Hello and welcome to Next Stop News, a Branch of the Smartquest devoted to informing my fan base and the transit community of events which occur throughout the month(s) which they cover.
This is March 2024's Joint Update, a continuation from where I left off in December 2023. This video addresses Boeing Developments, Subway News, and changes within the fleet utilized at depots at NYCT Bus and MTA Bus, such as retirements, transfers, loans, and new deliveries. Thanks to the sheer volume of content, I found it necessary to separate Other Systems from the rest of the Update. In this video, you will hear about the Boeing 737 Max 9s, R211s, other New Tech Trains (NTTs), CBTC, Second Avenue Subway, derailments, loans at various depots, XE40s, new Conehead (135 + 173) and XD40 (116) deliveries for MTA Bus Depots, Old Gen/Next Gen retirements, and much more! There will also be featured photos at the end of the video.

@@dodge1515 If they mess around and send all of them to scrap, it'll truly be a travesty. If they can preserve 3000, they can do the same with one of the OGs

It will not be the same when the old gen hybrids retire. I have a lot of memories riding and growing up with them. Bus #3698 would be my last sight and sound of an old gen on Saturday 3/16/2024 while on Q41. It spend on right pass me while walking near the Jamaica Center station (E), (J), (Z) without even trying to catch it. Fun fact, I remember #3698 crash into a house while doing the Q113 back around October 2015 and it was on the news and they soon repair that bus within a couple of months. My last ride on an old gen was Bus #3704 on the Q6 back on 5/15/2023. RIP Orion VII Hybrids and long live in our memories.

Speaking of bus preservations. I was checking on CPTDB that 6328, one of the 1999 Orion 5’s is expected to be preserved for the “Museum Fleet”. 6000 was supposed to be preserved for the “Museum Fleet” but was scrapped between 2018-2019 due to “Frame Rot.” So instead of seeing 6000 in a future Bus Festival, we will be seeing 6328 instead. And I was also checking that bus 117, the only 2002 New Flyer D60HF (ex-5534) is still pending preservation while at Eastchester Scrap. I would really like to see that 1999 Orion V preserved and despite their poor build quality, I hope it can resist.

Goodmoring sir . And Thank-you for keeping us updated todate with the MTA Fleet Buses and Subway Fleet. You always find a way to give us awesome video sir. I can remember back in the days in 2006-2007 when MTA Bus was still kinda of new at And the Orion VII O.G Hybrids where the new kids on the block when it come down to the Buses Equipment. They had replaced some of the original Private Bus Operators Greenline Jamaica TriBoro Coach GMC RTS and some of there MCI Classic that where use as Local Buses. Except for Spring Creek Depot. At the Spring Creek was starting to there fleet of Orion VII O.G Hybrids. They were good Buses and fast Buses . They had lasted untill the New Flyer C-40 Next-Gens sent them to other MTA Bus Depots. Wow 2006-2007 came and went very quickly 😮. As now now the MTA only has 7 Orion VII O.G Hybrids left. And the Orion VII Next-Gens are still holding it down for MTA. MTA Bus and MTA NYCTA. I have a Question for you do you think that College Point Depot will get more Orion VII Next-Gens .sir I didn't know that you review on Airplanes also

Just as a mini update: -Congestion pricing has been canceled (for now). -Some 2024 New Flyer XE40 Electrics have been delivered in the #5000 series. - Due to the congestion plan falling through, several MTA capital projects have been delayed including the Inter-borough. - Some Electric bus orders MIGHT be delayed or canceled as a result as well. - Since last update, around 100 more NG Hybrids have been retired, among them #3807 (last 2008 unit), #3982, #4034-36, #4256, and #4651. - 2017 New Flyer XD60 #6033 is likely off the roster due to an engine fire. - Around 30-40 new R-211s have been delivered.

7414 from Stengel (an Ida damaged Bus, you forgot) is at Zerega (on 1/31/24) with a Zerega sticker likely for maintenance.

As of now, only #3751 is left in service, working the Q37 for what could very well be the last day for them in service. 8:23pm eastern time.

The 5 LFSes are being built right now and that is cool to see and these will be assigned to Kingsbridge Depot and hopefully they order more LFSes in the near future and I assume they want to make Jamaica Depot a fully Novabus LFS

If I may add info for your next update, R46 5894-5897 and 6186-6189 are now transferred to Coney Island Yard now that the A/C have over 10 trains of R211 class. Meanwhile, 2768-2775 are back home at Concourse Yard . Also, good update at LGA. Although, 4011 and 4074 are active at LGA. Only flaw is that the GPS is disabled so, it runs invisible. 4531 is still in-service but retired is 4532. LGA also sent 4398 and 4514 to JFK. Right now, 4266 and 4422 are at JFK. Side note: 4037 and 4081 at JFK didn't make it service long enough.

About the 96 St Derailment, you made a few errors. The consists were 2176-2180+2206-2210 (the train with activated brakes) and 2411-2415+2275-2271 (the in-service train that was directed on to the express track to bypass the train with its brakes pulled. At 96 Street, the in-service train was halfway through the switch to the local track when 2176 crashed into 2415 because of a radio malfunction, which made the operator at the middle of the train (2206) not able to know there was a train crossing in front of them. As a result, 2176 was retired and replaced with R62A 1934 from Westchester Yard, 2271-2275 and 2206-2210 are back in service, and 2411-2415 is pending.

The 5 LFSe+ will be assigned to Kingsbridge Depot for sure and additional 380 LFSe+ in the upcoming years. They want to make Jamaica a fully LFS buses and they will push the remaining XD40s to either Brooklyn, Bronx, or Manhattan.

I think at this point that the only Orion 7s that are somewhat safe for now will be the 2011-2012 Clean Diesel EPA10 3Gs #7000-7089 as these are the only ones that do not have a fully confirmed set of replacements inbound (we just assume they will be retired around 2025-2026). Even their CNG counterparts #1840-1884 have replacements due near the end of the year into next.

There are some XE40s confirmed to arrive in the future, but their assignments still remain to be seen. However, people have been speculating on how many buses will be assigned to each depot based on Electric Stages of Conversion

@@Techno-ov5ss Yes, something like 187 new XE40s are due beyond this inital 60 units. There is of course, the hundreds of new XD60s coming soon too. What I am waiting to hear about though is: -The Electric Van Hool order (5 units) - The New Flyer XHE40 order (2 units) - The long awaited final CNG order (110? units) - The last Hybrid Electric order (210 units) - Final 350 or so NYCTA 40 ft Clean Diesel order (somewhere between contracts).

At this point, everyone should fan those EPA’s fast as they are a relic of what was once tbe greatest bus fleet to be in Queens and Ulmer Park.

What's even worse is that within the last 2 months we've seen a number of incidents on Boeing jets, the wheels falling off in San Fran, plane skidding off the runway and multiple other incidents 😭

The 737 is an outdated model. It was first made decades ago to be low to the ground on purpose. But this isn't really needed at modern airports anymore, preventing Boeing from adding larger engines. (This is one case where bigger *is* better; larger engines increase the bypass ratio, making engines more powerful *without* needing more fuel.)

797 is still years away, but supposdely is slated to be the replacement for the 737 (as in a narrowbody verison of the 787).

@@dodge1515 Last I heard about that, their newest planned jet was supposed to be a replacement for the 757, which is a larger narrowbody than the 737.

There’s now 4 at JFK/Far Rockaway, sets being #3708, #3751 (the set on my pfp), #3756, and #3762. man, they really want these poor things to just go like if it’s nothing. They retired 3 sets yesterday, #3698, #3700, and #3748 retired yesterday. Td when i checked the JFK/Far Rockaway poster, I saw there was 4 left. I was like WTF, they’re retiring so fast! 😳 at least i caught an OG and took a vid On the Q11 on Sunday cuz not only will that be my LAST TIME Seeing an OG Hybrid in the entire MTA, but they’ll probably be retired in less then a week.

4408 was forced to retire due to a crash. Bus was scrapped at LaGuardia before being sent to Eastchester.

I have a question to ask you if you don’t mind. How can the MTA continue to comply with the “Buy America Act” if they are looking into buying “Zero-Emission Buses” from a European Manufacturer? I was checking on CPTDB not too long ago that the MTA is planning on purchasing 5 Electric Buses from a Polish Bus Manufacturer called Solaris. The plan is for a total of 5 Solaris Urbino NAE40 buses and those buses are expected to be for NYCT. I personally find this very weird and I wasn’t even imagining that the MTA would consider buying “Zero-Emissions Buses” from bus manufacturers outside of the United States. I am wondering how would European built buses look like in the I ❤ NY Livery if they were to be an option for the Zero Emissions Fleet for the foreseeable future? It will be great if the MTA can have the opportunity to analyze other bus manufacturers within the United States as Novabus won’t be considered an option anymore once the US Plant closes in 2025. I feel that Gillig can be an option as it is a bus manufacturer in California and this can be an example for the MTA to continue complying with the “Buy America Act” when ordering new buses within the United States. I personally feel that options have been very difficult ever since Orion went out of business more than a decade ago.

I don’t believe we’ll be seeing them there in the near future, as the ones we have are in 5-car configuration. An Option II R211 however… maybe

I’m gonna miss the Old Gens 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢i rode 3698 last month on the Q6 and 3708 today on Q41. 3698 and 3700 officially retired today, 3500 went to scrap . IT’S NOT FAIR! I want them to stay here longer😢😢😢😢😢😭😭😞 All the 3600’s are gone as of today

@@Techno-ov5ss very true . The Laguardia OG’s outlasted others which was surprising. I’ve only ever seen 3594 once but i rode 3736 many times on the Q33 and 3601 and others. Glad i took time out of my day to do so and get my photos and videos. I’m just really upset and heartbroken over the JFK ones being killed off one by one especially my favorite unit 3700, which i last saw on the Q22 driven by a friendly Operator. Had i not had the urge to use the restroom, i would have rode it. This just sucks alot, back then i thought JFK OG’s would never succumb to this mass retirement and now they are.. 😢 Never gonna be easy being in Manhattan ans Queens and not seeing a Single OG Anymore

Alright, three things: 1, At 13:39, that's just great, now we lost another 5 car set, and I wonder how. I'm worry that when the R262s come, they would replace a few of these, not just the R62s and R62As, since they're ordering extras R262s for fleet expansion. 2, It sucks that New Flyer will be the most dominant fleet for the MTA in the near future since the Novabus market is leaving the US market. The Novabus LFS is my favorite bus model in the MTA (it reminds me of the RTS). And we lost hope again when Proterra filed for bankruptcy not long after. New Flyer is good too, I like them, but it's going to bland almost everything, especially if they go through with ordering 1600+ New Flyer buses (both 40 ft and 60 ft) for the next five years. Now we're going to have New Flyers replacing older New Flyers, yeah, each model will have different specs, electric, diesel, hybrid, CNG, hydrogen, etc. 3, I want to know if there are more M9s that are still being delivered. I can't even find how many M9s are delivered so far on LIRR property and how many that are not delivered yet.

For your second point, think about it. With all the Xcelsiors we have now, plus those that are coming down the line, we were both to have Xcelsiors replace Xcelsiors eventually. The same thing almost happened with the LFS's too, but they didn't make it long enough for the cut.

Yes. The order got canceled in favor for more Zero-Emissions buses. Of which was diverted to become the Option Order II New Flyer XE40 CHARGE NG's (750 buses). This would effectively retire the remaining 2011-2013 New Flyer C40LF's, and part of the 2014-2015 New Flyer XD40's and 2015-2016 Nova LFS'. As what was the planned 155 CNG's, 210 Hybrid's, and 348 Diesel bus orders was intended to retire. The concurrent LFS and XD40's is the last order of 40-foot Diesel's the MTA would be getting brand-new.

The likely reason the OGs lasted longer than the Orion Vs is because the Orion Vs suffered from frame rot. IIRC TA didnt want to get rid of them as fast as they did, but their hands were forced.

@@AviTheWolf I seem to recall that some of the 1998-99 Orion 5.501s were flood damaged by Sandy, hence speeding up their retirement. It was also supposedly the reason why Grand Avenue Depot got some Orion Vs back in summer 2013.
