my husband and i went scuba diving for the first time today in the Philippines, he is complaining that his ears still feel like they have water in them from equalizing i think. the experienced diver we went with said to turn your head and rub behind your ears and i think water went deep in his ears and he cant get it out. is this common? he also spit blood when he reached the service. the experienced diver said thats common? any thoughts or suggestions?
@MarcelVanDenBerg15 жыл бұрын
Hi, sorry for my late reply There can be different reasons for the feeling of having water in the ear, but what I found out was most common was that he probably has wax in the ear and needs to flush it. A bit of blood coming out can mean something harmless like a ruptured vain because of a reverse block. But I am no doctor and to be sure and safe I recommend you to ask a Doctor these questions. Best of success and enjoy diving in the future! :)

When I had the first pool session, I couldn't descend as my left ear won't equalize! I tried to swallow, chew, wiggle my jaw but nothing worked for 5 mins therefore, I had to give up and come out from the pool. I was worried about the next session, asked experienced diver friends but they couldn't solve the mystery as they never had the same problem. People said if you tilt your neck backwards, Eustachian tubes will be more opened but it didn't work for me. So I combined several ways I found online, that worked! -> Tilt your neck to the back and right side (the opposite side of your problematic ear) and then do Valsalva manoeuvre! That worked! And I found your video is very helpful too. I think this is one of the best equalizing tip videos. Thank you for your video. Thumbs up! 👍

@9:56 This is the best advice I've ever heard, I've seen a lot of instructors teach new divers different techniques, but none of them mention "do it longer and let the pressure build up". I'm always having some trouble equalizing my ear, I've tried all different techniques and the only one that MIGHT work on me was taking a big breath, pinching my nose, and blowing hard and short. On my 40ish dive I decided to blow long and gently, which was a magic discovery. I have never had any equalizing issues since, I wish I could find this video earlier.

This was really helpful. I just did my first dive the other day and I eventually had to come back up because I just could not get the pain to go away. I’m still trying to get the bubble feeling out of my ears today! I had no idea if I had equalized the entire way down it would’ve been better and furthermore, I had NO idea that equalizing was that critical to the point experienced divers cancel their dives if they’re having issues. I feel a lot better about my failed mission lol

Good to hear Leanna! Trust me we all have these issues sometimes especially as beginner divers. It is a feeling when to equalize and like learning to ride a bicycle you will get it at one point. Whatever happens if it doesn’t work or feel bad just cancel the dive and try another :)

I was having difficulty equalizing my ears because my left ear wouldn't equalise, that's why it took me time to descend. I wish I had seen your video before I dove. I can pop my ears just by flexing the muscles in my ear/jaw. It's similar to a yawn or a swallow without having to do either. I learned this by doing a lot of driving through the Rockies. Works great on flights. It also never fails, and can do it on command. Want to take up Scuba diving within the next year. Is this sufficient, or do I need to learn the other techniques (Valsalva makes me nervous)?

When you equalize you only pause you breath for a second and you are exhaling and you are not supposed to move up when you equalize, this way it is no problem :)

@MarcelVanDenBerg12 жыл бұрын
Hi Rox, when you equalise you only briefly blow, this is not holding your breath. Also holding your breath can only cause problems when you ascent and we equalise stationary or while descending. That is why is is no problem :) I hope it helps

I’m just starting my diving certification training… doing the online part now! I’m excited but very nervous about my ears. I even have to take sinus meds before flying to equalize my ears and yawning is what works for me. I always get scared trying to equalize even on land because I feel my ears will burst if I hold my nose….every time I swallow normally my ears crackle… I wonder if that is equalizing but I’m thinking too much about it or trying too hard… ??🤷🏻♀️😭
@MarcelVanDenBerg12 жыл бұрын
Hi Alyssa, that is perfectly normal as we are not supposed to equalise our ears on land. So hearing is crack when you swallow or wiggle your jaw on land is perfectly normal and a good sign, knowing that you can probably easily equalize underwater. Trying to pinch the nose and equalize on land cause extra pressure from the inside as your ears are already normal. Doing it slowly is ok to see if you can equalize, but you should never equalise on land to land or long. Even underwater we do it slowly, but especially on land it can cause problems when you do it too hard. In other words get the proper dive lessons and they will teach you how to equalize gently underwater and you will be fine 😌 Have fun scuba diving!

Hi, it might just be a one time event. See a physician and ask for advice.It also helps to learn how to equalise with a diving instructor and always wash the inside of your ears with clean water after going into the pool, sea or lake. Have a great day! :)
@latnc2 жыл бұрын
I just have a lot of trouble equalising since my very first dive. Every time I did the nose pinching methods, my ears feel as if they were about to burst and they ended up more stuffed than before (I tried describing as best as I could). After a few more tries, I just couldn't feel a 'pop' in my ears but they were no longer as stuffed as before and not painful so I continued the dive. Always ended with clogged ears or ear (not painful at all, just uncomfortable) after every dive which lasted till the next day when I wake up. I also couldn't equalise on land, maybe I did it correctly but I just can't judge when I am on land because there is no pressure difference. I'll be doing my open water trip exam soon and I am really nervous about all these. Tips, anyone?
@MarcelVanDenBerg12 жыл бұрын
Hi Feah, This can be or because you equalise too hard or not often enough, this will cause swelling and inflammation inside giving the feeling of a clogged ear. It can also be having too much ear wax or a combination of both. I recommend that you have yourself checked up first with a licensed Physician before your next dive and if he/she clears you for diving then try to do it more often and not to hard and try to decent slowly. I hope this helps and best success on your Open Water Exam :)
@latnc2 жыл бұрын
@@MarcelVanDenBerg1 Hey Marcel, I really appreciate your reply. I did the Open Water Exam already and it was a. massive success. I told my instructor that I had difficulty in equalising and he was willing to patiently wait for me until I managed to equalise. I went down to 18 meters easily on my fourth dive :) I think the main issue back then was rushing myself. I had a different instructor back then and a few other students who equalised way faster than I did, so I tried catching up with them. I already went to an ENT specialist and he cleared me for scuba diving. He also prescribed me some nasal sprays which helped a lot.

I did my first try dive a few weeks ago and even though I thought I equalised my ears, I ended up getting a mild form of ear barotrauma in my right ear (I only went 3 metres down). I realised afterwards, that my right ear is narrower than the other and won’t equalise just from pinching my nose. I was pretty worried I’d be unable to dive due to this but soon found that if I tilt my head so that my right ear is facing up towards the surface and then pinch my nose, it does equalise properly.

I always did Valsalv manoeuvre during the pool training but when we were diving in lake I had soft rhinitis so it was harder to equalise. And what you said 10:26 ♡ I was so stressed about what is going to happen if I couldn't equalise during that dive but the same experienced diver also told me that he has also days when he simply cannot equalise and it's ok and it encouraged me very much. do you still breath in when doing this? the reason i ask is that i heard people dont suppose to hold their breath?
@MarcelVanDenBerg13 жыл бұрын
Hi Daisy, Holding your breath underwater can be dangerous when you ascent because your air in your lungs will expand and if you hold your breath it cannot escape which can damage your lungs. When you are equalizing your ears you are descending of staying still, so in this case, holding your breath will have no effect. However, because holding your breath can cause severe injury on the ascent we always say and teach to just never hold your breath underwater. When you are staying still of descending and you are trying to equalize your ears, you are closing your mouth and nose only for a split second, which also does damage your lungs. However, never equalize too hard as that can hurt your round window in your ear. Just go down slowly, gently pinch your nose once and awhile, and gently equalize your ears. A bit longer can really help, but never too hard. When we ascent (go up), we don't have to equalize our ears, so you will also not close your nose or mouth, On the ascent, you will just breathe normally through your mouth in and out, which will equalize your lungs to not damage them. I hope this explanation helps to answer your question? If not then please let me know and I can help you further :) Have a great day Daisy! Marcel

I'll explain my case to you in case it helps someone else. I can make up for the difficulties we can all have out of the water. But once in the water he made up for it with great difficulty and he needed to do it again right away. I have discovered that my ear canal is narrow and that when I enter the water a little air bubble remains in each ear. when it compensated, that air is compressed but immediately had a need to compensate again. Now I know that as I enter the water I must turn my head so that the ear is pointing upwards and compensate, I notice how the bubble comes out, I change my ear pointing upwards and I compensate again. I no longer have a problem keeping my eardrum relaxed throughout the dive. Good blue

The intranasal space communicates with a series of neighbouring air-filled cavities within the skull (the paranasal sinuses) and also, via the nasolacrimal duct, with the lacrimal apparatus (tearducts) in the corner of the eye. However, everyone's case is different and I am NOT a doctor. So it is important that you just check with a doctor if you are ok to dive. Then you know for sure :) I hope this helps :)

Excellent training. Wish I had viewed it one month ago. I just returned (12/30/18) from dive trip to Fiji. First dive OK. Second dive after 90 min surf interval not OK. Could not equalize pressure in right ear. Tried ascending to depth where discomfort gone, but no luck equalizing. Aborted dive. Able to equalize right ear after 5 mins in boat. Same experience next day. First dive OK. Second dive aborted. Skipped diving on day 3. On day four, had to abort first dive. Did not attempt second dive. Day 5 (final day), first dive OK. Aborted second dive. No signs of congestion, but never occurred to me to blow my nose. Plus, I worried that I was a drag on the group, so I hurried through attempts to equalize. Lessons learned: 1.) Don't rush the descent, 2.) Blow my nose, Again, excellent video.
@MarcelVanDenBerg15 жыл бұрын
Hi David, Thank you for you comment and your case is something I have seen a lot with divers, and to be honest I also had similar experiences like that. All good on the first dive and then problems equalizing my ears on on the second dive. To be honest on the day's that I felt super fit with no congestion, I had equalizing issues. But the reason that I could not equalize my ears on those day's was because I tried to go down to quick and congestion was more hidden away in my sinuses. By just taking it more easy and blowing my nose (gently, but long) before and during ascent cleared all the congestion in my sinuses and made it much more easier to equalize my ears. Please share this video on your social media and don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to our channel! :) Happy Diving! Marcel van den Berg

Hoi Marcel, Informatieve video!
@MarcelVanDenBerg13 жыл бұрын

equalization all the time via Valsalva is not needed for the vast majority of people, just ensure to equalize every few feet. Having that spare hand is more important for things that come up like dry suit inflation etc. If you are able to equalize via frenzel method you will be a better Diver.

Yes, I used to have trouble clearing my ears, until a very experienced drive buddy suggested I "practice" equalizing in my car, while driving to the dive site. That ends up pushing the eardrum outwards a tiny bit, and obviously it springs right back. However, it seems to progressively clear any congestion, and might actually expand the eustachian tubes a tiny bit. I have adopted that technique and no more problems. As you say: equalize gently, and often, and BEFORE you have significant pressure on the eardrums. Thx for the video.

he mentions equalizing pretty much constantly which is correct but advanced divers go one better. You can hold your nose and pop your ears like everyone does. The method is to pop your ears bulging them out a bit as you down keep the eardrums under a bit of positive pressure. do not use the method ear drums are bulged inward a bit then equalize that is an incorrect path to take that you will drift away from. I was dry suit diver whith dry hood so as I dropped down midwater I had to do my ears plus equalize the hood plus equalize the mask plus equalize the drysuit itself. If you dont equalize the mask it will suck your eyes out bursting blood vessels. If you dont equalize the hood it will suck your ear drums out even though you are equalizing. (I know that sounds backwards but when you analyze it its not). that is why NEVER let a shop talk you into drysuit and dry hood from the start.
@jaysilverheals44453 жыл бұрын
also dont do that shift the jaw or other garbage. that only works if your eardrums are negative pressure--a terrible idea

@MarcelVanDenBerg14 жыл бұрын
Hi Slm, it is important to do it gently, especially on land. It can be closed now because you might have some fluid or congestion inside your Middle Ear and that is now pushed against your ear drum. This indicates that you might have congestion or too much ear wax could be another reason. You should not dive until you feel better and I recommend you to see a physician to have a look at your ears and give you the best advice how to cure you.

The intranasal space communicates with a series of neighbouring air-filled cavities within the skull (the paranasal sinuses) and also, via the nasolacrimal duct, with the lacrimal apparatus (tearducts) in the corner of the eye. I know, i know really stupid, I will never do it again. But at some point while going down pretty close to the bottom (12 meters) the pain in my ears went away. I dont remember a click in my ears and to this day im confused if i managed to equalize or if my ears went numb beacuse of the pain. I had no pain or damages after the dive just sore ears. Is it possible for the pain to go away without equalizing? I want to take my diving certificate but still can't equalize my right ear. With the tips in your video i was able to equalize my left but nothings happening in the right. It feels like its blocked or something. Its really bothering me as i really want to go diving again but don't know what to do
@MarcelVanDenBerg15 жыл бұрын
Hi Hugo, It much of equalised at one point, you don't always feel or hear it. Maybe just try again and then go super, super slow, make sure you have no congestion, sleep well and no alcohol for 2 weeks before the dive. Then blow your nose a lot, and gently but long try to do the pinched nose technique... If that still not work then I recommend to see a Nose and ear specialist Doctor. He can look inside your sinuses and see where the problem might be.

Hey thanks a lot, I actually went on a trial/test dive a couple of days ago and I was able to equalize by doing it for a longer period of time like you guys showed. My ears apparently don't "pop" normally, its more like a long silent pop if you get me haha. So i'm starting my open water course next month. Thanks again!

This video helped me a lot! I have a dive tomorrow and the last time I did a dive was in 2017, but I did a pool refresher course in 2020 right before quarantine. During the refresher, I had a lot of pain in my ears and could not equalize, I wish I knew how to blow my nose underwater then!! Thank you

Thank you for this video! I do several dive trips per year but I always have trouble equalizing. I rewatch your video each time, and then remember to blow not hard, but for longer. That usually does the trick for me.

2:00 I’m sure there’s a joke in there somewhere.... Q: Why do SCUBA divers hold their noses when they are going down? A: Because they don’t want to have to smell the fish!

Kenny Ng Hi, yes you should definitely see a doctor for this. If the doctor can fix it, then you will feel such a relieve to be able to hear perfect again! Please let me know the result, when you come back from the doc

Me too, I'm half-deaf for 4 days now. I went scuba diving for my 1st time last weekend and had real problems with equalizing my ears when I got 10-15m deep. I ignored pain untill I was at bottom of lake (17m) then it was too much and I had to scream it out into water through rebreather, I quickly got to surface, then I rejoined my tutor and few minutes later I had same problem, resurfaced quickly again. I finished my diving lesson but when I got out of water my nose started bleeding due to me trying to equalize pressure in my ears too hard even when I did not manage to get it working. I had also very intense pain in ears 1-2 days after the diving. Now it is 4th day and my hearing feels like I wear headphones all the time. Gotta to see a doctor since its not getting better
@MarcelVanDenBerg14 жыл бұрын
@@dominikdolezal5066 Hi Dominik, I am sorry to hear that you went through this experience. But ignoring any pain underwater is bad. In this case you should have stopped when you felt discomfort in your ears. If you feel pain then you have waited too long or/and went too deep. Also it is be dangerous to surface quickly for decompression sickness and/or a reverse block. Please go to a doctor now first to check up if you can scuba dive. Get the right documentation from the doctor, but even if a doctor clears you for diving you should never dive if you are in pain. I hope it will all woks out for you :)

Last time when i used "pinch the nose" technique i vas feeling very dizzy....for a moment i was scared ....luckily feeling of dizziness went away in 10 seconds...this was all in shallow pool water of about 1.5-2 m....i am afraid if i go at 20 meters that the same might happen...any suggestions why this happened and how to avoid it???
@MarcelVanDenBerg1 Жыл бұрын
Hi Nikola, Maybe you had some congestion or did it too hard. You can check with a dive doctor and then try it again.

I did my first dive today it’s felt like I’ve had water in my ear for 8 hours now since I dived is that normal? Will this feeling subside?
@MarcelVanDenBerg13 жыл бұрын
Hi Jarrett, this sometimes happens because you or have some wax in your ear or in more common cases you have inflation in your ear which can trap some fluids. This can happen because of congestion or equalizing to hard. Most of the time this will go away with some rest, but it is better to check it with a physician first. They can have a look and give you the best advice and even medicine if needed. Please don't go diving again until you first checked with the Physician. I hope you feel better soon :)

Hello Marcel I hope you have a great day. My question is that my right ear wasn't equalize during dive what should I do? I also have close right ear after the dive now it's approx 30hr but still close tell me what should I do to reopen and how to relive my congestion ? Thanks in advance.
@MarcelVanDenBerg13 жыл бұрын
Hi Bilal, My day is great thank you :) It could be multiple reasons: 1. Outside: You have too much wax in your ears and the water is blocked, you can flush it at the doctor. 2. Inside: Maybe you equalized too hard. 3. Most likely you have congestion and inflammation inside. 4. Another reason reason unknown etc. In all cases I recommend to see a physician. They can do a medical check and can give you the best advice how to solve it.

This video was top notch. You just took away all my fears regarding equalising (had some trouble in the pool today, but thanks to you i now know my technique was all wrong, also blowing my nose helped a ton right in this moment). If tommorow the longer and gentle approach works, imma be happy. And if not? Im gonna cancel the dive and be happy too! Maybe do a bit of drone flying. Cheers mate!
