Butterflies & Birds in the Backyard

Күн бұрын

What gardener doesn't love springtime when the perennials come back to life! March is such a beautiful month in the Houston area. I wish I could bottle up this weather for later in the season, lol! The hummingbirds are migrating and I have seen the male ruby throats for a couple of weeks now. Birds are migrating north and the native bees have emerged. Come and join me as I go through our backyard pollinator garden.

@@marleneegan-hm7lr Hello neighbor. Good to connect with a fellow garden enthusiast. Yes these videos are so much fun and informative. Now that spring is here I am busy planting as many plants as I can before it gets too hot and we get water rationing. LOL. I am going with Texas natives and drought tolerant plants. Have fun gardening. 🌹

So beautiful! I am learning so much from your videos! I'm planting a coral honeysuckle today. My cardinal climbers are reaching for the netting! I hope my Gregg's mist grows like yours. I haven't seen many butterflies yet either. It seems like I would have seen more by now.

That is exciting you are planting a coral honeysuckle today! And the cardinal climbers should grow nicely - remember they do like their water. Mine usually don't flower until late summer - sometime in late August when they flower prolifically ... just in time for the hummer migration. I have seen butterflies, but not in the numbers I have seen in years past at this time. Hopefully they are just late starters this year. 😊

@@ButterfliesNBirds You are welcome! I had received the porterweed in mid February and put it in a larger pot. Had to bring it inside a couple times as the temps dipped. But it has put on some good growth and is doing quite well here in zone 8b 🪴 Have you had a lot of Hummingbird activity during spring migration?

We have had steady hummingbird activity during this spring migration. It is nothing like the fall migration though when we have lots and lots of hummers. They also don't stay very long in the spring. It will be interesting to see if my female stays again this summer.

You definitely needed 2 parts for the May your. I enjoy you taking the time to talk through what you are growing. Would you consider doing a video talking about your routine to fertilize your plants and what you use and frequency. Thanks
@ButterfliesNBirds
@ButterfliesNBirds Ай бұрын
Hi! Sure, I can do that. But I have to admit, I don't do much fertilizing because most of my plants are perennials. I used a product for the first time this spring called Happy Frog Soil Conditioner for all my containers and garden beds. I loved it when I was putting it on in the spring time. I really think it has made a difference this year in the blooms. It was my compost application, and I believe I will be using it each spring now. The only downside is it was kind of expensive.

@@ButterfliesNBirds yes that stuff is pricy! Except for pots I’m not convinced fertilizer during growing season is vital. But pots are diffetent
@ButterfliesNBirds
@ButterfliesNBirds Ай бұрын
I agree with you. I know I need to fertilize containers, but I am not the best at it. I also only put down a good layer of compost in the garden beds in the spring and then that is it.

Very nice tour things are really coming to life in your garden. I was able to find more cape honeysuckle at Walmart in 3 gal bought 2 more to go with 3 I bought last spring that are now 5-6’ tall I need to trim back I potted them up last fall and brought them in a couple times when we got same cold snaps you got in January here in panhandle of Florida. You have such a nice variety of salvia. I finally had a small pot of a purple salvia come back this year so I was pleased. I almost ordered some coleus from same place you did in earlier video but Friday found some really nice ones at a local nursery. Lowes & HD this year don’t have any that look interesting maybe they will get more variety later. Finally seeing you had planted cardinals climbers made me want to do it again. Despite the late blooming it is still a nice vine plant. I also potted up a bunch of caladium bulbs today. Hate the wait to see them come up and look so amazing. Thanks for sharing all the treasures in your yard. Means more knowing we are in same growing zone and experience same weather challenges

Thank you! That is wonderful that you found more cape honeysuckle in such large pots! They are so nice to have in the fall and winter when not a lot is actively blooming. I can see why you picked up more. I prefer to get all my plants locally if I can and I only order something if I cannot find it locally. I agree with you on the caladium bulbs - I want them to come up much sooner than they do - lol! This is the first year I have planted bulbs and I'm not a fan of just seeing dirt right now. Ha ha! I appreciate all the comments as it if fun to connect with other gardeners!

That is a good idea for a video. Currently I have been getting potting mix at Costco (which is Miracle Grow with compost - and it is cheaper). I also save my potting soil to reuse it. (You need to rejuvenate it first before you reuse it).

Like your videos, cause I can compare how your plants are doing compared to mine, and how they do with pollinators. Pearland here. I was wondering if you have tried the Candy Corn vine (Manettia) a shade lover, almost a houseplant. I got it at Buchanans two years ago and it died back to the base in a large pot with that year’s hard freeze, but came back over that year slowly. This year I saved it in the garage during this last freeze and put it back out afterwards and it is now going bonkers with blooms since I put it out. It looks awesome on the obelisk and I will let you know how they do with the hummers. BTW, the hummers liked your porter weed suggestion, but it did not like the freeze. I have to take cuttings of it this year to overwinter it.

Hello fellow Pearlander! 😊 No, I haven't tried the Candy Corn plant - it sounds very interesting. Yes, please let me know what the hummers and pollinators think. I am always looking for plants that attract pollinators. Does yours flower abundantly? And does it flower all throughout our summer? You make an excellent point concerning the porterweed plant (thanks for letting me know the hummers were attracted to yours) - I need to put mine in the ground and then take cuttings of them before winter. I have mine in pots, but I would prefer to have them in the ground. They are definitely not cold hardy which is a pain. But, they are so much of a pollinator attractor that I want to have them in the garden.

I have had Turks cap in the ground for years, it is deeply imbedded in clay and never misses a beat! I tried digging one up once and it was very happy in its home and wouldn’t budge so I left it. Also what did you you to tie your Mexican flame vine trellis to the posts? Can you do a quick video on how you did it or just show what the set up looks like please? Only thing I don’t like about vines is setting up support, I don’t like spending money on it or taking the time 🤷🏻‍♀️
@ButterfliesNBirds
@ButterfliesNBirds 3 ай бұрын
That is great to hear concerning the Turk's cap. I planted one in the ground that I started from seed (from my potted Turk's cap). It has only been a year, but I think I have it in a poor location as it is not loving its life. I would like to plant a couple more in the ground. How much sun does your get? I purchased the Mexican Flame vine and it was in its nursery pot supported by bamboo. After I planted it I tied the supporting vines to the trellis with garden stretch tie tape. It doesn't take long for the vines to grow and wrap around the trellis which further supports it. Sure, I can do a video on this. I have been lucky because my husband originally put up my trellises and now it is simple using them each year by training the vines on them.

@@ButterfliesNBirds ahhh your husband did it. Yeah you won’t find mine doing thay for me😂, he is not interested in the garden at all! Actually we went to Home Depot and I got a tall metal trellis. About the Turks cap, strangely enough it gets mostly shade or Doppler most of the day and gets that last blast of blazing hot afternoon sun. It used to wilt a bit but o think now that it’s deeply rooted it doesn’t seem to wilt anymore. But my pink one does wilt and the sun it gets isn’t super late. Oh another fact about my Turks cap, it survived being under 5 ft of water during Harvey for 11 days!
@ButterfliesNBirds
@ButterfliesNBirds 3 ай бұрын
Good luck with your new trellis! Since Turk's Cap is a native, I think once it is established it can go through quite a lot ... evidenced by being underwater from Harvey for that many days! Wow! My Turk's Cap in the two pots gets really nice morning sun. The one that isn't doing so well is in heavy shade.

@ButterfliesNBirds
@ButterfliesNBirds 3 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! 🥰 I heavily rely on compost each spring to do the most for fertilizing the garden beds. I don't fertilize much after that. With the pots that is a little different as they lose nutrients pretty fast. I have been using Espoma's liquid "Bloom! Super Blossom Booster" which is an organic. I like to use organics because of all the pollinators that are on the flowers. I will also use Espoma's Plant Tone (slow release) in the spring for the larger containers/pots. And then for the hibiscus containers I fertilize once a month with Nelson Plant Food NutriStar Hibiscus fertilizer. When I plant I try to remember to use Osmocote Plus in the planting hole which is a slow release fertilizer ... but I remember to do this only about 50% of the time! lol.

@@ButterfliesNBirds Thank you Rachel for getting back to me. Will definitely try those out . I also put Osmocote plus when planting and believe in organic as to not harm the pollinators. I have been using Alaska fish emulsion but it seems to drive our two dogs crazy🤣😂

@@ButterfliesNBirds I do like it. Every thing seems to be thriving since I started using it . Some people can’t stand the smell but it just smells like the beach to me. Guess growing up on the coast makes one not notice as much as those that are not . I did a great bit of research as I really want natural/ organic so not to hurt any of the pollinators and yet get the growth and blooms .
