because no one wanted to train because practicing throws and learning how to take a fall hurts, and most new judo people are allowed to train a very soft version that serves no purpose on the street or in competition. Also, a lot of Sensei's in Judo, like the weird sorta attention from the students that see them as master of life rather than just a teacher of judo.
@trampley
@trampley 8 жыл бұрын
+Mr4433 that has not been my experience at all at any judo school I've trained at. Judo is usually treated as a sport and as such judoka train very hard and become highly proficient in their core game. I've found the kind of LARPong you're describing to be common at TKD and kung fu schools but I've never seen it in Judo. It's a great art for self defense.

trampley I agree, The school that was close to me that I tried out was terrible. I love Judo when trained with people that also love Judo for what it is. There is nothing worse than someone in uniform that doesn't know shit about technique but then tells people they do Judo. Fortunately, I train BJJ now with some very high level wrestlers that love take-downs and I love doing my go to Judo techniques, mostly drop seoi-nage and ko uchi gari, and osoto gari. Cant go wrong with those 3 in combination plus wrestling.

interpreter911 "Another level" You got to be kidding me. I also have a black belt in bjj and know how hard the sport is but to compare that to a double Olympic medalist not to mention world champion you really need to wake up. Millions of people practice Judo and 202 countries participate in the Olympics you can't compare how hard it is to medal in the Olympics. Yep I will agree Marcelo could be the best submission grappler but to say he's on another level is silly.
